One Sunday last year, eight f us hiked fr a cuple f hurs thrugh the desert near San Dieg t reach Thunder Canyn Cave. We had t abseil(沿繩滑下)thrugh an icy waterfall t get inside, s we put n ur wetsuits and lwered urselves 30 feet dwn. By 11:00 a.m. we were inside. After we climbed further, we reached a nine-inch crack. Having mved fr fur hurs, I was tired and wet.
The grup leader, Luca, was guiding three cavers. One f them, Steve gt stuck in the crack. There was 10 minutes f pulling and pushing until Steve was free. He was tired and needed t leave. Luca, assuming I’d been thrugh the crack befre, guided Steve thrugh the cave fr anther 15 minutes t an exit. I was secnd frm last t g thrugh. I didn’t realize that Luca wasn’t there — if I’d knwn, I wuldn’t have attempted the crack, as I needed an experienced guide.
The challenge is t put yur feet first dwn the length f the crack, and then mve yur bdy sideways t swing alng, befre drpping five feet t the flr f the next space. On my first attempt, I knew I wuldn’t make it thrugh, but the grup encuraged me t try again. I didn’t want t incnvenience anyne by having t make the lng trip back thrugh the cave, s I backed ut and tk ff my wetsuit. In just my T-shirt, I tried t slide thrugh again but my hips(屁股)were trapped. My feet were hanging n the ther side and my left arm supprted my bdy. My hand rested n a wden bard that had been left cvering bulders(大圓石) t prtect cavers frm slipping. Luca returned and the team tried everything t shift me as I mentally fcused n escape.
After tw hurs my arm weakened, s I slid further int the crack, where the gap was nly 8.5 inches wide. My bdy weight was n my left hand, my back and chest tuching the cld stne walls. The guy behind me, Jim, tried unsuccessfully t pull me back. Of curse, I was blcking his escape, t.
