My family lived in Triumph, Idaho, the USA, an old mining town with a population of 33. All of the kids at my age were boys. People of all ages always looked out for me, but they also brought me some embarrassment.
I was born at home. The doctor overseeing my arrival was a family friend. Dad had then been a soldier serving in the navy and figured we should save some money.
At first, my parents didn’t have a name for me. My name on my birth certificate still read Baby Girl. And that’s what they called me until I was almost 4. When they planned our first train trip to Mexico for vacation, we needed passports which made it easier to come up with a name. My father liked the sound of Picabo, an old Native American settlement in the south. My mother and father agreed on Picabo.
As a child, I was afraid of the dark, but it was manageable. Another fear was the Rhode Island Red. Each time I went out to the hen house to get eggs, he always pecked (啄) me as if I had stolen the eggs laid by his lover. I began carrying a stick to keep him away. However, he was always following me. Later we became good friends. I also liked playing hide-and-seek with him.
Our house was one of four that stood next to each other on an upper street in town. It was a one-story white cottage with no basement and no foundation, but Dad dug cellar (地窖). All of our heat came from a wood-burning stove, where our food was cooked over an open flame. Both of my parents were great cooks.
24. Why did people in the town take care of the author?
A. she was the only girl of the same age. B. She was the daughter of a miner.
C. Her father was a doctor’s friend. D. Her parents were living in the town.
25. Why did the parents decide to name the author?
A. To have the sound of Picabo. B. To go on foreign trip.
C. To make an agreement with each other. D. To realize the author’s wish.
26. What do we know about the Rhode Island Red?
A. He always stole the eggs. B. He loved following the author’s parents.
C. He was a rooster friend of the author’s. D. He played hide-and-seek with his lover.
27. What might the author think of her childhood life?
A. Boring. B. Inspiring. C. Embarrassing. D. Pleasing.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夾). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互記憶)”
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
28. The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude
C. describe how to use the Internet D. explain how to store information
29. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
30. In transactive memory, people ________.
A. keep the information in mind
B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer
D. remember how to find the information
31. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.

A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she suffered severely by self-criticism.
This student, like many I teach, strongly believes she should be able to control the outcomes of her life by virtue of her hard work. In her mind, “Nothing can stop me but myself”. So when these students fall short of what they imagine they should accomplish, they are filled with self-blame, reasoning, “If my accomplishments are mine to control, my failures must be entirely my faults, too”, which makes it extremely difficult for them to move on.
We often owe young adults struggling with failure to their parents’ overprotection of them from discomfort. But there is another factor at play: a message shown by indulging (縱容的) parents who have falsely promised them that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it. However, the cruel reality of life is that you can do everything in your power — and still fail. Then what should be done to help?
Psychologists Luthar and Kumar urge parents and teachers to spend time helping students find purpose, or goals they really love to pursue and that make an impact on the world, which may help them gain greater life satisfaction and become more psychologically mature(成熟). Besides, instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we might all question a culture where one is considered lazy without full devotion. The point is to remind them that life has a way of sucker-punching (出其不意) us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
32. What does the underlined phrase “by virtue of” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. in addition to B. in spite of C. by means of D. for fear of
33. The author believes that young adults find it hard to struggle with failure because __________.
A. they are not taught how to deal with difficulties
B. they are short of the ability to handle failure
C. they are under the protection of their parents
D. they are misled by their parents’ false message
34. What did psychologists Luthar and Kumar urge parents and teachers to do?
A. To teach students how to avoid faults.
B. To lead students to set their truly loved goals.
C. To help students to discover a path to success.
D. To allow kids to blame themselves.
35. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Students don’t care about failure at all.
B. Students are sure to succeed if they try their best.
C. Students should bear all the failures on their own.
D. Students with positive attitudes can move on more easily.
第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Live Every Day Like It’s A Holiday
We feel great on holiday because we let go of everyday stresses and strains. 36 So whether or not you’re going away this summer, there’s plenty you can do to make sure you benefit from that holiday feeling.
Sleep like a holidaymaker
Sleep like a baby when you are on your holidays but stay awake when you’re in your usual routine? 37 To reset your sleep pattern, avoid bringing problems to bed. That includes your phone, TV or laptop. Make sure the room is dark and cool. Aim for at least seven hours’ ZZZs—just as you would on holiday.
Get moving
38 Given that exercise is cheap, healthy and reduces stress, it makes absolute sense to build it into your day. A walk will release happy hormones, and eases anxiety and mild depression.
39
Part of the joy of going away is lingering over delicious food with families. Take up the holiday habit of sitting down as a family for at least one meal a day. Families who eat together experience less anxiety, less depression and less obesity, research has found.
Be a tourist in your own city
Part of the thrill of a holiday is discovering a new place and doing new things. ___40___ At weekends, check out a new music venue, visit a different museum or have a drink in that interesting-looking pub you’re always walking past. It will get you out of routine and make you feel alive. A bit like a holiday, really.
A. Make your meals a celebration.
B. Carve out some dedicated quiet time.
C. If so, you might need to examine your sleep habits.
D. Just make sure you schedule it into your day or week.
E. But it’s also easy to be a holidaymaker in the place you live.
F. Research has even shown that vacations help health and well-being.
G. When you’re travelling, you walk around new cities without a second thought.
