5W—what,who,when,where,why。
2.一般排除絕對(duì)項(xiàng)(must,always,never, all, only, have to, none, completely)
常選語氣可能性不大的答案(may,might,could ,be likely to,possible,not necessarily)

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ “Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
24. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
25. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage?
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
26. What does Titterton need to practise?
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
27. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worse page turner”?
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.
A 25. C 26. B 27. D

Passage 2(2021?
I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
24. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
25. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
26. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?
A. Boring. B. Tiring. C. Costly. D. Risky.
27. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.
C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.
A 25. A 2 6. B 2 7. B

A letter written to a 12-year-old girl in Lithuania was delivered in December, almost 51 years after it was sent by a pen pal in Poland. “I thought that someone was pranking me,” said Genovefa Klonovska after being handed the letter, which included a handmade colored rose and two paper dolls.
The letter, together with 17 others, fell out of a ventilation hole (通風(fēng)口) this summer, dirty and wrinkled, as a wall was taken down in a former post office on the suburb of Vilnius. Jurgis Vilnius, owner of the building immediately called the post office. “I’m so happy they got interested,” said he.
Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, and post office workers spent months looking for the right houses and talking to current renters and neighbors, tracking down where the recipients moved to. Only five were found. In several cases children of late recipients were handed a lost letter.
“We felt a moral duty to do this,” said Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of the customer experience department at Lithuania Post.
One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea. People were emotional. “Some felt they saw a part of daily life of their deceased parents,” Zebrauskaite said.
In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koezary in Poland and stamped in 1970, a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village, so she has to walk in minus 23 degree Celsius cold, and asks for pictures of actors.
Now in her 60s, Klonovska has no memory of Ewa. She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address advertising for pen pals in a newspaper, and the relationship ceased after the letter got undelivered.
“So good that the letter didn't matter much. The loss was not life-changing,” said Klonovska “What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor (求婚者) to his love, and their wedding never happened?”
4. What does the underlined word “pranking” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Brightening. B. Embarrassing. C. Tricking. D. Pleasing.

You are quite talented, but your attitude is terrible, " the coach said.(教練說,你很有天賦。 She kept thinking about what the coach had said.(Ellie無法入睡,她反復(fù)思考教練說的話)”可知,Ellie睡不著,是因?yàn)樗谙虢叹殲槭裁催@么說。故選D。
接下來“Ellie couldn't stay away from the gym, so she practiced alone.(Ellie不能遠(yuǎn)離體育館,于是她獨(dú)自訓(xùn)練)”在訓(xùn)練中“after watching Ann fall off the parallel bars(雙杠)again and again, Ellie ran to her and explained to Ann what she was doing wrong.(看見Ann從雙杠上掉下來,Ellie跑過去給她解釋出錯(cuò)的原因)”由此可以看出,Ellie逐漸學(xué)會(huì)了幫助他人。

Passage 4
Cal Fire captain Shawn Raley barked evacuation (疏散) orders over the radio for the neighborhood of Sunset Terrace. The sky was red and the wind screamed. New fires lit in bushes and on roofs. A 24-year veteran of wildland fires, Raley had seen nearly everything, including swirling eddies of air called fire whirls. But he hadn’t seen anything like this.
At around 7:15 p. m., he drove toward areas in the wooded hills. He figured that residents would need help escaping. His headlights barely pierced the smoke, but he could see three bulldozers (推土機(jī)) inch past him on two-lane Buenaventura Boulevard. Don Andrews drove one; Terry Cummings and Jimmie Jones drove the other two. They were under swaying electrical line, and Raley shouted at them to move away.
In the driveway of a house, Raley spotted a Tesla with someone in the driver’s seat. Dr. Thiruvoipati Nanda Kumar had raced eight kilometres home from Vibra Hospital. His wife, Yasoda, and daughter, Sushma, hadn’t received an evacuation alert, and when the power cut out, their garage door wouldn’t open, locking their car inside.
“Go back!” Raley shouted at Kumar, sounding his siren.
“My wife and daughter are there. Can they come in?” Kumar said, pointing to Raley’s vehicle. He figured they’d be safest with the captain.
“Come in my truck?” Raley asked. “Yes.”
The women jumped into the back seat, coughing. Nearby, flames that climbed 30 metres burned their neighbours’ homes. Soon theirs would fall, as well.
“I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”
Debris (碎片) attacked the truck, cracking Raley’s windshield and breaking the other windows as the wind blew the vehicle off the road. The captain threw himself across the passenger seat, protecting his face as the fire passed over them. Yasoda and Sushma screamed.
“Are you okay?” Raley shouted, though he knew the answer. He was embarrassed. He’d told this trapped family that he would get them out safely. Now they were covered in glass and bleeding. Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.
4. What can we learn about Raley?
A. He hadn’t seen fire whirls in his career as a veteran of wildland fires.
B. He was quite experienced when it came to dealing with wildland fires.
C. He was so angry that he shouted at Don to move away from the road.
D. He saved the Kumar’s family out of the fire in his truck on seeing them.
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The smoke was so heavy that Raley could hardly see the road.
B. The doctor’s house was burnt down to the ground when Raley arrived.
C. There were three persons driving bulldozers quickly on the two-lane road.
D. Dr. Kumar with his wife was trapped in the car when the power cut off.
6. Why was Raley embarrassed in the last paragraph?
A. Because he was injured by the fire.
B. Because his truck was blown off the road.
C. Because he might fail to save the family out.
D. Because he found Kumar’s Tesla was on fire.
7. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. A Big Wildland Blaze
B. A Lucky Family
C. Come in My Truck
D. I’ll Lead You Out
根據(jù)第一段中“A 24-year veteran of wildland fires, Raley had seen nearly everything, including swirling eddies (旋渦) of air called fire whirls.(作為一名對(duì)野地火災(zāi)有著24年經(jīng)驗(yàn)的人,Raley見過幾乎所有的情況,包括被稱為火旋轉(zhuǎn)的漩渦空氣。)”
根據(jù)第二段中“His headlights barely pierced the smoke.(他的頭燈幾乎不能穿透煙霧)”可知,大火造成的煙霧很大,Raley幾乎看不見路;根據(jù)“he could see three bulldozers (推土機(jī)) inch past him ”可知,那三輛推土機(jī)行駛緩慢;根據(jù)文中“The women jumped into the back seat, coughing. ”可知,Kumar的妻子、女兒后來上了Raley的車,沒有被困在自己的車?yán)?;根?jù)文中“Nearby, flames that climbed 30 metres burned their neighbours’ homes. Soon theirs would fall, as well.(附近,高達(dá)30米的大火燒毀了鄰居的房屋。很快,他們的房子也會(huì)倒下。)”可知, 當(dāng)Raley到達(dá)時(shí),Kumar的房子還沒有被燒毀。比較四個(gè)選項(xiàng),只有A項(xiàng)是正確的。
6. C推理判斷題。根據(jù)文章最后一段中“He’d told this trapped family that he would get them out safely. Now they were covered in glass and bleeding. Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.”
文章中提到“I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”?!癐’ll Lead You Out”是作為消防隊(duì)長的Raley對(duì)Kumar的承諾,可以作為文章的標(biāo)題。

Passage 1
Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he’s housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.
For decades, Bryant, 61, worked with teens aging out of New York’s child welfare system. His job was to find services that would make the transition (過渡) to living on their own easier. But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New York City Administration for Children’s Services office wasn’t enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.
In an interview last month, Bryant told Romario Vassell, 21, one of his foster children, that agreeing to care for him was definitely one of the best decisions he made in foster care. Bryant told Vassell that he was nervous when he took in his first foster child. He said, “I lived alone at that point, and he was a kid that nobody wanted to take because of his behaviors. He got in a fight and he appeared at my house.” Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.
Bryant had been Vassell’s assigned case worker when they met. Bryart suggested that Vassell, then an untidy 18-year-old, consider foster care as an option to get out of the home lead shelter where he was staying.
At first, Vassell was hesitant. “I didn’t know how foster care was.” he said.
Since living with Bryant, Vassell now feels like he has a support network. “If I feel down and like I’m cornered, I have someone I can reach out to and talk to.” he said. “And that’s what I really love.”
Bryant told Vassell, “Whatever you’ve learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that’s what’s important to me.”

D. To comment on Bryant’s life.
D 5. C 6. D 7. B

Passage 2
A group of 10 students at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, recently invented a device, WheeStroll, that enables people in wheelchairs to push a baby stroller(嬰兒車). The teens were inspired to create it when Chelsie King, a teacher at their school, went to their teacher, Matt, to ask for help.
Chelsie’s husband, Jeremy King, had brain surgery to remove a tumor(腫瘤) three years ago, which left him with physical challenges. While he can walk, he is unsteady and usually gets around in a wheelchair for safety’s sake. The two of them were expecting their son Phoenix to be born in March. As they struggled to find adaptive ways for Jeremy to care for a baby, they realized there was no way for him to take their baby for a walk outside in a stroller.
Chelsie went to Matt for help. Matt leads a high school class called “Making for Social Good”. Matt thought Chelsie’s idea to make Jeremy an adaptive wheelchair attachment was the perfect project for his students, so they got to work!
The students talked to somebody at the local fire department who actually does baby car seat installation(安裝) training to try to better understand how those things work. They held a video conference with Jeremy and Chelsie to discuss his needs and wants, and then they each came up with an idea and created a 3D model for it. Together, they narrowed everything down to the best two designs. The teens put their designs through rigorous testing before they were ready for Jeremy to try one out.
“It was certainly emotional seeing the process and everything that went into this,” Jeremy said. “I really feel the students took all my concerns to heart when creating the prototypes(原型),” Chelsie added.
The WheeStroll was completed around the same time Chelsie gave birth. Just a few weeks later, she and Jeremy were able to take Phoenix out for a walk around their neighborhood for the very first time!
4. Who was the students’ invention intended to help?
A. Matt. B. Chelsie. C. Jeremy. D. Phoenix.
5. What is WheeStroll?
A. A stroller. B. A wheelchair.
C. A stroller handle. D. A wheelchair attachment.
6. Why did the students talk to someone at the fire department?
A. To test a baby car seat they had made.
B. To create a 3D model of their invention.
C To get an idea of how their invention would work.
D. To narrow down their choices to the best two designs.
7. What can be inferred about the Kings?
A. They were teachers of the Bullis School.
B. They were moved by the students’ efforts.
C. They were emotional about the birth of their baby.
D. They came up with the idea of a special wheelchair.
C 5. D 6. C 7. B

Passage 3
During my years teaching communication courses at East Carolina University and College of Charleston, I got to hear many incredible true-life stories through students' presentations. Stories that stick out in my mind include a young man's sharing his experience of being falsely diagnosed with a fatal illness, another who failed repeatedly to try out for the baseball team before getting into a game he enjoys much more - golf, and so on. So many unforgettable stories; so much wisdom.
But one story really stands out in my mind to illustrate our incredible power. Here's what happened to this young girl, Suzy.
One Christmas Suzy had her heart set on getting a new Barbie. But not just any Barbie, it was one where she could cut her hair. At least the doll came with scissors. It was the last gift that little seven-year-old Suzy opened, and she felt pure delight. Barbie's hair went from hip length, to waist length, to long layers to irregular, to shoulder length, to pixie (小精靈) short... finally ending with a total buzz cut (圓寸).
Everything's ready and the logical thing to do next was of course for Suzy to cut her own hair. She cut layers and more layers and couldn't wait to show her parents and class.
Little Suzy had a hard time understanding why her mother wanted to take her to a beauty salon to “fix” her hair style. But Suzy firmly believed everyone at school would be so envious of her design concept and skill. Her friends would turn green with envy. Absolutely, her complete and unquestioned confidence in her appearance caused other people to see her beauty.
That story was told 12 years after the fact and Suzy still has pictures of that haircut. She would never cut her hair again, but she cherishes that memory of boundless self-value.
Confidence is like a muscle that you exercise. You decide to be more confident, to choose the positive performance, to take care of yourself, and the feeling of confidence comes to you after that. We all have had that level of confidence at times, but where is it when you need it?
4. What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the author's background.
B. To tell some incredible stories.
C. To summarize the main idea of the article.
D. To pave the way for the following.
5. The reason why Suzy wants the Barbie is that
A. she will make a comparison
B. she would like to practice hair cutting
C. she feel like showing off her collection
D. she wants to give her classmates a surprise
6. Which of the following words best describes Suzy?
A. Determined. B. Absurd. C. Sympathetic. D. Aggressive.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Lifelong Wisdom
B. Confident Scissors
C. Unforgettable Stories
D. Barbie's Encouragement

Passage 4
In the early nineteenth century in Britain, many improvements were made in medicine. Illnesses that had been deadly a few years before were now curable. However, Surgeons had one problem. They had restricted
access to dead bodies to dissect( 解 剖 ),which was the only way that they could learn about the flesh and bones inside the body and the only way to teach new surgeons to carry out operations.
The job of finding these dead bodies was carried out by an unpleasant group of people called “body snatchers”. They went into graveyards at night and dug up any recently buried bodies. Then they took the bodies to the medical schools and sold them. A body could be sold for between£5 and 10, which was a lot of money at that time.
The most famous of these body snatchers was a man from Edinburgh called William Burke. He was different because he did not just dig up bodies from graveyards. He got greedy and thought of an easier way to find bodies. Instead of digging them up, he killed the poorer guests in his small hotel. Dr. Knox, the respected surgeon he worked for, never asked why all the bodies he brought him had been strangled(勒死).
Burke was eventually arrested and put on trial in 1829. The judge showed no mercy to him and his
punishment was to be hanged. Appropriately, his body was given to the medical school and he ended up on the dissecting table, just like his victims.
Now, over 180 years later, surgeons do not need the help of criminals to learn their skills. However, the science of surgery could not have developed without their rather gruesome help.
24.What problem did the British surgeons in the early 19th century face?
A.Some illnesses remained incurable.
B.Dead bodies were not easily available.
C. They had only one way to carry out operations.
D. They had difficulty learning about the flesh and bones.
25.Which can be the best heading for Paragraph 3?
A.Burke’s easier way.
B.Body snatchers’ job.
C.Poor guests in Burke’s hotel.
D.Deals between Burke and Dr. Knox.
26.Which can best illustrate Burke’s story?
A.Justice has long arms.
B.More haste, less speed.
C.Do as you would be done by.
D.Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
27.What does the underlined word in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Incredibly fascinating. B. Surprisingly influential.
C. Extremely understandable. D. Unpleasantly shocking.

Passage 5
The captain of the ship, the Beagle, wanted someone who would “profit by the opportunity of visiting distant countries yet little known”. The person who answered the call was not the captain’s first choice. It was a young man who had left medical school without completing his degree. What’s more, he had recently received a letter from his father predicting that he would be “a disgrace to yourself and all your family”. Despite all this, his adventures on this ship would lead to one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time.
The young man in question, Charles Darwin, was a geologist and naturalist, fascinated by rocks, plants and animals. The journey gave him the chance to study various living things in their natural environments. After Darwin had spent some time in South America, his room on the ship was crowded with samples of the plants and animals he had collected. As he studied these, he asked himself the question: how did different species come to exist?
At that time, people believed that all species had appeared on Earth at the same time, and had not changed since. But Darwin began to think differently. He noticed that some species of animals were very similar to each other. Maybe animals evolved as they adapted to their changing environments. It was just an idea, but enough to inspire Darwin to look for more evidence.
When the Beagle reached the Galapagos Islands in 1835, Darwin saw a variety of new species, but it was the birds that interested him the most. Darwin noticed that there was a difference between the finches(雀科小鳥) on each of the islands. It seemed their beaks(鳥喙) had evolved according to what food was available on that particular island.
Darwin suspected the finches had evolved from a common ancestor, which had arrived on the islands a long time before. Over time, it had slowly evolved into many new species. And that was the answer to how new species of plants and animals came to exist: they evolved from earlier ancestors.
It was a completely new idea—a theory of evolution. Darwin explained this theory in his book, On the Origin of Species. Many people refused to believe that living things, including humans, had evolved from lower forms of life. But Darwin’s scientific studies were so convincing that more and more people started to believe his theory.
Today, On the Origin of Species has changed ideas about life on Earth forever. And it all began with the journey on the Beagle.
28.Why did the captain of the Beagle choose Darwin to sail together?
A.Because he appreciated Darwin’s talent and wanted to offer some help.
B.Because he had recently received a letter asking for help from Darwin’s father.
C.Because he hoped this valuable expedition would also benefit someone who needed it.
D.Because he thought Darwin’s adventures might lead to an important scientific discovery.
29.Which of the following is the correct order to describe Darwin’s exploration?
①Darwin suspected that the finches had evolved from a common ancestor.
②Darwin proposed a theory that living things had evolved from lower forms of life.
③Darwin wanted to know how different species came to exist.
④Darwin noticed there was a difference between the finches on the Galapagos Islands.
⑤Darwin studied various living things in their natural environments.
A.⑤③④①② B.⑤④①③② C.③④①⑤② D.③⑤②④①
30.What was people’s original attitude towards Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species?
A.Supportive. B.Critical. C.Neutral. D.Suspicious.
31.Which of the following would be the main idea of this text?
A.Darwin’s interest in various living things made him a great naturalist.
B.Darwin’s journey on the Beagle inspired his Theory of Evolution.
C.Darwin went on a journey to confirm his scientific discovery.
D.Darwin’s discovery has changed ideas about life on Earth.
