Passage A   People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.   Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均勻的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.    "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth."     According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.      The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.      It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less."      In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.1. The discovery shows that Westerners         .    A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth    B. consider facial expressions universally reliable    C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways    D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions                                                      2. What were the people asked to do in the study?A. To make a face at each other.              B. To get their faces impressive.C. To classify some face pictures.            D. To observe the researchers' faces.                 3. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 6 refer to?A. The participants in the study.B. The researchers of the study.C. The errors made during the study. D. The data collected from the study.                                                                                4. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to         .A. do translation more successfullyB. study the mouth more frequentlyC. examine the eyes more attentivelyD. read facial expressions more correctly 答案:A解析:根據(jù)第三段 “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.” 答案:C解析:根據(jù)第五段 “…by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral.” 答案:A解析:根據(jù)定語從句 “that they show”所修飾的 eye movements 在研究中為the participants 所作(從the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people”可知)可判斷選A4. 答案:C解析:根據(jù)第六段 “It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners.” CPassage B Unlike many other people, who have birthmarks on their bodies, I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks. My birthmarks are caused by an genetic condition from my moms side of the family. This syndrome causes polyps (息肉), which are small non-cancerous growths in the intestinal tract (腸道). Every other year I have a procedure where the doctor removes them from my intestines. On the day before, I cant eat anything solid because the doctors need my intestines to be clear so that they dont mistake food for a polyp. I also cannot drink anything red, because they may mistake it for blood on the scan. Before the procedure they give me anesthesia (麻醉).No matter how many times I go through the process. I always get nervous but thats understandable. At the end of the day I always know Ill end up okay.My younger cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. Her birthmark is pretty noticeable and looks like faded red splotches of paint. Shes never tried to hide her birthmark or change her appearance. It really inspires me. She has always been so much more confident about her birthmark than I am. Once, her grandmother told her mom that her birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my younger cousins mom had actually taken that suggestion, my younger cousin wouldnt be as confident about her birthmark as she is.I could have covered up my birthmarks a while ago by wearing black lipstick. But Im glad I didnt. Using black lipstick would be straying away from accepting facial features that make me different. I am finally accepting who I am and now I wont tolerate people making fun of me. I dont hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, Theyre beauty marks.1.What do we know about the author from the first two paragraphs?AShe likes to be different from others.BHer birthmarks can be deadly.CShe should eat some solid food before the operation.DHer birthmarks cause her some trouble.2. What does the underlined word prominentin paragraph 3 mean?AApparent.            BBrilliant.             CHarmful.             DImpressive.3. What can be inferred about the authors cousin?AShe has hidden her birthmark.BHer confidence encourages the author.CShe has taken her grandmas suggestion.DShe never judges others by their looks.4. What can we learn from the story?AEvery coin has two sides.BDont judge a person by his appearance.CLearn to accept who you are.DOvercome the nervousness. 根據(jù)第二段前三句“My birthmarks are caused by an genetic condition from my mom’s side of the family. This syndrome causes polyps (息肉), which are small non-cancerous growths in the intestinal tract (腸道). Every other year I have a procedure where the doctor removes them from my intestines.” 根據(jù)劃線詞所在句的后半部分“suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often(建議她多穿長(zhǎng)袖衣服)”可推知,表姐的奶奶之所以讓表姐多穿長(zhǎng)袖衣服,是為了擋住胎記,因?yàn)樘ビ浱黠@了,由此可知?jiǎng)澗€詞prominent表示明顯的,與“Apparent”同義。故選A。3. 根據(jù)第四段第四和第五句“She’s never tried to hide her birthmark or change her appearance. It really inspires me.” 結(jié)合最后一段第三句“I am finally accepting who I am and now I won’t tolerate people making fun of me.” C。Passage C When you hear the phrase cultural heritage, what comes to mind? Maybe you remember going to see folk dances with people wearing traditional costumes. Perhaps you were exposed to the music and arts of this culture. ____1____. It might begin with the memory of your mother’s cooking, or visiting grandma’s house and receiving a special treat as a reward for good behavior. As you close your eyes, can you picture your favorite dish? Is it a salad with a special dressing, or a delicious dessert?  ____2____ Maybe you’re far away from home and eating your favorite soul food makes you feel closer to those you’re separated from. Many of us have missed spending a holiday or two with our loved ones, only to find ourselves calling to ask what they had for dinner. It doesn’t matter if it’s the same thing that is served year after year. ____3____. These recipes, cherished family favorites, handed down from each generation to the next might experience subtle changes, but there still remains a sense of unity. It is this unity that constructs the bridge between families and generations. ____4____Good food knows no boundaries. It makes a great bond between young and old. Here, in the kitchen the old master works hand in hand with younger family members and friends, passing on traditional skills used in the cooking arts. However, more is taking place than a mere transfer of information about ingredients and mixing instructions. ____5____ It becomes an opportunity for a parent to teach family values while passing the sugar and beating the eggs. Confidences can be exchanged along with the natural flow of conversation.A. Nor does it matter whether it has changed a lot.B. A magic moment is created between children and elder.C. Food makes up our fondest memories of our childhood.D. Can you smell the aroma flowing through the house?E. There’s nothing like food to help us identify with our roots.F. Most likely, however, what comes to mind will be the food.G. Food can be described as the building blocks of this cultural bridge. 1【答案】F根據(jù)上文“When you hear the phrase cultural heritage, what comes to mind? Maybe you remember going to see folk dances with people wearing traditional costumes. Perhaps you were exposed to the music and arts of this culture.(當(dāng)你聽到文化遺產(chǎn)這個(gè)詞,你會(huì)想到什么?也許你還記得去看人們穿著傳統(tǒng)服裝跳舞;也許你接觸過這種文化的音樂和藝術(shù))”以及后文“It might begin with the memory of your mother’s cooking, or visiting grandma’s house and receiving a special treat as a reward for good behavior. As you close your eyes, can you picture your favorite dish? Is it a salad with a special dressing, or a delicious dessert?( 它可能開始于你母親烹飪的記憶,或拜訪祖母的家,并得到一個(gè)特殊的款待作為良好表現(xiàn)的獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)。 2【答案】D根據(jù)上文“As you close your eyes, can you picture your favorite dish? Is it a salad with a special dressing, or a delicious dessert?(當(dāng)你閉上眼睛,你能想象出你最喜歡的菜嗎? 以及后文“Maybe you’re far away from home and eating your favorite soul food makes you feel closer to those you’re separated from.(也許你遠(yuǎn)離家鄉(xiāng),吃你最喜歡的靈魂食物讓你感覺更接近那些與你分離的人)”可知,本句為上文形成并列,同為設(shè)問句設(shè)定想到食物的場(chǎng)景。 3【答案】E根據(jù)上文“Many of us have missed spending a holiday or two with our loved ones, only to find ourselves calling to ask what they had for dinner. It doesn’t matter if it’s the same thing that is served year after year.(我們很多人都錯(cuò)過了與親人共度一兩個(gè)假期的機(jī)會(huì),結(jié)果卻發(fā)現(xiàn)自己打電話問他們晚餐吃了什么。年復(fù)一年提供的是同樣的東西并不重要)”以及后文“These recipes, cherished family favorites, handed down from each generation to the next might experience subtle changes, but there still remains a sense of unity. It is this unity that constructs the bridge between families and generations.(這些祖祖輩輩傳下來的食譜可能會(huì)有細(xì)微的變化,但仍然有一種團(tuán)結(jié)的感覺。 4【答案】G根據(jù)上文“These recipes, cherished family favorites, handed down from each generation to the next might experience subtle changes, but there still remains a sense of unity. It is this unity that constructs the bridge between families and generations.(這些祖祖輩輩傳下來的食譜可能會(huì)有細(xì)微的變化,但仍然有一種團(tuán)結(jié)的感覺。 5【答案】B根據(jù)上文“Good food knows no boundaries. It makes a great bond between young and old. Here, in the kitchen the old master works hand in hand with younger family members and friends, passing on traditional skills used in the cooking arts. However, more is taking place than a mere transfer of information about ingredients and mixing instructions.(好的食物是沒有界限的。 然而,發(fā)生的不僅僅是關(guān)于配料和攪拌說明的信息的傳遞)”可知,上文提到了食物是年輕人和老年人之間的紐帶,B選項(xiàng)中between children and elder對(duì)應(yīng)上文中between young and old。
