Specifically, with people who are lucid (清醒的) dreaming, that is, dreaming while being aware you are dreaming. In separate experiments about lucid dreaming, scientists in the U.S., France, Germany and the Netherlands asked people simple questions while they slept. Sleepers would respond by moving their eyes or faces in a certain way to indicate their answers.“Since the1980s, we’ve known that lucid dreamers can communicate out of dreams by using these signals,” says Karen Konkoly, the first author on the study published this month in Current Biology. “But we were wondering, can we also communicate in? Can we ask people questions that they could actually hear in their dreams so that we could kind of have a more meaningful conversation?”Lucid dreaming is not common. So to study it, they found people who had experience with it and also trained people to try to make lucid dreaming more likely. Before they went to sleep, the participants were also trained on how to communicate their answers. For example, a typical question would be to ask what is 8 minus 6. A 19-year-old American man was able to respond by moving his eyes left-right, left-right-two times-to signal “2”.Out of the 158 trials among 36 participants, about 18% of the time they were able to give correct answers. In another 18%, it wasn’t clear if participants were responding or not. They were wrong 3% of the time. Most often, 61%, participants didn’t respond at all.The researchers write that their findings present “new opportunities for gaining real-time information about dreaming” and “could begin a new era of investigations into multiple dimensions of sleep”. 24. What can lucid dreamers do while dreaming?A. Explain simple ideas.            B. Move around freely.C. Respond with eye movements.     D. Start a conversation.25. What is the main purpose of Konkoly’s experiment?A. To develop dream therapies.     B. To look deep into lucid dreaming.C. To popularize lucid dreaming.     D. To cure patients with sleep problems.26. What can be learnt from the experimental data in Paragraph 5?A. The result was a total disappointment.B. 61% of the participants never answered.C. 18% of the participants gave right answers.D. Chances are the participants can give accurate answers.27. Which word best describes the researchers’ attitude to their findings?A. Optimistic.      B. Doubtful.      C. Critical.      D. Unclear.CAt Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals (筆友) exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand—an activity that is becoming less and less common.Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates the scheme at Jenner Park, says: “All of our writing is for a purpose. That’s the key in getting children to value handwriting.” As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to read it—whether that’s parents or another group of children—there’s always the real sense of pride to go along with it,” says Johnson. The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they’ve reached a certain standard. Johnson says that developing students’ writing in this way matters for their life after school: “For us, it’s important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life skills that can make them successful.” The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place. “Obviously we’re competing with technology continuously.” she says. “And I know there are people there saying you don’t need to bother about handwriting because tech is out there. But we don’t see it as competing. We’re trying to get pupils to realize that there’s a place for handwriting and to know when it’s important to use each.”28. Why does the school launch the initiative?A. To help children find the meaning of handwriting.B. To urge children to acknowledge the audience.C. To encourage children to show pity for the aged.D. To persuade children to choose proper courses.29. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the school?A. Its after-class activities.            B. Its practice in handwriting.C. Its academic achievements. D. Its innovation in technology.30. What can we infer from the last paragraph about handwriting?A. It will win against technology.     B. It will co-exist with technology.C. It will give way to technology.     D. It will cause confusion to people.31. What can we learn from the text?A. Handwriting promotes the pen pal scheme.B. Writing letters by hand reduces misunderstanding.C. Creative ideas for dealing with challenges gain popularity.D. Putting pen to paper contributes to a love of the written word.DPeople must carefully pay attention to everything they put in their mouths in order to control their weight. By contrast, others can eat French fries to their hearts’ content and achieve the same result. How do some people manage never to gain weight?Perception, one of the most important factors, has nothing to do with the body type because our personal feeling is always wrong. We often feel that some people who eat more don’t put on weight. Actually? Those who appear to eat whatever they like without gaining weight aren’t eating more than the rest of us,” said Professor Kathleen Melanson. “For example, your friend who eats ice cream on a daily basis might eat less at another meal or snack less throughout the rest of the day.”“Physical activity can also make a difference, but it doesn’t have to be a gym workout. There’s little evidence to suggest that—without exercise, some people were born to burn significantly more calories than others,” said Dr. Ines Barroso, a researcher at the University of Cambridge. But there may be physical differences that allow some people to naturally control the number of calories they consume without exercising much self-regulation. A lot of nervous system signals and hormones that circulate in our blood interact to tell us when we’re hungry or full. This is called the appetite regulatory system, and it may be more sensitive in some people than others, Melanson said. One important hormone involved in this system is leptin. It helps regulate how much food we want to eat over longer periods of time, not just for our next meal. So a person with a more sensitive system might go back for seconds and thirds at a party, but then feel full for the next few days and eat less. Genetics can also play a role in a person’s tendency to gain or lose weight. Researchers have identified over 250 different regions of DNA that are associated with obesity, according to a 2019 study published in PLOS Genetics. 32. What does the underlined word “Perception” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Connection.        B. Defense.         C. Sense.        D. Reduction. 33. What do we know about leptin in Paragraph 4?A. It makes people usually feel hungry. B. It helps people have a better appetite.C. It helps people regulate their food intake. D. It makes people sensitive to the flavor of food.34. What do the findings of the 2019 study show?A. Weight problems can be avoided. B. Losing weight is equally difficult for everyone.C. Genes can be changed to avoid weight problems.D. Some people may be born to have weight problems.35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?A. To share some ideas about how to lose weight.B. To explain why some people never gain weight.C. To advise people to control their daily diet strictly. D. To call for people to pay attention to healthy eating. 第二節(jié) (共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)The Human Library has been working to encourage a sense of shared humanity for almost two decades.
