There isn't much likelihood of an uneducated, untrained man being hired to do some very different, highly professional jobs in his life. But a man named Ferdinand Waldo Demera accomplished just that. He was such a skillful actor that he wrote his own roles and played them out upon life's broad stage.
Demera realized early that the only way he could succeed in life would be by using his special powers of trickery. To convince people of his qualifications, Demera forged (偽造) signatures on impressive references. Then his confident manner and convincing acting made him a success at almost everything he tried. As a surgeon on a Royal Canadian ship during the Korean War, Demera performed 19 successful operations and he had had no medical training.
Later, acting as a college professor in applied psychology, he was well liked and admired by both students and staff. But the day came when Demera's charade (偽裝) was uncovered, so he was forced to keep a low profile for several years. Then he obtained a position as a guidance adviser in a prison. True to form, Demera turned in a very good performance and actually helped many of the prisoners.
Demera's trickery eventually became well known, and the story of this highly successful“acting”career was written. Hollywood bought the story and made it into a movie. It was said
that Demera applied for the lead in his own life's story, but ironically, he did not pass the screen test . It was the first time he failed to fool.

In 1848, nine young men were charged with betrayal of the queen of England. The punishment for this crime was death. These men had to be dealt with strongly, because they could not be allowed to set a bad example for others. Although the people sided with the young men who were accused, the judge sentenced them to be hanged.
The court case drew a great deal of public interest, and the nine men became famous. Protests against their punishment were held. After due consideration, Queen Victoria finally decided not to carry out the death sentence, but instead sentenced them to spend the rest of their lives in the penal colonies (罪犯流放地) of Australia.
This change of sentence was fortunate for everyone, because the nine men all went on to become prominent leaders. One had a brilliant career in United Stated polities, and his son became mayor (市長) of New York City . Another, Tom McGee became a member of the Canadian House of Commons. Two others become brigadier generals during the Union Amy in the Civil War. Richard Q’Gormon became governor general of Newfoundland. Tom Meagher became governor general of Australia, and Michael Ireland succeeded him in that office.
The success of all of the nine young men eventually came to the attention of Queen Victoria in a curious way. In 1871 she found herself dealing with the ninth man, the newly elected prime minister of Australia. It was Charles Duffy, a person whom she had saved from hanging. Neptune's newest and tiniest moon is probably an ancient piece of a much larger moon orbiting unusually close.
In the journal Nature California astronomers shine a light on the 21-mile-across moon Hippocamp, named after the sea horse in fairy tales.
The SETI Institute's Mark Showalter discovered Neptune's 14th moon in 2013, using Hubble Space Telescope images. Showalter and his research team theorize Hippocamp was formed from remains created billions of years ago when a come(彗星) banged into Proteus, the largest of Neptune's inner moons. The two moons orbit just 7500 miles apart and were likely even closer in the past before Proteus moved outward. Scientists have long believed Neptune's inner moons were repeatedly broken apart by collisions with comets, according to Showalter.
"The discovery of Hippocamp, orbiting so close to the much larger moon Proteus, provides a particularly dramatic explanation of the Neptune system's battered (受撞擊的) history," Showalter said in an email.
While he researches said they can not rule out the possibility that Hippocamp is unrelated
to Proteus, the moon's "tiny size and special location" support their formation theory.
Discovered by NASA' Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989, dark and irregularly shaped Proteus is Neptune's second-largest moon, measuring about 250 miles across.
Voyager 2 sent back pictures of a huge impact crater (坑洞) on Proteus. Thanks to Hubble,“now we know that a little piece of Proteus got left behind and we see it today as Hippocamp," Showalter said.
With two moons so close together, a big one like Proteus normally would knock a little one like Hippocamp right out of orbit or swallow it. Showalter said he has searched for more little moons around Neptune, using Hubble observations. He wouldn't be surprised if there are more, but noted it will take a spacecraft in orbit around Neptune to find them.
32. What can we know about Hippocamp?
A. It can give out light. B. It resembles a sea horse.
C. It is nearer to Neptune than Proteus is. D. It is 7.500 miles far from Neptune.
33. How was Hippocamp formed according to Showalter?
A. Two moons orbited too close and hit each other.
B. A heavenly object crashed into Proteus.
C. Collisions with satellites repeatedly happened to Neptune.
D. A comet knocked Neptune's largest moon.
34. What does the underlined phrase“rule out" probably mean?
A. Consider. B. Prove. C. Forbid. D. Dismiss.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Neptune and its moons. B. A newly-found satellite.
C. The exploration of more little moons. D. A discovery by Hubble observations.

Chinese Fans
The fan is an instrument that is held in the hand and moved back and forth to cool a person.
36 This hand-held rigid (堅硬的) or folding device is often composed of material such as feathers or paper.
37 Fans were carried both by men and women for ceremony and as a dressing accessory (配套飾品) . With so much significance attached to the fan, much attention was paid to its decoration. And the delicate taste displayed in the design of high-quality. Chinese fans has rarely really been equaled. In Europe the painting of fan leaves was, until the 19th century, work of artisans-clever decorators at best. In China, on the other hand, many great painters devoted their talents to the decoration of the fan. 38
The rigid fan was the more common type in China up to the end of the Song Dynasty, but during the Ming Dynasty the folding fan seems to have come into fashion. It’s possible that a few examples of such fans reached Europe during the Middle Ages. The Portuguese trade opened up the sea route to China in the 15th century, however, were probably the first to bring the Eastern fans to Europe. 39 By the end of the 17th Century an enormous number of Chinese fans were reaching Europe. These were mostly rather poor quality by Eastern standards, for they were made for the less distinguishing European market. But the delicacy and skill making them fashionable attracted the Europeans. 40
A. They became hot cakes in the market.
B. It is usually shaped like a circle or part of a circle.
C. The fan has always been in the favor of the Chinese.

E. So it is more than an instrument for producing a current of air.
F. Artwork in the Ming Dynasty perfected in color painting and printing.
G. The Chinese character for "fan" is from a picture of feathers under a roof.
