My thin smile didn't match his broad grin, because I had wished for a guitar or a piano. Shortlyafter my lessons began, I was ordered to practice half an hour every day. Gradully, I was able to string notes together and play simple songs. Someday, I found a case at home. Opening it, I saw a beautiful violin. "It's your father's, "Mom said. "His parents bought it for him. I guess he got too busy on the farm to ever learn to play it. "I tried to imagine Dad's rough hands on this delicate instrument— and couldn't. With the fall school concert nearing, I would have to play a solo(獨奏)on a local movie theater's stage. I wanted to skip the whole thing. Emotions boiled over in the car one Sunday afternoon. "I don't want to play a solo, " I said. "You have to, "replied my father. "Why?"I shouted. "Because you didn't get to play your violin when you were a kid? Why should I have to play this stupid instrument when you never had to play yours?"Dad pulled the car over. "Because you can bring people joy. "He added softly, "Someday you'll have chance I never had: you'll play beautiful music for your family. ""I was speechless. I had rarely heard Dad speak with such feeling about anything, much less the accordion. The evening of the concert, I walked onto the stage and performed without a mistake. Dad slipped an arm around me and held me close. "You were just great, "he said. Then he shook my hand and was slow to let it go. Dad never learned to produce sweet sounds from his violin. Yet he was wrong to think he would never for his family. Every time my husband and children laughed and danced, hearing my accordion, I know it was my father's music. 24. My journey to an accordionist.CHave you ever wondered why elephants get so big? Thanks to their enormous size, they have been able to survive for thousands of years in all kinds of circumstances. Their size has allowed them to reach high food sources, knock down trees instantly and find water underground. Not only does their size benefit them but also their ecosystem. Elephants use their size to create holes in the ground to find water. During droughts(干旱), they will start to dig holes to find water that might be stored underground. Elephants are not just helping themselves but also smaller species. Those water holes that they create become water sources for other species. These holes are essential, especially during droughts. Without elephants, some smaller species would not have access to water. Elephants spend a lot of time eating. To be exact, they spend 12 to 18 hours a day eating. Since they eat so much, they are always on the shift to find food sources. These magnificent creatures can walk up to 50 miles a day. As elephants make their way to their next location, they drop dung(糞便)filled with seeds along the way. Once on the ground, those seeds will begin to grow. The elephant dung helps the seeds shoot. This helps increase the biodiversity of plants and trees. Elephants create homes for other species. Another one of the roles and importance of elephants in the ecosystem is creating homes for smaller creatures. Unexceptional small species do not have the size to knock down trees or create holes in the ground to create a home. These animals rely on elephants to do that for them. Elephants use their powerful kicks and teeth to knock down trees. Small species will then use that as shelter. Furthermore, elephants help spread seeds that grow into trees and plants that animals will call home. 28. What is the cause of elephants' survival for thousands of years?A. Their huge size.     B. Rich food sources. C. Their unique shape.     D. Plenty of water underground.29. How do elephants help increase the biodiversity of plants and trees?A. They eat a lot.      B. They knock down trees. C. They cover a long distance.  D. They produce waste along the way. 30. Which of the following is NOT the function of elephants in the ecosystem?A. They make shelters for other species. B. They dig water holes for other creatures. C. They help the seeds of plants spread and grow. D. They find food sources for other plants and animals. 31. What is the main idea of the passage?A. It encourages people to protect elephants. B. It talks about the importance of elephant dung. C. It introduces the benefits of elephants to the environment. D. It informs readers of the reasons why elephants grow big. DThe Cure for ConcreteDutch microbiologist Hendrik Jonkers studies bacteria. He also has researched how certain living beings are able to heal themselves when injured. When a bone breaks in the human body, it is able to repair itself. Jonkers wondered if bacteria(細(xì)菌)could be used to"heal" nonliving stuff in a similar way. He tested this theory by adding bacteria to concrete(混凝土). He discovered that concrete may also be able to recover from damage. Concrete is one of the most important building materials. It is used to construct highways, bridges, and high-rise buildings. In fact, concrete demand has doubled in the last decade. Concrete production now accounts for 5% of the world's carbon emissions, which is harmful to the environment. Despite its popularity, concrete cracks. When water gets inside the cracks, it weakens the composition of concrete. Eventually the concrete must be repaired or replaced. In Europe the annual cost of maintaining concrete structures is billions of dollars. Jonkers has developed a self-healing concrete, or bioconcrete, to help solve these problems. He combines concrete with bacteria that are naturally able to produce limestone, a hard rock. The bacteria are placed inside plastic containers that are mixed into wet concrete. The bacteria can live in the hardened concrete for decades. When water enters through cracks in the concrete, the plastic containers open, and the bacteria are released. As the bacteria grow and multiply, they form limestone, which fills in the cracks. Jonkers'bioconcrete has been used on the floors and roofs of parking garages and buildings. While bioconcrete has its advantages, it is 50 percent more costly to create than traditional concrete. This makes some people in the construction industry reluctant to use the product. Still, Jonkers believes the initial investment is worth the long-term savings and advantages it will provide—reducing the need for repairs, making new concrete and the amount of carbon pollution. 32. Why does the author talk about " a bone repairing itself" in the first paragraph?A. To stress the importance of Jonker's research. B. To advocate more research concerning bone injuries. C. To suggest that bacteria could improve people's health. D. To show the way concrete can recover from water damage. 33. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?A. The popularity of concrete.    B. The composition of concrete. C. The disadvantage of concrete.    D. The cost of repairing concrete. 34. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?A. pleased.    B. inspired.    C. hesitant   D. unconcerned35. What do we know about bioconcrete?A. It works best in areas affected by flood. B. The bacteria come out whenever it rains. C. It does not need to be repaired or replaced. D. The bacteria can form a hard rock to repair the cracks. 第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2. 5, 滿分12. 5分)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容, 從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。School days mean homework, studying, exams, and social interactionsnot to mention getting up early every morning. On the way home from school, Andy studied the fabrics(面料)and colors of the other students' clothes. Everyone wore the same basic outfit-jeans and some sort of shirt. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing attractive or stylish. Being from a family of tailors(裁縫), Andy had learned how to make and change clothes over years. But he wanted to be more than just a tailor. When Andy arrived at his father's tailor shop, he watched his fatherpins(大頭針)in his mouth, measuring tape hanged around his neckexpertly repair pants. Andy's father always said, "Often, when people look better, they act better too. "That was exactly the reason why Andy longed to create something of his own, something different, something exceptional. "Andy, there's something I want to give you. "Andy's father peered over his eyeglasses and asked Andy to follow him to the back room. On the corner of a large worktable sat a heavy sewing machine(縫紉機), an old model that looked very different from the modern one Andy's father used. "I was your age when my father gave this to me, and now I'm giving it to you. "Andy eyed the old machine appreciatively. "Thank you, Dad. This is perfect!"Andy wanted to use the sewing machine right away to realize his dream--an outstanding outfit. First he drew a design that was stylish yet original and then he paid a visit to the fabric store to select the perfect fabrics for his creation. Andy began working that same night, losing himself in lines and folds, ripping out stitches(縫線)and redoing them.
