One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest (卑微的)to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something?”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?”
“Who?”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs. ” I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!
My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and to meet another human being with kindness and sincerity.

Rubbish is a major kind of environmental pollution. Each person produces about two kilograms of rubbish in our homes a day. And this is only a small part of all the rubbish we produce. We also create waste in industry.
Have you wondered what happens to the rubbish? Most of it is buried in landfills (垃圾填埋地) or burned. Less than 25% of our waste is recycled.
A landfill is carefully designed and it is built into or on top of the ground. Rubbish buried in landfills is cut off from the surrounding environment (groundwater, air, rain, etc).
One problem with landfills is that they cover a lot of land space. If they are not well-built, there is a high risk of polluting the land and water. Some people also say that landfills remove materials for ever. As a result, the materials that can be reused are wasted.
Burning rubbish in factories is another way to cut out waste. Burning reduces 95% of the waste. And if poisonous materials are removed, and burning is completed at controlled temperatures, it is possible to do so without causing too much pollution. Some factories could even produce electricity from the burning process.
Not all of the rubbish can be burned, so we have to separate it before we burn it. However, separation costs a lot of money. Another problem with burning rubbish is that what is left after burning is poisonous. How to safely deal with it is a continuing problem.
Before the mid-20th century, landfills were the main way to deal with waste. In the late 20th century, other ways like recycling have been introduced to help reduce global pollution.
Maybe in the near future, with combined efforts, scientists will find a better way to dispose rubbish and cut out waste, like recycling things. But anyway, mountains of rubbish from life every day is a huge burden for any country.
8. What is the advantage of burying rubbish in landfills?
A. Producing electricity.
B. Reusing the materials buried in landfills.
C. Reducing 95% of the waste.
D. Cutting off rubbish from the surrounding environment.
9. Paragraph 6 is mainly about _________.
A. the separation of rubbish B. the problems with burning rubbish

B. landfills are too dangerous to be built too many
C. there’re advantages and disadvantages about burning rubbish

11. After the last paragraph, what is the author likely to talk about next?
A. Pollution. B. Landfills. C. Recycling. D. Environment.

It cannot be denied that we all want to succeed, whether it is in losing weight or learning the guitar. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. Why does one person succeed where another person fails? I have made a list of four habits to help set goals and achieve them.
Identify your core values
Finding your core values is in line with creating inner motivation. Sit and reflect on what you value most. Pick a handful of things and actually write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day, and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
Pick a goal and focus on it
Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of accomplishment, while adjusting well to your core values. Focus is key here. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.
If you perform a great many tasks at a time, you might never complete your projects because they will take far too long.
Set a deadline for success
To set a date or deadline for success is meaningful and necessary. Identify when you hope to achieve your goal. Keep it realistic, while not giving you too much time. By setting a time limit, you are making the process more real and planned.
Stick to your goal.
Failure can’t be avoided to some extent when you take risks, by its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Remember your mindset (心態(tài)) earlier. Know it will happen. A failure is merely you working out the details, and learning what works and what doesn’t. Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and march on!
In your lifetime, you have many opportunities to succeed. While in the process you may encounter (遭遇) plenty of failures, but on condition that you stick to the four habits above, you will be absolutely successful sooner or later.
12. You would have a better chance to succeed if you _________.
A. reflect on your goal more B. are more concentrated on a goal
C. are more eager to succeed D. try your best to avoid failure
13. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. People are all eager to succeed in life.
B. Realizing core values can make inner motivation.
C. You are bound to succeed if you follow the four habits.
D. failure is sometimes not a bad thing.
14. What does the underlined word “it” in the passage refer to?
A. detail. B. Failure. C. Goal. D. Success.
15. The best title for the passage could be _________.
A. Four Habits to Help You Succeed B. Make the right decision
C. Failure is the mother of success D. Find the core values of success

As a young adult, Noah Webster was a teacher. At that time, the colonies(殖民地) 41 (fight) for independence from Britain. Yet the books that American children used in school all came from Britain. The books were all about British people and British places. Webster wanted books 42 would mean more to American children’s — a grammar book, a spelling book, and a reader. These books were very popular, and millions of them 43 (sell).
Webster was interested in changing the spellings of words. 44 wanted words to be spelled the way they were pronounced. For example, he thought 45 word “head” should be spelled “hed”, and the word “l(fā)augh” should be spelled “l(fā)af”. People liked Webster’s suggestions. Unfortunately, though, few words changed were words in 46 an unpronounced “u” followed an “o”. That is 47 Americans write color and labor, and the British write colour and labour.
With the money he made 48 his books, Webster was able to start on his great work. This work took more than 20 years to write. It was the first American English dictionary, 49 (publish) in 1828. Webster’s dictionary had over 70,000 words and 50 (give) the meaning and origin of each. To this day, Webster’s work is the example that most dictionaries of American English follow.

Dear Fan,
I am very glad to hear from you. And it is pleasure to tell you a day of my school life in Britain. Normally, I got up at 7:30, wash, have breakfast and leave the house in 8 a.m. It takes half of an hour to go to school by bus, and then lessons start at 9. In the morning I have five lessons, each of them is 45 minutes long, with 10 minute breaks between them, stop for lunch at 12:30. I have one hour for lunch at the school canteen. In the afternoon I have another three lesson, and the school finishes at 4. However, whether a student misbehaves at school, the most common punish is being kept at school by the teacher for an hour before school.
Wish you a happy summer holiday!
Yours truly
Wang Ping

1. A 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。 Children and pets are welcome可得出答案為A。
依據(jù)During the trip, you can rest on deck (甲板)及You will visit all the places most people only dream about可知World Sea Trip of 2020的特色在于能夠在船上睡覺及參觀別人參觀不到的很多地方。B項(xiàng)正確。
依據(jù)Equipment is included except walking shoes可知該費(fèi)用不包括鞋的費(fèi)用。
5. A. 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。
Rubbish buried in landfills is cut off from the surrounding environment (groundwater, air, rain, etc).可知選D。
Another problem with burning rubbish is that可知前面已經(jīng)講了關(guān)于燃燒垃圾的一個(gè)問題(燃燒前需分類而且分析成本很高)。
根據(jù)最后一段scientists will find a better way to dispose rubbish and cut out waste, like recycling things可知接下來理應(yīng)是講如何更有效地回收利用廢物。
Pick a goal and focus on it部分的The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.
Failure can’t be avoided to some extent when you take risks, by its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. 所以Know it will happen. A failure is merely you…
I have made a list of four habits to help set goals and achieve them. 符合A項(xiàng)。

20. A 由下面的comprehensive travel insurance可知答案選A正確。

Mrs.
21. B 根據(jù)下一句的When the papers were可知是指數(shù)學(xué)考試。
22. A 由空后的she found that twelve boys had made 23 the same mistakes in the test.
23. D 根據(jù)空后的the same mistakes in the test和下一段首句There is nothing new about cheating可推知,有12個(gè)男孩子在試卷中所犯的錯(cuò)誤是完全一樣的。
24. C 整句話There is 24 new about cheating in 25 .
There is nothing new about cheating in可推知,作弊肯定是在考試時(shí)。
26. C 根據(jù)下一句She only可知,此處作者對(duì)Mrs.
27. B 由空后after class. I was one of the twelve和下一段she wrote the following words on the blackboard: On your way home(這些孩子還沒有回家)可知,既然這12個(gè)孩子作弊,Mrs.
I often think of this: if Mrs. Clara had scolded us可知選C。
29. A 由空后的words on the blackboard可知答案選A合適。
Later someone comes to ask you if you have found some money he lost.
31. B 根據(jù)空后的some money he lost可知,此處是指“有沒有看到/發(fā)現(xiàn)他丟的錢”,只有B項(xiàng)最符合邏輯。
On your way home you find some 30 and …h(huán)e lost. What will you do?
33. A 有上文可知,answer對(duì)應(yīng)question。或者根據(jù)空后的to也可知,answer to the question 問題的答案。
34. B 根據(jù)首段中的she found that twelve boys可知此題選B。
from then on意為“從那時(shí)起”。
37. D 斟酌四個(gè)選項(xiàng),make a promise 作承諾,make a mistake 犯錯(cuò)誤,make a defense 防守,make a decision 作選擇。
39. A 由空前的if Mrs. Clara had scolded us as many other可知Mrs.
40. D 由文章第一、二段可知?;蛘哂傻诙问拙銽here is 24 new about cheating in 25 .
At that time, the colonies可知此處應(yīng)該用過去進(jìn)行時(shí)。
42. that/which 分析句子成分可知 would mean more to American children’s是個(gè)定語從句,先行詞是books,故填which或that均可。
45. the 根據(jù)空后的word “head” should be spelled “hed”, and the word “l(fā)augh”可知此處是特指,故需用定冠詞。
46. which 分析句子成分可知in an unpronounced “u” followed an “o”是個(gè)定語從句且空前已經(jīng)有個(gè)介詞in,故填which。in which=where。
48. from 介詞短語結(jié)構(gòu)With the money he made 48 his books意為“用那些他從書賺來的錢,……”,表“從……”用介詞from。
Webster’s dictionary had over 70,000 words and可知,gave和had是兩個(gè)并列謂語,時(shí)態(tài)要一致。
51. 在is和pleasure之間加my /a此處缺少限定詞。
52. got→get 根據(jù)后面的wash, have breakfast and leave可知要用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)。
53. in→at 表示在多少點(diǎn)用介詞at。
54. 去掉half后的of 表示半小時(shí)用half an hour,不用介詞of。
故用which。
58. whether→if 此處是一個(gè)條件句。故用if。
59. punish→punishment
Dear Alex,
I would like to ask you for help. Would you please take the place of me to take part in the tree planting activity in the People’s Park tomorrow? You know the school sports meeting has taken up much of my time and energy, and I need to adjust myself. You will get together at the school gate at 7 o’clock, and set off by bike for the park. By the way, it is reported that it probably rains tomorrow, so do remember to take your raincoat along with you. Besides, you must bring your own lunch. A million thanks to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
