It has been four years since Grandma Joy told her grandson that she had never seen the most beautiful views of America. Since then, they have gone on many cross-country trips.
Brad Ryan had been feeling tired of studying in a vet school when he visited his 85-year-old grandma in 2015. He hoped that spending some quality family time would help lift his spirits.
As he was telling his grandma stories of his travels, however, he was heartbroken to hear that she had never seen the ocean or mountains. Ryan then asked his grandmother if she would like to go hiking with him. Needless to say, she was more than happy to agree.
They have since visited 29 different national parks across America---from the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to the Acadia National Park in Maine. Over the four years, Ryan and his grandma have driven 25,000 miles through 38 states. And it has greatly affected his quality of life. “Seeing it through my grandmother’s eyes, who every morning wakes up and is thankful to be alive has taught me how to live,” Ryan said. “With her, I’ve had to slow down and see life in a different way, which has made it a lot richer.”
“I love my grandma so much, and it’s just really giving me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her,” he added.
Ryan posted all of their trips on Facebook. He hopes more young people will spare time to be with their elders. “I want young people to know that hanging out with your grandparents is cool. And there’s so much we can learn from our elders,” Ryan said.
21. Why did Brad Ryan visit his grandma in 2015?
A. To cheer himself up. B. To please his grandma.
C. To take his grandma to travel. D. To share his travelling experiences.
22. What influence did Brad Ryan’s grandma have on him?
A. She made him live a better life.
B. She helped him find his life goal.
C. She told him to have peace of mind.
D. She gave him a lot of encouragement.
23. What is Brad Ryan’s purpose of posting their trips online?
A. To advise young people to take a trip.
B. To share his joy of travelling with his grandma.
C. To encourage the young to keep their elders company.
D. To show young people what they can learn from their elders.

Marco Springmann and his colleagues, at the Oxford Martin School’s Future of Food Programme, built computer models that predicted what would happen if everyone became vegetarian by 2050. The results indicate that if the world went vegan (嚴格的素食主義者), the greenhouse gas emissions declines would be around 70%.
In the US, for example, an average family of four emits more greenhouse gases because of the meal they eat than from driving two cars---but it is cars, not steaks, that regularly come up in discussions about global warming.
Food, especially livestock (牲畜,家畜) also takes up a lot of room. 68% of agricultural land in the world is used for livestock. When these lands become grasslands and forests, they would capture carbon dioxide and further ease climate change.
However, if the whole world went vegan, there would be negative effects too. First, it is necessary to keep livestock for environmental purposes. “I’m sitting here in Scotland where the Highlands’ environment is very man-made and based largely on grazing by sheep,” says Peter Alexander, a researcher in socio-ecological systems modeling at the University of Edinburgh. “If we took all the sheep away, the environment would look different and there would be a potential negative impact on biodiversity.”
Plus, meat is an important part of history, tradition and cultural identity. Numerous groups around the world give livestock gifts at weddings, celebratory dinners such as Christmas with turkey or roast beef.
And nowadays, moderation in meal-eating’s frequency and portion size is key to solving these conflicts. “Certain changes would encourage us to make healthier and more environmentally friendly dietary decisions,” says Springmann, “l(fā)ike putting a higher price lag on meat and making fresh fruits and vegetables cheaper.”
In fact, clear solutions already exist for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock industry. What is lacking is the will to carry out those changes.
24.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in the second paragraph?
A.Driving cars is more dangerous than eating steaks in the US.
B.Our dietary choices affecting climate change is often underestimated.
C.People compare the greenhouse gas emissions of the cars and steaks.
D.Cars affect the global warming more seriously than the steaks.
25.Which saying can best show the author’s attitude to livestock?
A.It is hard to please all.
B.Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
C.One cannot see the wood for the trees.
D.Everything is a double-edged sword.
26.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine.
C.A scientific journal. D.An educational review.

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist (生理學家) best known for his discovery of classical conditioning (經(jīng)典條件反射). During his studies on the digestive systems of dogs, Pavlov found that the animals salivated (流口水) naturally upon the presentation of food. However, he also noticed that the animals began to salivate whenever they saw the white lab coat of an experimental assistant. By associating the presentation of food with the lab assistant, he finally found that a dog would salivate to the presence of a stimulus (刺激物) other than food. He called this response a conditional reflex.
Ivan Pavlov was born in a small village in Ryazan. Russia, where his father was the village minister. His earliest studies were focused on theology (神學), but reading Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species had a powerful influence on his future interests. He soon stopped his religious studies and devoted himself to the study of science at the University of Saint Petersburg. Pavlov’s interests were the study of physiology and natural sciences. He helped found the Department of Physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and continued to manage the program for the next 45 years.
Pavlov received much praise for his work. He worked in the Russian Academy of Science and won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology. The Soviet government also offered lots of support for Pavlov’s work, and the Soviet Union soon became a leading center of research on physiology. While Ivan Pavlov was not a psychologist, and reportedly disliked the field of psychology, his work had a major influence on the field, particularly on the development of behaviorism. His discovery and research on reflexes influenced the growing behaviorist movement. and Pavlov’s discovery had a major influence on many thinkers, such as John B.Watson.
27.What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.The dogs in the studies liked the color white.
B.It was found that a dog would only salivate to food.
C.Ivan Pavlov discovered the conditional reflex by accident.
D.Ivan Pavlov’s assistant had a close relationship with the dogs.

The comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink (溜冰場). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
“If I can win today,” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”
Laurie was just told that she had a tough competition this year, a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her age. The young woman put some of her belongings onto a chair. However, the bag fell to the floor.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competition,” thought Laurie. “Because of her, I may lose tonight.”
“This costume was my mum’s idea,” Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “I look like a flag.”
Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Some stuff fell out of your bag,” Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny,” called someone, “you’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.”
“I thought I gave him my music tape half an hour ago,” said Jinny. “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials (姓名首字母) written in white in the right-hand corner.”
“He claims you never gave it to him, and he is getting angry.”
“Then I don’t know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.

讀后續(xù)寫:One possible version
Para 1: Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table. She pulled it out,and saw the white initials in the top right-hand corner. “It’s Jinny’s music tape!” She exclaimed. Laurie’s heart started beating fast. “All I’d have to do is forget that I found this,” she thought. “If Jinny doesn’t have her music, she might as well not skate. And then I would win.” Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered, “Does winning mean so much to me that I’d be willing to cheat for it?” She walked to the door and called Jinny loudly.
Para 2: Feeling relieved,Laurie skated quickly to the centre of the rink after the announcer finally called her name. The music filled the stadium and she skated gracefully and beautifully. Her left knee was fine and she felt herself gliding on the ice. The audience applauded from time to time, enthusiastically supporting her in her comeback. When she finished, her coach ran up to her and hugged her. “You did it, Laurie!” she said. Laurie smiled and thought about Jinny’s music tape. “No one will ever know how close I really came to losing,” she said softly to herself.

You’ll have all your classes here in this building and all the professors from Canada are working here, so you can talk with them in your spare time. By associating the presentation of food with the lab assistant, he finally found that a dog would salivate to the presence of a stimulus (刺激物) other than food. He called this response a conditional reflex.”
