W:?Today, let’s begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don’t try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.

Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged. What's worse, it may cause major professional or personal trouble and lead to negativity. Basically, failure is no fun for most people. However, a vast body of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety.
It's hard to change the mindset (心態(tài)) of a lifetime. But even if we still can't get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.
Christy Pennison, a professional consultant, says she works with an increasing number of kids and teens who show significant anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, "We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we frequently tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children experiencing internal and sometimes extenal pressure think they shouldn't fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don't live up to a certain standard, or things don't go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious."
Pennison argues that failures, are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-image.
So what can parents do to help their children embrace (擁抱) failure instead of avoiding it at all costs? Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. "This allows children to build confidence in themselves, "she explains." Acknowledging the effort can give children permission to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset —'I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.'—helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities." As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters.
24. What aspect do most people focus on when thinking of failure?
A. The great courage to face it.
B. The efforts made to handle it.
C. Unexpected benefits it brings.
D. Unpleasant side effects it brings.
25. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?
A. Bring up the main topic.
B. List the challenges in our life.
C. Add some background information.
D. Stress the importance of the mindset
26. What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph?
A. The causes of children's anxiety.
B. Christy Pennison's comments on adolescents.
C. The consequences of overprotecting children.
D. Christy Pennison's experience in educating children.
27. Which of the following advice can help parents encourage kids to face failure?
① Praise kids' every achievement.
② Make kids embrace a bright mindset.
③ Focus on the process of kids' effort
④ Expand kids' knowledge about the world.
⑤ Encourage kids to make new attempts.
A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ②③⑤ D. ①③⑤
D 25. A 26. A 27. C

根據(jù)第一段關(guān)鍵句“Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged.”和“Basically, failure is no fun for most people.”
根據(jù)第二段關(guān)鍵句“But even if we still can't get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.” 故選A項(xiàng)。
瀏覽第三段內(nèi)容,根據(jù)第三段關(guān)鍵句“Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don't live up to a certain standard, or things don't go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious.” 故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)最后一段關(guān)鍵句“Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result.” 表述與③ Focus on the process of kids' effort(關(guān)注孩子努力的過程)一致。再根據(jù)最后一段關(guān)鍵句“And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset —'I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.'—helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities.” 表述與② Make kids embrace a bright mindset.(讓孩子擁有光明的心態(tài))和⑤ Encourage kids to make new attempts.(鼓勵(lì)孩子們做出新的嘗試)一致。故選C項(xiàng)。

The different parts of a health care system have different focuses. A hospital's stroke (中風(fēng)) unit monitors blood flow in the brain. The cardiac unit is interested in that same flow, but through and from the heart. Each collection of equipment and data is effective in its own field. Thus, like the story of blind men feeling an elephant, modern health care offers many separate pictures of a patient, but rarely a useful united one.
On top of all this, the instruments that doctors use to monitor health are often expensive, as is the training required to use them. That combined cost is too high for the medical system to scan regularly, for early signs of illness, so patients are at risk of heart disease or a stroke.
An unusual research project called AlzEye, run by Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, in cooperation with University College, London (UCL) , may change this. It is attempting to use the eye as a window through which signals about the health of other organs could be discovered. The doctors in charge of it, Siegfried Wagner and Pearse Keane, are studying Moorfields' database of eye scans, which offers a detailed picture of the health of the retina (視網(wǎng)膜).
The project will go a step further:With the information about other aspects of patients' health collected from other hospitals around England, doctors will be able to look for more accurate signs of disease through eye scans.
The Moorfields data set has lots of linked cases to work with--far more than any similar project. For instance, the UK Biobank, one of the world's leading collections of medical data about individual people, contains 631 cases of a "major cardiac adverse event". The Moorfields data contain about 12, 000 such. The Biobank has data on about 1, 500 stroke patients. Moorfields has 11, 900. For the disease on which the Moorfields project will focus to start with dementia, the data set holds 15, 100 cases. The only comparable study has 86.
Wagner and Keane are searching for patterns in the eye that show the emergence of disease elsewhere in the body. If such patterns could be recognized reliably, the potential impact would be huge.
28. Why does the author mention “the story of blind men feeling an elephant” in Paragraph 1?
A. To claim the ineffectiveness of our health care system.
B. To tell the similarity in various health care units.
C. To explain the limitation of modern health care.
D. To show the complexity of patients' pictures.
29. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The challenge of making advanced medical instruments.
B. The high risk of getting a heart disease or a stroke
C. The inconvenience of modern health care service.
D. The incomplete and expensive health monitoring.
30. How does AlzEye work?
A. By thoroughly examining one's body organs.
B. By identifying one's state of health through eye scans
C. By helping doctors discover one's diseases of the eye
D. By comparing the eye-scan data from different hospitals.
31. What can be inferred about the Moorfields's project from Paragraph 5?
A. It takes advantage of abundantly available medical data.
B. It makes the collection of medical data more convenient.
C. It improves the Moorfields' competitiveness in the medical field.
D. It strengthens data sharing between the Moorfields and the Biobank.

Hardware in general, and smartphones in particular, have become a huge environmental and health problem in the Global South's landfill sites
Electronic waste( e-waste ) currently takes up 5 percent of all global waste, and it is set to increase rapidly as more of us own more than one smartphone, laptop and power bank. They end up in places like Agbogbloshie on the outskirts of Ghana's capital, Accra. It is the biggest e-waste dump in the world, where 10, 000 informal workers walk through tons of abandoned goods as part of an informal recycling process. They risk their health searching for the precious metals that are found in abandoned smartphones.
But Agbogbloshie should not exist. The Basel Convention, a 1989 treaty, aims to prevent developed nations from unauthorized dumping of e-waste in less developed countries. The e-waste industry, however, circumvents the regulations by exporting e-waste labelled as "secondhand goods" to poor countries like Ghana, knowing full well that it is heading for a landfill site.
A recent report found Agbogbloshie contained some of the most dangerous chemicals. This is not surprising: smartphones contain chemicals like mercury (水銀),lead and even arsenic(砷). Reportedly, one egg from a free-range chicken in Agbogbloshie contained a certain chemical which can cause cancer and damage the immune system at a level that's about 220 times greater than a limit set by the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA) . Most worryingly, these poisonous chemicals are free to pollute the broader soil and water system. This should concern us all, since some of Ghana's top exports are cocoa and nuts.
Some governments have started to take responsibility for their consumers' waste. For example, Germany has started a project that includes a sustainable (可持續(xù)的)recycling system at Agbogbloshie, along with a health clinic for workers. However, governments cannot solve the problem alone, as there is an almost limitless consumer demand for hardware, especially when governments green policies are focused on issues like climate change.
Only the manufacturers can fix this. A more economically sustainable and politically possible solution is through encouraging hardware manufacturers to make the repair, reuse and recycling of hardware profitable, or at least cost-neutral.
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Electronic products need improving urgently.
B. Electronic waste is too complex to get fully recycled.
C. Electronic waste requires more landfill sites across Ghana.
D. Electronic pollution is a burning question in Agbogbloshie.
33. What does the underlined word "circumvents" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Tightens. B. Abolishes.
C. Gets around. D. Brings in.
34. What should be the biggest concern according to the text?
A. The violation of EFSA's standards.
B. The lack of diversity in Ghana's exports.
C. The damage to chicken's immune system.
D. The threat of polluted food around the world.
35. What does the author think is the best solution to the e-waste problem?
A. Manufacturers' developing a sustainable hardware economy.
B. Governments' adjusting their green policies about e-waste.
C. Reducing customers 'demands for electronic products.
D. Letting governments take on the main responsibility.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour. ”
Groups of incoming freshmen happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother's side to tour the campus with other freshmen;I felt a little anxious.
We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made casual introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this ? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college. . . ?
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, "Hi, I'm Jennifer. " "I'm Lauren, "I replied. "Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus? "she smiled. "I'm not sure, "I said. "You should live on campus! It will be a lot of fun! "she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (課程公告)and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn't even opened my course catalog (目 錄).
"Focus, "I told myself. "Just read through the catalog and find the courses you like and a schedule that works. "Psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, History, sections 1, 2, 3. . . The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it?I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.

(One possible version)
Paragraph 1:
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms. Many of them rushed out to meet their parents. I couldn’t breathe and was feeling anxious. My head was pounding. Moments later, I was crying. And several students started to stare at me. One of the seniors in charge walked over to my table. “What’s the matter?” she asked impatiently. “I... I can’t do this!” I said. “All you have to do is make your schedule, just like everybody else,” she said, clearly annoyed.
Paragraph 2:
Then, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder. I looked back and found Jennifer standing behind me. “Everything is alright,” she told the senior. “I’ll help her.” The senior walked away. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” Jennifer asked. Hearing Jennifer’s kind words, I cried even harder, saying, “It’s just too much!” Then Jennifer put her arm around me and said, “Let me instruct you.” She then guided me through the process step by step until I completed my schedule. Later, when saying goodbye, we made a promise to keep in touch.
