Scientists have fund that the cnnectins between humans and their dgs have the Same bichemical basis as the mther-child bnd, and it's strengthened by the same thing: a gaze (注視).
A new study in Science, led by Takefumi Kikusui f Azabu University in Japan, carried ut a series f experiments that examined the impact f the gaze in the dgs and their wners. “Our data suggest that wner-dg bnding is similar t human parent-child bnding,” Kikusui said. “And this is surprising t us because there is nt a mther-baby relatinship between humans and dgs, but bth f them have acquired similar skills.”
The researchers fund that when wners and their dgs gazed int ne anther’s eyes during a 30-minute perid, levels f xytcin (催產(chǎn)素)increased in bth the humans and the dgs. Oxytcin is a chemical assciated with trust and maternal (母性的)bnding — it increases when yu’re clse t smene yu lve and gives yu that warm feeling. Kikusui aid he believed the gaze was learned by dgs as part f their effrts t cmmunicate and frm scial bnds with humans.
The latest studies have shwn that dgs prbably evlved frm wlves abut 15,000 years ag,in Eurpe. Interestingly, Kikusui didn't find the same xytcin respnse in wlves and their wners. “These results suggest that wlves d nt use gazes as a frm f scial cmmunicatin with humans, which might be expected because wlves tend t use eye cntact as a threat,” the researchers wrte.
Duke university’s Evan MacLean and Brian Hare said, “This is particularly true when it cmes t hw dgs understand the scial wrld. Even as yung dgs, they naturally respnd t human gestures, such as pinting cues, t find hidden fd r ty rewards.”
MacLean said he felt the Japanese study strengthens the idea that the human-dg relatinship is like a parent-child relatinship and culd help explain the bilgical basis that are invlved in the use f dgs in medicine t treat sme diseases r varius frms f stress.
“If it turns ut there are benefits f using xytcin fr sme f these disabilities, using assistance dgs will actually be a fairly natural way t cause the system t start wrking,” he said. “There may be sme srt f medicinal value f ur cmmunicatin with dgs that we culd use.”
