In the west f the city Seville in Spain, a sea f giant mirrrs is reflecting the sun's energy t prvide "cncentrated slar pwer (CSP)" while brightening the path t a new wave f green energy prjects.
The 624 carefully psitined mirrrs reflect the sun's heat twards a 50-meter-tall central twer where it is cncentrated and used t bil water int steam. The superheated steam is then used t turn a turbine(汽輪機)that can prduce up t 11 megawatts f electricity-enugh pwer fr 6, 000 hmes-accrding t Slucar, the Spanish cmpany that has built the pwer plant.
The Spanish twer, knwn as PS 10, is the first stage f an ambitius develpment. By 2025 it is hped that additinal twers will create "a slar farm" with an utput f 500 megawatts, which wuld be enugh pwer fr 180, 000 hmes, almst the entire ppulatin f nearby Seville.
CSP prduces n greenhuse gases and the nly pllutin is visual. There is als the pssibility that prductin can keep ging arund the clck-even when the sun has gne dwn. Slucar is currently testing technlgy at a plant near Granada that will pump 50 percent f the electricity generated in the day int the Spanish natinal grid(國家輸電網(wǎng)), and use the ther 50 percent t melt salt, which will then act as a kind f battery, string the sun's pwer. When dusk falls, the heat stred in the mlten salt can be used t generate pwer thrugh the night.
The Sahara, the wrld's largest desert, has always been seen as a prblem. But with large-scale CSP prjects, suddenly all that empty space, with its year-rund clear skies and ht sun, has a value that culd transfrm lcal ecnmies. It culd ptentially turn Africa int an exprter f energy t pwer-hungry Eurpe.
8. What is the Spanish twer PSIO used t d accrding t the text?
A. Stre biled water. B. Generate electricity.
C. Reflect the sun's energy. D. Brighten the path nearby.
9. The underlined phrase "a slar farm" in paragraph 3 refers t a place where .
A. twers like PS 10 are set up B. greenhuses are built t make prfits
C. crps are grwn with new technlgy D. farmers mainly use slar energy at hme
10. The plant near Granada melts salt in the day s that .
A. mlten salt wrks better than water when prducing electricity
B. melting salt can reduce envirnmental pllutin
C. sme sun pwer can be saved fr the night use
D. salt is easy t melt in the sun
11. Which wrd can best describe the authr's attitude twards the future f CSP?
A. Critical. B. Dubtful. C. Subjective. D. Optimistic.

Plut(冥王星)is a cld wrld far frm us in the uter part f ur slar system. But researchers believe Plut may have been brn as a much warmer place. They say it may even have sheltered(隱藏)a subsurface r undergrund cean-ne that still exists tday.
A reprt n Plut appeared in the scientific jurnal Nature Gesciences. The lead authr was Carver Biersn, a planetary scientist at the University f Califrnia, Santa Cruz. In the reprt, researchers pinted t evidence fr a "ht start" situatin at Plut's beginning, sme 4.5 billin years ag.
Their study was based n images f the dwarf(矮小的)planet's surface as well as cmputer mdels f the subsurface. "When Plut was frming, new material wuld have been cming in and impacting its surface," Biersn said. "Each impact is like an explsin that wuld warm the nearby area." Biersn explained that if Plut had frmed slwly, the surface wuld have cled between each impact and generally stayed very cld. But if Plut had frmed quickly, the surface may nt have had time t cl dwn.
"If Plut frmed in less than 30, 000 years, the heat frm these impacts culd have been sufficient t lead t an early cean. Plut may have an icy uter shell hundreds f kilmeters thick n the tp f an cean f water, pssibly mixed with salts and ammnia(氨). A slid rcky cre culd lie belw," Biersn said.
The researchers believe that parts f the cean wuld gradually freeze ver time. Water expands as it freezes, and cracks n Plut's surface may be evidence f this. At present, Plut's surface temperature is abut minus 230 degrees Celsius.
A subsurface cean culd make Plut a pssible, althugh unlikely, candidate fr having living rganisms. Biersn said it was pssible that cntact between water and the rcky cre culd have created certain chemical elements. "Are thse the right elements fr life? We dn't knw. We need t learn mre abut hw life frms, r hw life culd frm, t find these answers," Biersn said.
12. Accrding t Biersn, what may result in the undergrund cean?
A. Smething like an explsin. B. Lng distance frm the sun.
C. Salts mixed with ammnia. D. Lw temperature.
13. Why are there many cracks n Plut?
A. Life n it had made them. B. Planets crashed billins f years ag.
C. Aliens frm ther planets created them. D. There might be water and it expands when freezing.
14. What can we learn frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. Plut used t have life.
B. Plut has living rganisms.
C. Scientists are wrking t figure ut the rigin f life.
D. Chemicals created by water and rcky cre are the right elements fr life.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Plut Was Brn with a Universal Explsin B. Plut May Have Ever Started Out Very Ht
C. Plut Lies at the Edge f the Slar System D. Plut Is a Cld Wrld
