If you find yourself hitting the snooze button(鬧鐘延時按鈕) every morning, don't blame yourself. Your work schedule could be to blame.
Research now shows that, for many of us, our work schedules don't go with our natural body clocks—and experts are urging employers to take notice. Sleep is a “strategic resource” that most companies are ignoring. When work schedules are aligned with people's natural sleep patterns, they produce higher quality and more reformatory work because they are more focused, less stressed and generally healthier. The opposite is also true—when employees are not getting enough sleep they are more likely to make major mistakes and suffer from workplace injuries.
But it's not just about the amount of sleep you get. It's important that people recognize every living thing, from bacteria to human beings, has a biologically determined internal body clock. This determines whether you are a night owl(夜貓子), an early bird or somewhere in the middle. We don't have any choice. “It's like feet,” said Till Roenneberg, a professor of chronobiology(生物鐘學(xué)). “Some people are born with big feet and some with small feet, but most people are somewhere in the middle.”
Many companies start the workday at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m., putting their work schedules in disagreement with their employees' body clock. This mismatch, along with the pressure to be productive and be available to respond to email or take calls at all hours of the day and night, means that many people suffer from what is called “social jet lag” .
24.The underlined word “l(fā)igned” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.
A.matched B.cooperated C.conflicted D.shortened
25.What does Till Roenneberg' s remark mean?
A.The amount of sleep you get counts much. B.An early bird does better than a night owl.
C.We are born to have a body clock. D.Most people have neither too big nor too small feet.
26.If people suffer from “social jet lag”, they will ________.
A.not be as clever as other people B.fail to finish their daily tasks
C.fail to adjust their body clock D.a(chǎn)ct as if they were in the wrong time zone
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Body clock and good work habits B.Late to get up for work? Maybe not your fault
C.How to improve your work efficiency D.Urgent need to change your body clock

There is a beautiful story I heard once about a child playing with a vase that his mother had left on the table for a few moments. When the mother turned at the sound of her son crying, she saw that his hand was in the vase and was apparently stuck. She tried to help him and pulled and pulled until the child cried out in pain. But the hand was stuck fast. How would they get it out? The father suggested breaking the vase but it was quite valuable and the child’s hand might be cut in the process. Yet he knew that if all else failed, there would be no other alternative. So he said to the boy, “Now, let’s make one more try. Open your hand and stretch your fingers out straight, like I’m doing, and then pull!” “But Dad,” said the boy, “if I do that, I’ll lose my penny!”
The boy had had a coin in his hand all the time and was holding it securely in his tight little fist. And he wasn’t prepared to open his hand and lose the penny. But once he opened his hand, it came out of the vase easily.
I used to hold on to things in my life that I thought were so important to me. Early in my marriage, all I cared about was becoming the best volleyball player in the state of Wisconsin. One year, when Kristi was working shifts at General Motors, I played in 1,400 games, competing four nights a week and 40 out of 52 weekends. My team won over 1,000 games. Success on the volleyball court, but a huge loss in my relationship with my Kristi.
When I finally let go, I looked back at what I had done and was ashamed. Not only did I show my wife she wasn’t the most important thing to me, but I missed out on a lot of relationship building time. My life is so much richer now that I am not a slave to the drive to be the best player I could be.
28.Why did the boy get his hand stuck in the vase?
A.He had a coin in his hand. B.He didn’t know how to stretch his fingers.
C.He was afraid to break the vase. D.His hand was hurt inside the vase.
29.The author tells the story about the boy and the vase to show ______.
A.how naughty a little boy can be B.we need to drop the unimportant things in our life
C.a(chǎn) little boy may do something silly D.money is not the most important for us
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author had his relationship with Kristi improved.
B.The author didn’t regret what he had done.
C.The author still plays volleyball as much as before.
D.Kristi left the author in the end.
31.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A.The Beautiful Vase in Your Life B.The Way of Keeping Balance in Life
C.My Dream of Becoming the Best Volleyball Player D.Holding On to What Is Important
D
Ramen noodles have been a go-to food for students for decades. After all, they only take eight minutes to cook in a dorm hotpot and are easy on the budget. Holly Grounds, a recent project design graduate of Ravens Bourne University, in London, used to eat a lot of ramen noodles when she studied. But it got her thinking that the packaging of a product that takes just minutes to cook and eat shouldn’t take decades or more to decompose(分解). That’s why she decided to make eatable wrappers for noodles, avoiding the need for plastic.
Grounds wanted to produce a product that the user could watch actually dissolve in the pot, unlike other bio-based films(包裝膜)that are being developed. “While other bio-based alternatives to plastic claim to be compostable(可用作堆肥的), from a consumer perspective it’s not always that simple,” she said. “Many of the emerging(新興的) bio-based films only break down in an industrial composter at 50 degrees Celsius, so they often end up in the wrong place without the consumer really knowing that they caused damage to the planet.”
Now, instead of plastic packs of seasonings(調(diào)料), the dried spices and flavorings are part of a flavorless bioplastic film that wraps the noodles and keeps them fresh. The film dissolves in less than a minute when it comes into contact with boiling water, according to Grounds, and the liquid becomes the sauce for the noodles and larger ingredients like dried shrimp.
“The ingredients are mixed and heated until the mixture is thick enough. At this point, I add the spices and flavorings before pouring it into a mold(模具) to set for 24 hours,” Grounds said. These noodle parcels are then packaged in a wax-coated paper.
With plastics taking hundreds of years to decompose and filling landfills and oceans globally, eatable packaging and single-use items are seen as the way to go. Grounds sees opportunities to use her eatable packaging for other ready meals and she wants to contribute to the global fight against single-use plastics.
32.Why does Grounds want to replace plastic wrappers with eatable ones?
A.The plastic ones are not eco-friendly. B.The plastic ones do harm to our health.
C.The eatable ones appeal to more consumers. D.The eatable ones save more cooking time.
33.What makes the bio-based films fail to be compostable in practice?
A.The immature technology. B.The high cost of dissolving.
C.Their special material composition. D.Their specific decomposing conditions.
34.What do we know about the eatable wrapper according to paragraph 3?
A.It ensures longer preservation time. B.It requires a special cooking method.
C.It ends up as the sauce for food. D.It improves the taste and flavor of noodles.
35.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The method of using the eatable noodle wrappers.
B.The process of making the eatable noodle wrappers.
C.The packaging design for the eatable noodle wrappers.
D.The storage requirements for the eatable noodle wrappers.

The Coming-of-Age Ceremony
Last Friday afternoon witnessed the grand Coming-of-Age Ceremony intended for us Senior Three students.
All the students and teachers gathered on the sports field at 16:00 punctually. There were various activities to celebrate the coming 18-year-old birthday. Firstly, we walked across the Coming-of- age Gate, which means we are grown-ups (who are to shoulder social responsibilities). What impressed me most was the moment when all of us were crowned and then made an oath about what should be done as civilized youths under the Constitution. At last, we let our dreams fly, carried by balloons.
Thanks to the ceremony, I realize how much our parents and teachers had done for me. Now we have grown up and should be self-disciplined and responsible for our behavior, as well as treasure our youth and learn to be independent. Hence a brilliant future is waiting for us diligent students.
