Dear Alfred,
I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.
Growing up , I had people telling me I was too slow , though , with an IQ of 150+ at 17 , I’m anything but stupid . The fact was that I was found to have ADHD (注意力缺陷多動(dòng)障礙). Anxious all the time , I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time .
However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed . In high school , I became curious about the computer , and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics , plus five relevant(有關(guān)的) pre-college courses .
While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse . I wanted to go to college after high school , but couldn’t . So, I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center .
Since then , I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics . Currently , I’m learning your Probability course . I have hundreds of printer paper , covered in self-written notes from your videos . This has given me a purpose .
Last year , I spent all my time looking for a job where , without dealing with the public , I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to . Luckily , I discovered the job ---- Data Analyst ---- this month and have been going full steam ahead . I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession , without going to college , and be just as good as , if not better than , my competitors .
Thank you . You’ve given me hope that I can follow my heart . For the first time , I feel good about myself because I’m doing something , not because someone told me I was doing good . I feel whole .
This is why you’re saving my life .
Yours ,
Tanis

As a teenager , when my family took a vacation , I wrote postcards to show my friends the new places I had explored . I considered postcards as simply a way to share travels until I came across my grandmother’s postcard album (冊(cè)子).
It was a dark gray leather album , where most of the postcards had pictures that did not reflect (反映) a holiday or a travel destination . Instead , the notes were mostly invitations to a dinner or a walk the next day .
“ Why do these postcards ask you to come to tea ?” I asked my grandmother.
“ Because this is how we communicated before we had a telephone ,” she said . “ I would pop a postcard in the morning mail , and a friend would receive it that afternoon . Then she’d post a reply that arrived in my mail the next morning .”
I was surprised . Life without a phone sounded like something out of Little House on the prairie (草原). Connecting by postcards seemed as unexpected as seeing a carrier pigeon (信鴿) .
I had forgotten about my grandmother’s postcards until lockdowns restricted (limited) our trips to seeing our three granddaughters . Remembering my grandmother’s album , I bought several sets of cards and every few weeks , I’d write notes and mail them . The girls occasionally responded with brief thank-you texts .
Then one day I opened my mailbox and spied three hand-addressed envelopes . They were from my granddaughters , each thanking me for my postcards . The notes captured (recorded) their disappointment with the pandemic(疫情) and how my messages had comforted them .
I had been thinking how my grandmother had accepted the telephone as a new way to keep relationships . Like her , I accepted the girls’ preferred mode of communication and texted my thanks for their letters . Yet , even as the lockdowns end , I will continue to send them postcards because everyone enjoys receiving a real letter in the mail .
24. Why did the author’s grandmother write postcards ?

There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little bit of whisky (威士忌) at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle . When Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1873 she wrote in her diary , “ I never saw a lovelier spot .” And she didn’t even go fishing .
Scotland is not easily defined(定義) . In certain moments , this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes . When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light , the rivers , teeming with fish , can turn into streams of gold . As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy , near the Inverlochy Castle , any frustration (煩惱) will float away as gently as the circling water . It’s just you and purple , pink , white flowers , seeking a perfect harmony(和諧) . If you are a new comer to fishing , learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime’s fun . For many , fishing is more than a sport ; it is an art .
Scotland offers interesting places where you can rest after a long day’s fishing . Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland , the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland’s mountains . Ben Nevis is the highest of all British mountains , and reaching its 1343-metres top is a challenge . But it’s not just what goes up that matters ; what comes down is unique . More than 900 metres high , on the mountain’s north face , lies an all-important source of pure water . Its name comes from the Gaelic language “ usquebaugh” or “ water of life” ; and it is the single most important ingredient (原料)in Scotland’s best known drink : whisky .
28. The story of Queen Victoria is to show that ______________ .
` A. the Queen is rich in tour experience B. the Castle is a good place to go in Scotland
C. tasting whisky is better than going fishing D. 1873 is a special year for the Queen
29. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed ?
A. By giving descriptions . B. By following time order .
C. By analyzing causes . D. By making comparisons .
30. What is Ben Nevis special for ?
A. The Iverlochy Castle Hotel . B. The beauty of its surroundings .
C. The water from the mountain . D. The challenge up to its top .
31. What is the main purpose of the passage ?
A. To introduce Scottish traditions to tourists .
B. To show the attractions of Scotland to readers .
C. To explore geographical characteristics of Scotland .
D. To describe the pleasures of life in Scotland .
D
If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment(失業(yè)) from your computer major classmates , you may have had the last laugh . There are many advantages for the social science major(專業(yè)) because this high-tech “Information Age” demands people who are flexible (靈活的) and who have good communication skills .
There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions . For example , a number of research studies found that social majors had achieved greater managerial success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses . Studies show that social science majors are most suitable for change , which is the leading features (特點(diǎn)) of the kind of high-speed , high-pressure , high-tech world we now live in .
Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs , but they are also finding jobs more easily . A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage(百分率) of their entry-level positions with social science graduates . The study also showed that the most sought-after(很吃香的) quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills , noted as “very important” by 92 percent of the companies . Social science majors have these skills , often without knowing how important they are . It is probably due to these skills that they have been offered a wide variety of positions .
Finally , although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job , recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study .
32. By saying that “you may have had the last laugh” in the first paragraph , the author means that you may
have ___________.
A. shared the jokes with computer majors B. earned as much as computer majors
C. found jobs more easily than computer majors D. stopped joking about computer majors
33. Compared with graduates of other subjects , social science graduates __________.
A. are ready to change when situations change B. are better able to deal with difficulties
C. are equally good at computer skills D. are likely to give others pressure
34. The underlined word “ land ” in the last paragraph probably means ___________ .
A. keep for some time B. successfully get
C. immediately start D. lose regretfully
35. According to the text , what has made it easy for social science graduates to find jobs ?
A. Willingness to take low-paid jobs. B. Readiness to gain high-tech knowledge .
C. Skills in expressing themselves . D. Part-time work experience .
Has this ever happened to you ? You’re exhausted after a long working day , and the only thing you want to do is throw yourself on the bed and black out. 36 ! Instead , you’re tossing and turning with your mind occupied with endless thoughts. However tired you are , sleep keeps escaping from you ! The reason for that might be the following seemingly innocent ( 天真的 ) bedtime habits.
Drinking water
It’s true that our body needs to stay hydrated (身體水分的)during the day, but stop “ watering “ it one hour before going to bed, otherwise you’ll be certain to make one , or even a couple of trips to the bathroom , which will rudely interrupt (stop ) your sleep. 37 .
Playing with gadgets (電子產(chǎn)品)
Cut down on your screen time before falling asleep. Not only do gadgets over-stimulate(刺激) your brain , making it restless , but their screens also gives off that disturbing blue light . This light stops your body’s sleep hormone(荷爾蒙) and changes your internal clock (生物鐘) . 38 . Of course , you can choose special night mode on your devices to solve the problem , but the best solution is to power down all hand-held screens an hour before sleeping .
39
It’s believed that eating a lot before going to bed can cause nightmares(噩夢(mèng)) . By eating heavy foods for dinner , your brain is encouraged to be more active , which can lead to vivid nightmares . Besides , a heavy dinner disrupts (擾亂) your digestive system and causes problems with your stomach .
40 . So , try to avoid the bad bedtime habits , and you’ll feel more rested and energetic in the morning and during the next day .
A. Eating less at proper time
B. Eating heavily before sleep
C. But unfortunately , you can’t make it
D. Consequently , your brain doesn’t believe it’s time to go to bed
E. For lack of proper sleep , you can get physically and mentally ill
F. It’s not only about the size of the meal but the time when you have it
G. Moreover , most people hardly fall back asleep after getting up at midnight
