What does it look like, how does it taste, and does it go well with a cup of tea? These were the questions that sprang to mind when a bottle of pea milk landed on our desks.
We tried the milk on its own, as well as in a cup of good old English breakfast tea to see if we could taste the difference. Here are our comments.
“No pea scents (香味)here.”
Echo, Assistant Life Editor
“It smells like normal tea, and if no one told me it was pea milk, I wouldn't know. I was expecting a strong pea taste. It's perfect if you're not keen on other milk alternatives sweet and creamy for me.”
“H tastes surprisingly sweet."
Nancy, Life Editor
"First impression: well, it's not green. In fact, it has more a grey tint(色調(diào))in the glass. On its own, the milk surprisingly sweet, and, I don't like it. However, when you think about it being made from peas, it has a touch of their metallic aftertaste, too. In my tea, it's light and non-creamy."
“It's certainly a choice I would give a go.”
Maggie, Audience Editor
“I never thought I'd want peas in my tea. The tea with pea milk tasted similar to a normal cup of tea, with other various plant-based milk. Of course, it's a choice. I would give it a go as the alternative milk. On its own, I am not so keen.”
21. Why did they taste the tea with pea milk and the pea milk?
A. To decide which they will buy for daily life.
B. To inform customers of fineness of pea milk,
C. To demonstrate their interest in milk culture.
D. To differentiate the taste between the both.
22. How does Echo like the pea milk?
A. It's a little bit sweet. B. It's light and creamy.
C. She is in favor of it. D. She will refuse it.
23. What opinion do Nancy and Maggie share about the pea milk?
A. It is not as popular. B. It is not as normal.
C. It will be my alternative. D. It owns a strange aftertaste.

For one person who passed away, another life supersedes him.
Back in January, Connie Despanic and Benjamin Hall were celebrating the birth of their new born son at the hospital. Though they had agreed on naming him Kingston, they had not yet decided on a middle name. However, they soon found inspiration in an unlikely place; a handwritten letter that was given to them shortly after their son's birth. The letter read, "To my dad's angel, even though I will never know your name, you are the first child born here after my dad's passing. When one life is taken, another is given."
The letter was written by Jamie Fontenot. Her father James had just passed away in the same hospital. As Jamie was missing her father, a sweet song started to play on the overhead speakers. When she asked nurses about the song, they said that the hospital played the song whenever a baby
was born. In her time of heartbreak, Jamie found comfort in the new life that followed her dad's death, so she wrote the letter and asked the nurses to give it to the baby whose birth caused the music.
Upon reading the note, Connie started to cry. She was full of appreciation for the letter. She and her husband agreed that their son's middle name should be James. After delivering the note to the baby's family, the nurses insisted on introducing Jamie to Connie and her new born son. The meeting was an emotional one. And over the course of the last year, the two families have kept in touch and become fast friends.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “supersedes” in paragraph 1?
A. follows B. overlooks C. replaces D. encourages
25. What got Jamie to write such a letter?
A. She intended to teach the baby a life lesson.
B. The father's death left her cherishing the life.
C. The newborn baby made her slightly relieved.
D. She was totally moved at the sight of the baby.
26. What did the couple do after reading the note?
A. They hurriedly went out to ask for help from Jamie.
B. They thanked those nurses for consideration warmly.
C. They asked the nurses to arrange a meeting with Jamie.
D. They middle-named the baby after Jamie's father's name.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Tricks of Deciding a Middle Name
B. The Difference Between Life and Death .
C. A Letter Brought Two Families Together
D. Two Families Related to a Special Letter

Plastic baby bottles shed microplastics when heated. Should you be worried about its side-effects? We still don’t have enough evidence of health risks posed by microplastic consumptions by infants or adults.
“The last thing we want to do is unduly alarm parents," said John Boland, a professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and one of the authors of the Nature Food study. While the health effects of microplastics are still unknown, parents can significantly reduce their infants' exposure by adding some steps to their bottle preparation routine, Boland said. He recommends letting plastic bottles cool completely after sterilization(消毒)in hot water, then washing them out at least three times with water that's been allowed to cool to room temperature after being sterilized by boiling. Researchers here also found that plastic tea kettles, plastic instant noodle cups and plastic food storage containers all released similarly high levels of microplastics when subjected to heat.
As for what those microplastics may be doing in our bodies, the evidence so far is quite limited and unclear. Schwabl, another professor, said that points to a need for more research into microplastics released from plastic food storage containers, especially when they are subjected to higher temperatures. He noted some research has found microplastics can cause inflammation(發(fā)炎) in the organs, while other studies show they do not harm, "The threshold at which they cause problems has not been determined for humans," Schwabl said. For now, Schwabl agrees we shouldn't panic. He's avoiding plastic containers in his daily life - "not so much that I am afraid of the ingestion (吸收),but I think thereby I may be contributing to reducing the amount of plastic waste" that makes its way into the environment.
At the moment, there is no need to be afraid, but it is an open .question and definitely an unmet need.
28. What does the underlined word “unduly” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Properly. B. Extremely. C. Obviously. D. Specially.
29. Which factor counts in the release of microplastics?
A. Temperature. B. products. C. Time. D. Containers.
30. What's Schwabl's attitude towards microplastics?
A. Panic. B. Caring. C. Indifference. D. Critical.
31. How is the passage developed?
A. By providing the examples. B. By reasoning the readers.
C. By analyzing the figures. D. By comparing the findings.

Recently Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, including the China General Chamber of Commerce and China Cuisine Association, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help cultivate new eating habits for customers. ^Restaurants should innovate means of publicity using official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions," the proposal said.
Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.
Catering (餐飲)associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to eliminate food waste. The China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Eleme, the Alibaba Group Holding-owned food delivery platform, to launch a "half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an "N-l" ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required.
To curb portrayals of food waste on social media platforms, popular Chinese video platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and 'implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now if users search certain keywords, such as "eating show" or ''competitive eaters”, a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and maintain a reasonable diet.
32. Why did Meituan start such a proposal?
A. To popularize itself. B. To save itself.
C. To mislead the public. D. To prevent food waste.
33. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Wuhan Catering Association's proposal was a good practice.
B. "half-dish plan, functioned better than "N-l" ordering code.
C. Meituan met with some management challenges.
D. Customers are required to order smaller portions.
34. Which of the following is true?
A. Meituan releases some misleading food information.
B. More food is welcome when we treat our dear friends.
C. Few organizations realized the importance of food waste.
D. Online eating shows are monitored via media platforms.
35. How many good means of avoiding food waste are mentioned here?
A. None. B. Two. C. Three. D. Five.

My dad, Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, was a nice man who didn't talk too much. He used to work as a mechanic fixing army planes, but he was sent back after getting injured. Later, he opened a garage with his friend, who sold it behind his pack. People took advantage of him, but he just turn down a favor.
That's why I felt more than a little confused when a policeman called my office, asking me to pick him up at the station. The old man was found walking alone along the high way. When a police patrol car stopped him, he explained that he was travelling to Nabraska to claim(認(rèn)領(lǐng))his million dollars.
“What million dollars?” I asked Dad, who was sitting quietly in the passengers* seat as we drove home.
Dad took out a wrinkled (折皺的)letter and read, “We are now authorized(授權(quán))to pay one million dollars to Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, Montana?"
I never knew dad wanted to be a millionaire. I asked him what he would do with the prize money, to which he replied that he wanted a new truck. His driver's license has expired(失效)fifteen years ago when he reached his seventies.
I knew that the letter was a trick, but the old man was as stubborn as a mule. He even slept with that, stupid letter in his hand. He memorized it word for word. I didn't think he could memorize anything anymore. He wouldn't stay at home either, but ventured(冒險(xiǎn))out onto the highway again and again, until the police sent him back. In the end, I had to give up. I called in sick at work and the two of us set out in my car to claim his prize.
We travelled past several states. Dad remained silent, while I found it hard to control my temper. Finally, I decided to ask the question, "Why on earth do you need a million dollars for a stupid truck?" Dad replied, "The rest is for you. I wanted to leave you something." His words made me speechless.

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
Possible version:
The following day, we arrived at our destination. What I had foreseen happened: it was a complete trick/cheat. There was no prize money at all. Dad's dream of becoming a millionaire was already broken. The hot weather in Nebraska had crept upon us unawares, and the atmosphere hung heavy over my leaden heart. As for Dad, this bad news seemed to have overpowered him. He leaned his head on his hand like a downhearted old horse bowing beneath the violence of the storm. Looking at my crestfallen father, I made a solution to myself.
On our way back, we stopped at a truck-dealer I walked my Dad to his favorite pickup truck. Looking at the truck, my Dad wore an expression of pleasant surprise on his face. I. told him that we would finish our trip in this truck because he had already got the best prize---me, his beloved son. He burst out laughing and gave me a hug. A sudden shower of rain drove the hot sun away and the dull air changed into a fitful breeze. We drove home in our new truck, laughing and talking like the old days.
