As my kids and I walked arund a cmmunity garden the ther week, I asked them what veggies they culd identify. We were in Alberta, where many plants were still in their early stages f grwth — I wasn’t ptimistic abut what the kids wuld be able t name by leaves alne. Hwever, they called ut, “Tmates! Ptates! Carrts!” Their answers made me even pruder than if they’d just explained sme knwledge f physics. All the time we’ve spent in ur hme garden is actually sinking in.
Althugh I’ve been gardening fr years, this year feels different. Spending time in the garden has helped me with my wn well-being at a trying time, and it has given me a new way t cnnect with my kids when I’m running ut f steam.
My garden is wild, full f life, and a bit messy. Hnestly, the same ges fr my kids — and I dn’t expect perfectin frm them either. Unless yu’re relying n yur yield fr mney r fd, it’s a gd idea t have yur expectatins fr gardening as lw as pssible. My kids say they “l(fā)ve the garden” but “dn’t like gardening” — I think they mean they dn’t like the chres. If I have sme weeding r ptting t d, I’ll als have sme entertainment fr them, which can be as simple as “find these 10 rcks” r “wet this plt with yur water gun”.
Invlving the kids in every stage f the prcess can be pwerful and fun, even if what yu have are just a few cntainers n a balcny. “Gardening allws us t spend free, unscheduled utdr time with ur kids,” writes jurnalist and authr Shannn Brescher Shea in her bk Grwing Sustainable Tgether. “Let yur kids lead the way. Invite them t participate in every step, frm planting t harvesting, but dn’t frce it.”
One f the best things abut gardens is the fd, but frankly, my kids are nt ging t be pushing greens int their muths any time sn. Finding uses fr garden gds that g beynd fd prductin can spark interest and supply yu with sme unexpectedly gd results.
4. What can the authr infer frm her kids’ answers?
A. It’s wrthwhile t spend time in her garden.
B. It’s great t witness her kids’ academic prgress.

A. By giving rewards afterwards.B. By giving mre encuragement.
C. By adding recreatinal activities.D. By asking them t have shrt breaks.
7. What is Shannn’s suggestin n parents’ invlving kids in gardening?
A. Teaching kids the pwer and fun f harvesting.
B. Encuraging kids’ active participatin.
C. Allwing kids t bserve every step carefully.
D. Setting an example fr kids in ding gardening.

The Greek philspher Aristtle nce said, “Fr the things we have t learn befre we can d them, we learn by ding them. ” This methd f “l(fā)earning by ding” has allwed Bareft Cllege t successfully train and educate millins f underprivileged peple. As the funder f the cllege, Sanjit “Bunker” Ry did sme vlunteer wrk in a pr regin f India shrtly after his graduatin frm Deli University. The experience changed his life, and in 1972 he set up the cllege with the aim t help rural cmmunities vercme their difficulties and becme mre independent.
Bareft Cllege is unlike any ther cllege. All f its students arund the wrld are frm pr rural cmmunities. They dn't have t be able t read r write—indeed, many can't. Peple f any age can attend —the schl has a wide range f students, frm children t grandmthers. The cllege is wned and managed by everyne wh wrks and learns here. These “Bareft Prfessinals” are trained t perfrm all srts f duties in the
schl, frm prviding dental care services t cking meals fr staff and students. N degrees r certificates are given ut. But graduates return t their villages with their new skills and wrk t make their cmmunities self-sufficient by training ther villagers. Being able t use their skills t serve their cmmunities is prf f success.
The slar engineering prgram at Bareft Cllege has a significant rle. Every year, the cllege recruits middle-aged wmen frm rural villages that dn't have electricity. Fr six mnths, the wmen learn hw t build, install, use, and maintain slar lamps. The lack f a cmmn language isn't a prblem; they cmmunicate thrugh sign language and wrk with clr-cded equipment. Thrugh hands-n training, the wmen transfrm int slar engineers by the end f the prgram. The self-cnfidence they gain allws them t g n and inspire psitive change in their villages. Since 2008, the wmen have managed t prvide electricity t ver 1, 000 villages, bringing light t mre than 40, 000 husehlds.
Bareft Cllege has demnstrated hw educatin can empwer rural peple and help them live better lives. After its success in India, Bareft Cllege decided t expand its prgrams verseas. Tday, it has a number f reginal training centers in cuntries such as Ethipia, Afghanistan, and Senegal. Thrugh their hard wrk and dedicatin, thusands f Bareft Cllege graduates and teachers have transfrmed their cmmunities int better places t live.

Fr the perfect cup f tea, des ne add milk t biling water, r the ppsite? Neither, if new research in the jurnal Current Bilgy is t be believed. What must be prepared first, instead, are the micrbes (微生物) .
Scientists are increasingly aware that the fungi and bacteria living arund a plant's rts can significantly affect its grwth by enhancing the absrptin f critical nutrients like irn and nitrgen. This pssibility f enhanced nitrgen absrptin was particularly fascinating t tea experts Xin Wei and Tang Wenxin at Fujian Agriculture and Frestry University in China because tea plants rely upn nitrgen-rich sil arund their rts t prduce theanine, an amin acid that generates their unique pleasant flavrs. Dr. Xin and Dr. Tang fund that theanine prductin varied widely, even amng similar teas. Sme highly valued lng teas such as Rugui, prduced a lt f the chemical, whereas thers, such as Maxie, prduced less. This difference was particularly bvius in the autumn, when the rts were accumulating theanine.
This brught abut a natural questin. If the micrbe cmmunity fund arund Rugui were transplanted t ther tea plants, might this increase their theanine prductin and, in turn, imprve their flavr? T explre this, the researchers created a cmmunity f micrbes made up f 21 bacterial varieties that resembled the cmmunity fund arund Rugui rts and applied them t the rts f Maxie plants. They reprt this week that this nearly tripled the theanine accumulatin in Maxie leaves. While the time-cnsuming prcess f transfrming leaves int drinkable tea has yet t be cmpleted, the researchers have little dubt that there will be big differences.
Flavrs aside, the Rugui micrbe sample that Dr. Xin and Dr. Tang wrked with has the ptential t make a wider envirnmental impact. Mst farmers, nt just tea grwers, add sme frm f nitrgen t their sil t enhance grwth. While sme f this is absrbed by plants, mst runs ff during heavy rains and ends up plluting natural water bdies. When the researchers applied their micrbial ccktail t sil arund the rts f cress (水芹) plants, which is the lab rat f the btanical wrld, they fund that, just as with Maxie, the newcmers enhanced nitrgen uptake. This suggests that these micrbes have the ptential t create new flavrs while als reducing agricultural pllutin. That shuld be everyne's cup f tea.
12. Which f the fllwing directly determines the flavr f tea?
A. Micrbes.B. Theanine.C. Nitrgen.D. Fungi.
13. What was the primary gal f the experiment mentined in Paragraph 3?
A. T determine the effect f micrbes n tea leaf clr.
B. T increase the caffeine cntent in tea leaves.
C. T enhance theanine prductin in Maxie tea plants.
D. T identify new varieties f tea-prducing bacteria.
14. What can we infer abut the future f tea prductin with the use f micrbes?
A. It is very likely t lead t a significant increase in tea prductin csts.
B. It has the ptential t reduce water pllutin caused by farming.
C. It will replace traditinal methds f grwing tea entirely.
D. Its benefits are limited t certain types f tea plants.
15. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. Tea Science: Micrbes Functining
B Micrbes’ Rle: Enhancing Tea Prductin
C. Discvering New Micrbe Varieties in Tea Plants
D. Rethinking the impact f Micrbes n Envirnment
