It was steep (陡峭的) s it was cnsidered a hard hike, but because she had dne it s many times, she wasn’t nervus abut it. She arrived at the trail at arund 11 am and made her way t the lkut. As she headed back dwn, her ft gt caught in a hle in the grund. She fell frward heavily.
By the time she sat up, she fund her ft pinted the wrng way. She knew right away she had brken her leg. With sharp pain, Bannister struggled t shut fr help. Luckily, a stranger apprached befre lng and called 911. The respnse frm the ther end f the phne was rather discuraging - they were tld a prfessinal search and rescue team wuld arrive in five hurs.
The sad stry cntinued. Bannister asked this man if he had painkillers, because at that pint, the pain was pretty bitter. Anther negative reply came t her. Her heart was sinking deep.
At this mment, tw yung men apprached t see what was ging n. Try May, 20, an Air Frce air man statined at Jint Base Lewis-McChrd, had hiked up t the lkut that day with his friend Laytn Allen. When they saw Bannister n the grund in enrmus pain, they knew Bannister needed t be carried dwn withut any further delay. They made an immediate ffer: they culd carry the injured wman t the ft f the hill.

When thunder rumbled verhead, they quickened pace, rain blending with the salt f determinatin n their faces.
Three hurs later, they reached the trail’s end. Paramedics rushed frward with a stretcher, disbelief etching their faces - the rescue team was still tw hurs away. Bannister grasped the yung men’s hands, tears cutting thrugh dirt streaks. “Yu’re my angels,” she whispered harsely. May simply ndded while Allen adjusted her makeshift leg splint. At the hspital, X-rays cnfirmed a cmpund fracture. Mnths later, Bannister std crutch-free at the lkut pint, this time flanked by tw Air Frce servicemen in hiking gear. The tri laughed abut their “adventure,” the muntain nw bearing witness nt t tragedy, but t human resilience frged thrugh selfless curage.
