There’s anther universe nt far frm land. It lacks buildings, trees, cars, cellphnes and the Internet. Seemingly limitless water extends uninterruptedly in all directins. Civilizatin ges away, alng with any sign f humanity. And it is why I’m really int sailing. I grew up arund bats. My father liked sailing and built them. My lder sister and I were stuffed int a car nearly every summer weekend until my late teens t make the trip frm nrtheast Indiana t the suth shre f Lake Erie in Ohi, where Talisman built by my father waited patiently thrugh the week.
As a kid, I read the adventures f Rbin Lee Graham, a traveller explring the sea alne, in the pages f Natinal Gegraphic and, later, in Graham's bk, Dve. Hwever, it wasn't until abut 20 years ag, well int my adulthd, that I tk up sailing in a serius way. I've made vyages in fair strmy and weather, n my wn bats and thse f my friends, and ranging frm nearshre day sails t blue-water passages.
Still, I've made plenty f mistakes. While living in Asia, a sailing friend and I set ff acrss the Suth China Sea and intended t get t Thailand, nly t be pushed by a late-seasn typhn that frced us t make landfall in Vietnam, glad t be alive.
Years later, my wife and I lived abard ur 37-ft ship, Symbisis, while we saved enugh t take a tw-year leave frm ur jbs t jurney dwn the U.S. Atlantic cast and thrugh the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We visited many places that never see ships r airplanes and that are nearly impssible t reach anyway ther than at the helm(舵柄) f a small bat. But bats are expensive and time-cnsuming. After returning frm the Caribbean a few years ag, we decided t sell Symbisis, reslving instead t sail nly “ther peple's bats”. It didn't last, thugh. A few mnths ag, we fund a gd deal n a smaller sailbat—easier t maintain but still capable f sme shrt ffshre jurneys. I think we'll name her Talisman.

We have lng been attracted by quick slutins that culd increase ur intelligence. Tday, peple’s hpes lie in brain training apps, sme f which claim t result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick slutin all it is said t be?
There are plenty f brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic (算術), memry tests and lgic and pattern-matching prblems int quick games. Sme apps tell us that the mre yu play these mini-games, the smarter yu will get. It is really a big prmise.
Many f the apps say they are based n “science”, a claim I fund surprising as a frmer neurscientist (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)科學家). The cncept that increasing intelligence wuld be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every day flies in the face f what we have discvered abut hw humans think and learn.
After surveying thusands f users acrss a wide variety f apps, researchers at Western University in Canada discvered that brain training had n great effect n cgnitive (認知的) functining in the real wrld. The psitive effects that have been fund are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained n, such as the ability t memrize lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrm mental arithmetic, with little benefit t ther skills.
If yu are expecting them t imprve yur ability t write a nvel r make a cmplex cmputer prgram, I am afraid yu will want t lk elsewhere. Puzzle vide games such as “Baba Is Yu” and “Return f the Obra Dinn”, see players apply their skill at lgic, memry and cncentratin in a far mre cmplex way than any brain training mini-game.

10. Which best describes the effects that brain training apps have n memry?
A. Limited.B. Indirect.C. Damaging.D. Far-reaching.
11. What is the authr’s attitude t “Baba Is Yu”?
A. Dubtful.B. Intlerant.C. Uninterested.D. Favrable.

My lder sister and I were stuffed int a car nearly every summer weekend until my late teens t make the trip frm nrtheast Indiana t the suth shre f Lake Erie in Ohi… thrugh the week(我父親喜歡帆船,于是造了它們。
根據(jù)第二段的“As a kid, I read the adventures f Rbin Lee Graham, a traveller explring the sea alne, in the pages f Natinal Gegraphic and, later, in Graham's bk, Dve.( 小時候,我讀過《國家地理》雜志上的羅賓·李·格雷厄姆的冒險故事,他是一位獨自探索海洋的旅行者,后來又讀過格雷厄姆的書《鴿子》。)” 故選A。

8. What des the authr say abut brain training apps?
A. They have scientific supprt.B. They wrk in the frm f games.
C. They require prblem-slving skills.D. They are based n cmplex arithmetic.
9. What des the underlined part “flies in the face f” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Ges int details f.B. Takes advantage f.
C. Ges against.D. Cmes frm.
10. Which best describes the effects that brain training apps have n memry?
A. Limited.B. Indirect.C. Damaging.D. Far-reaching.
11. What is the authr’s attitude t “Baba Is Yu”?
A. Dubtful.B. Intlerant.C. Uninterested.D. Favrable.

根據(jù)第二段中“There are plenty f brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic (算術), memry tests and lgic and pattern-matching prblems int quick games.
根據(jù)第二段中“Sme apps tell us that the mre yu play these mini-games, the smarter yu will get. It is really a big prmise. 結合第四段中“The psitive effects that have been fund are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained n, such as the ability t memrize lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrm mental arithmetic, with little benefit t ther skills. 故可推測短語flies in the face f 意為“與……
根據(jù)第四段“The psitive effects that have been fund are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained n, such as the ability t memrize lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrm mental arithmetic, with little benefit t ther skills. 故選A項。
根據(jù)最后一段中“Puzzle vide games such as “Baba Is Yu” and “Return f the Obra Dinn”, see players apply their skill at lgic, memry and cncentratin in a far mre cmplex way than any brain training mini-game.

根據(jù)文章第二段“T discurage this practice, many vide and live streaming platfrms, including Duyin, Kuaishu and Bilibili, have remved vides that shw fd waste, and have prmted messages t ‘a(chǎn)vid fd waste and eat reasnably’.(為了制止這種做法,抖音、快手、嗶哩嗶哩等許多視頻和直播平臺都刪除了顯示食物浪費的視頻,并宣傳“避免食物浪費,合理飲食”。)
根據(jù)原文倒數(shù)第二段內(nèi)容“In Shaanxi prvince, lcal restaurants have been asked t serve half prtins t avid waste.(在陜西省,當?shù)夭宛^被要求提供一半的份量,以避免浪費。)
綜合全文可知, 文章第二段“T discurage this practice, many vide and live streaming platfrms, including Duyin, Kuaishu and Bilibili, have remved vides that shw fd waste, and have prmted messages t ‘a(chǎn)vid fd waste and eat reasnably’.(為了制止這種做法,抖音、快手、嗶哩嗶哩等許多視頻和直播平臺都刪除了顯示食物浪費的視頻,并宣傳“避免食物浪費,合理飲食”。)以及第四段內(nèi)容“Recently, campaigns against fd waste have been further prmted.(最近,反對食物浪費的運動得到了進一步的推廣。)”

根據(jù)空格后的句子“Hw can yu slve the prblem?
If the bks and seriusness f the library put yu in the md fr fcusing n study, g fr it. If the cmfrtable chairs and cffee at yur lcal café are what yu need t get thrugh yur reading fr English, g there.(找一個讓你想學習的地方。 如果你需要舒適的椅子和當?shù)乜Х瑞^的咖啡來完成你的英語閱讀,那就去那里)”可知,只要能激勵自己學習的地方都可以,所以G項“The mst imprtant thing is that the lcatin mtivates yu t study.
空格前的句子“Set a study schedule. When yu have many subjects t study, it can seem hard t get thrugh everything. Give yurself a schedule where yu set specific times t study particular subjects.(制定學習計劃。
空格處是該部分的主題句,根據(jù)下文“If yu find yurself distracted frm studying by thughts abut smething else, spend 5 minutes thinking abut them, but then tell yurself studying is yur main task nw. If yu are tired f study, step away frm it. A shrt break helps refresh yu s that yu can stay fcused when yu cme back t studying.(如果你發(fā)現(xiàn)自己被其他事情分散了學習的注意力,那就花5分鐘想一下,然后告訴自己學習是你現(xiàn)在的主要任務。 故選A項。
空格前的句子“Texting, scial media, calls and ther distractins that cme frm yur electrnic devices are sme f the biggest barriers t staying fcused when yu are studying.(短信、社交媒體、電話和其他來自電子設備的干擾是你學習時保持專注的最大障礙)”說的是電子設備對學習的干擾,而空格后的句子“Turn ff the distracting electrnic devices!(關掉讓人分心的電子設備!)”
