Suddenly, his vice rse with urgency, “Carl, stp! A car is turning.”
When we reached ur destinatin, my shulders ached frm the ride. As I sat next t Uncle Fred, he cleared

neighbrhd rutes. This skill culd be an advantage when wrking with a dg.
After calculating, I finally called the guide dg schl. The admissin applicatin arrived, but I still wasn’t
sure. One day, I phned my friend Rbert, a lngtime guide dg user in my twn. He shared his psitive

In surveys ver the past cuple f years, Gallup researchers have fund nly abut a third f U. S. wrkers
feel engaged with their jbs. It’s a cncern fr cmpanies and the ecnmy. Frtunately, researchers have identified
a simple slutin: Recgnize yur emplyees’ achievements.
Acrss a number f industries, emplyees having high-quality recgnitin n the jb were 45% less likely t
have left that jb between 2022 and 2024. “Imagine hw demralizing it wuld be if yu’re ding things at wrk
that nbdy sees and yu feel like nbdy cares abut,’’ says Martin, senir directr at Wrkhuman, which tracked
the career paths f mre than 3,400 wrkers ver tw years.
When it cmes t recgnitin, peple feel less lnely when their cntributins are praised, which in turn keeps
them frm seeking wrk elsewhere. The survey asked respndents if they felt stressed the previus day. Thse wh
said they felt recgnized n the jb reprted lwer levels f stress than thse wh said they were nt.
Anther finding emerging frm the surveys is that high-quality feedback can fuel prfessinal develpment.
That was Andy Hernandez’s experience. He was wrking in car financing in Greenville, trying t figure ut hw t
get ahead, when he decided t learn Excel t use it at wrk. He began pitching ideas using his newly acquired
skills. Managers liked what he was ding and tld him as much. “It mtivates me t knw that all this extra stuff
I’m ding gets recgnized; it’s als helping me shw that I, m ready fr the next step,” he says. He rse thrugh the
ranks, eventually becming a team leader. He says he lked fr pprtunities t shw appreciatin fr his team.
There are generatinal differences when it cmes t the desire fr feedback, Gallup fund in 2024. Yunger
wrkers, wh feel less attached t their wrkplaces than their parents, have a higher expectatin f appreciatin.
Frtunately fr them, cmpany leaders are als increasingly recgnizing the imprtance f praise in the wrkplace.
In 2024, Wrkhuman fund 42% f senir leaders reprting their rganizatins value emplyee recgnitin, up
frm 28% in 2022.
8

A. They give psitive wrk feedback.
B. They desire high incme fr their wrk.
C. They feel less devted t their wrk.
D. They’re cncerned abut U. S. ecnmy.
9
. What des the underlined wrd “demralizing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Discuraging. B. Inspiring. C. Misleading.
0. What benefit did learning Excel bring t Andy?
A. It made him judge his team in a psitive way. B. He welcmed each suggestin bjectively.
C. It enabled him t be put in charge f a firm. D. He was recgnized and mtivated t g n.
D. Entertaining.

1. What did Gallup find abut generatinal differences?
A. Yung leaders are less likely t praise their wrkers.
B. Yung wrkers have high expectatins t be recgnized.
C. Senir leaders care little abut wrkplace recgnitin.

A revlutin in weather frecasting culd sn see warnings f cming heatwaves, strms r ther extreme
events accmpanied by specific infrmatin n the rle climate change has played in fuelling them. The shift wuld
help bring the reality f ur warming planet t the general public.
Key t this idea is the grwing field f attributin science (歸因科學(xué)), which invlves examining extreme
weather events after the fact t detail the impact f climate change. It invlves simulating an event twice, under
real-wrld cnditins and in a fictinal wrld with n human-caused climate change. The difference between thse
tw situatins reveals the extent t which rising emissins (排放) made matters wrse. Nw, researchers want t g
further and apply attributin science t events befre they even happen.
At the UK weather service, the Met Office, Peter Sttt and his clleagues are ding this with weather
frecasting mdels, cmparing real-wrld frecasts with nes based n a fictinal wrld unaffected by human
influence. The gal is t prvide the public with weather and climate infrmatin at the same time. “S, the frecast
shws hw the weather infrmatin relates t climate change, and the impacts it will mean fr them lcally.”
Bernat at the Institute f GeSciences in Spain has experimented with a different apprach, using artificial
intelligence-pwered weather frecasts. Tgether with clleagues, he ran the AI-enabled apprach n three past
extreme events: the 2018 Iberian heatwave, Hurricane Flrence in the US in 2018, and Strm Ciaran in the UK and
ther parts f nrthern Eurpe in 2023. The AI mdels crrectly predicted that all three extreme events wuld
ccur, but underestimated their size. Bemat says the AI apprach is currently mst accurate when cnsidering
heatwaves but mre limited fr cmplex systems such as a trpical strm.
But Bernat says AI weather frecasts are rapidly imprving. He says this AI-based apprach wuld allw
attributin analysis t be much mre widely used, helping t expand peple’s understanding f hw extreme events
are changing.
1
2. What will be added t weather frecasting after the revlutin?
A. The damage extreme weather events cause t the envirnment.
B. Effective measures in preventing extreme weather events.
C. The effect f climate change n extreme weather events.
D. Specific ways fr the public t fight against climate change.
1
3. What’s the purpse f the wrk f Peter’s team?
A. T build a mdel t prduce climate infrmatin.
B. T cnnect lcal weather with climate change.
C. T predict the degree f lcal carbn emissins.
D. T apply AI t the predictin f extreme events.
1
4. What is Bernat’s attitude tward AI weather frecasts?

A. Unclear.
B. Dismissive.
C. Dubtful.
D. Apprving.

5. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Climate Infrmatin Is Added t Weather Frecasts
