When she was yung, Sylvia Clt-Lacay nticed she was particularly fascinated with n-
screen stries. Media ffered an escape when life was hard.
Watching Glee, she was thrilled t see a character wh used a wheelchair like her — until she
learned the rle was played by an actr wh was nt disabled. “I remember feeling s heartbrken and
betrayed (背叛), fr n reasn ther than the fact that I felt seen fr nce as a 10-year-ld watching
Glee, and the pwer f that,” says Clt-Lacay.
Nw, Clt-Lacay is graduating frm Stanfrd with a degree in film and media studies and is
heading t Hllywd with a passin fr increasing disability representatin and diversity in general.
“Representatin matters, and I als think that diverse strytelling is what is mst cmpelling (令人信

Representatin shaped Clt-Lacay’s path t Stanfrd. As a disabled Latina girl, she struggled t
imagine ging t cllege, in part because she never saw adult wheelchair users in the media. In high
schl, she met anther Stanfrd student wh was als a wheelchair user at a cnference. Suddenly, a
new stry felt pssible.
When she arrived at Stanfrd, Clt-Lacay knew she was ften the first visibly disabled student
her prfessrs and peers had interacted with. Her parents had taught her t advcate fr herself, and
while she desn’t claim the label “activist”, she asks fr what she needs.
“Yes, there’s smething that is in my DNA that makes my bdy different frm ther peple’s.
But really, what makes me disabled is that peple treat me differently, and I d nt have equal access
t resurces,” she said.
She brught this perspective t her Stanfrd experience. Fr her senir thesis (論文), she wrte a
screenplay examining hw grwing up with a disability impacts ne’s relatinship with neself and
ne’s understanding f the wrld.
Clt-Lacay aims t becme an agent fr screenwriters and film directrs. She hpes that

D yu have a brain fr math? New research indicates that levels f tw key neurtransmitters
( 腦 神 經(jīng) 傳 遞 素 ) —— glutamate ( 谷 氨 酸 ) and gamma-aminbutyric acid (GABA)can predict
mathematical abilities, suggesting brain chemistry may be playing a rle in thse wh find math easy.
The new study, published in the jurnal PLOS Bilgy, recruited 255 subjects extending a range
f six-year lds in primary schl t university students. The research fcused n glutamate and
GABA, knwn t play a rle in brain plasticity (可塑性) and learning. Based n prir research, the
fcus was n tw brain regins linked with mathematical abilities —— the left intraparietal sulcus
(IPS 頂葉內(nèi)溝) and the left middle frntal gyrus (MFG 腦額中回).
The results were interestingly different. In the yungest subjects high GABA levels and lw
glutamate levels in the left IPS were cnsistently assciated with high math skills. But in the lder
university grup the exact ppsite was seen: lw GABA and high glutamate were linked with strng
mathematical abilities. Levels f bth neurtransmitters in the MFG did nt assciate with math skills.
The grup was tested twice ver 18 mnths, allwing the researchers t see if these
neurtransmitter levels culd predict mathematical ability int the future. And it wrked, with
neurtransmitter levels effectively predicting ne’s success n math tests cmpleted a year and a half
later.
Anther recent study frm the same research team lked specifically at GABA levels in MFG f

Standing stne circles seem t have sprung up arund 5,800 t 5,500 B. C. This cincided with a
warmer climate in the regin that brught mre regular rainfall and a landscape f rich grasses and trees,

structures. Mre abundant vegetatin meant less pressure t keep mving the animals t fresh
grasslands, which made building hmes mre wrthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance f stnes,
may have encuraged the nmads t stay a while and build.
Excavatins f these settlements are revealing smething f this peple’s way f life. They kept
cattle and gats fr meat but cntinued t hunt and gather t expand their diet with hare, fruits and nuts.
The many grinding(磨碎) stnes fund n the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding grains,
but these were likely t be gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have als revealed tls made

32. What did the 2019 excavatin finally identify the “standing stne circles” as?
A. Religius sites. B. Dmestic buildings.
C. Rubbish statins. D. Natural wnders.
33. What was a cntributing factr in the building f the standing stne circles?
A. The need t stre gds. B. The wrsening climate.

Dear Jasper,
I’m really glad yu liked my 3-minute Science Speech. Yu asked abut the challenges in
bidiversity research in yur email, and here’s what I’ve gt t say.
There are tns f challenges fr a senir high like me t cnduct bidiversity research! When I was
catalging the scientific names and grwth cycles f the plants in Wenzhu Sanyang Wetland Park, I
had truble identifying sme unfamiliar plant varieties. S, I did extensive rescarch using nline
databases. Yu knw what? I fund a website that allwed users t uplad images fr prfessinal
identificatin f varius plants. My bilgy teacher was a huge help as well. She even intrduced a
prfessinal btanist t me.
These challenges didn’t stp me. Instead, they made me mre determined. After all, that’s what
science is all abut. S, keep that curisity abut science alive, Jasper, and dn’t hesitate t reach ut if
needed.(147 詞)

n the day’s events, feeling a sense f cnnectin t their cmmunity that they had never experienced
