The afternn air was thick and warm, and by the time my dad and I reached the bay, which we called a swimming palace, my clthes were damp and itchy n my skin. Dad dived int a splash, heading ut tward the edge f ur narrw bay. Overwhelmed, suddenly, with envy, I did what I hadn’t dne in years: I held my breath and pulled my wn head underwater.
There, suspended beneath the glimmering(閃著微光) surface, I remembered it all—my lve f diving, swimming, rivers and lakes. I knew what it was like again: t be free and fully present in my wn skin.
Thugh I’ve always lved the water, I had spent seven years prir t that day staying away frm mments like this ne. I was afraid. Struggling fr a lng time with unhelpful treatments, and the pressures f teenage girls’ appearance, I had becme entirely reliant n my makeup. I needed ttal cntrl ver hw I lked, and ging swimming meant washing this cntrl away. My bare face and natural appearance were nt smething I identified with. I hated it, deeply, thugh I wished mre than anything that I didn’t.
But thse 10 minutes f cntentment I flated within were fuel fr the next chapter f my life. Suddenly, it didn’t matter hw I did it. Whether thrugh medicatin r mental attitude, I wuld find a way t have the kind f life that allwed me t dive int the water.
That day was the beginning f a slw but determined jurney back t my wn bdy—a slw unlearning f my deep self-cnsciusness. Life didn’t change in a heartbeat: I returned t the shre with all the same fears, but I clthed myself in a new determinatin t change things. I felt the tide turn.
Reflecting n this mment again tday, it seems strange t think that ging bare-faced n an empty beach was such a challenge. But this is exactly the perspective I had nce dreamed f reaching. I d my best never t take fr granted this freedm I have fund. I will sink under the surface f the water, embracing that swell f fear and jy and liberatin.

Teen brains aged faster than nrmal frm stress by at least three years, a study has fund. The study, published in Bilgical Psychiatry: Glbal Open Science, was the first t cmpare examinatins f the physical structures f teenagers’ brains frm befre and after the stress started, and t dcument significant differences.
Researchers knew teens had higher levels f depressin, anxiety and fearfulness than befre the stress. But we knew nthing abut the effects n their brains. The researchers fund grwth in brain areas that cntrl access t sme memries and help cntrl fear, stress and ther emtins.
Premature(過早的) aging f kids’ brains isn’t a psitive develpment. Their stressful childhd experiences nt nly make peple easier t suffer frm depressin, anxiety and ther mental illnesses, but they can raise the risk f cancer, heart disease and ther lng-term negative utcmes.
The scientists tried t make ut hw the stress itself may have impacted the physical structure f the children’s brains and their mental health. They matched pairs f children with the same age, gender and stress. “That allwed us t cmpare 16-year-lds befre the stress with different 16-year-lds assessed after the stress,” said Ian Gtlib, a psychlgy prfessr at Stanfrd University.
T determine the brain age f their samples, the researchers fed their brain examinatins int a machine-learning mdel fr predicting brain age develped by the ENIGMA-Brain Age wrking grup, a c-peratin amng scientists wh share their brain image data sets. They als appraised mental health utcmes reprted by the matched pairs. They fund mre severe symptms f anxiety, depressin and internalizing(內(nèi)在化的) prblems in the grup that had experienced the stress.

As smene clsely invlved in the fashin tech industry, I’ve watched the grwth f the Chinese shrt drama frm its early days. Chinese shrt dramas-als knwn as “vertical shrts” r “mini TV series”—are becming mre ppular in the glbal market. By the end f February 2024, the US emerged as a key market fr these dramas. Accrding t Sensr Twer, a mbile applicatin data analysis cmpany, Chinese platfrms like ReelShrt, DramaBx and GdShrt generated 69, 57 and 66 percent f their ttal earnings frm the US market, respectively.
Despite their market ptential, Chinese shrt dramas still face challenges in glbal expansin, including cultural differences and language barriers. Here are sme strategies I believe culd help them succeed in Western markets.
First, they need t lcalize their cntent mre effectively. This means wrking with native speakers and prfessinals frm the target cuntry. I’ve encuntered many translated scripts(劇本) that lack natural expressins and lgical flw, ften the result f machine translatin. Additinally, since mst Chinese shrt dramas are aimed at wmen, it’s essential t invlve mre wmen writers, directrs and prducers. With a grwing audience f wmen ver 35, it’s imprtant t shw wmen in leadership rles and tell stries that reflect their real-life experiences and ambitins, aviding cliched(老套的)Cinderella-style rescue stries.
Shrt dramas can als attract mre yung audiences by partnering with fashin and lifestyle brands. Cmpared t traditinal films that rely n ticket sales and prduct placement, Chinese shrt dramas use a pay-t-view mdel, allwing investrs t see significant returns. I’ve nticed that verseas audiences are ften willing t spend $40—100 (abut 292—730 yuan) t watch high-quality series n their mbile devices. These platfrms serve peple wh enjy watching cntent during daily travel r in their free time. With yunger generatins using scial media mre fr entertainment, this trend is likely t grw, making shrt dramas a smart and lng-term investment.
I als believe AI will play a crucial rle in expanding shrt drama stry ideas. AI can assist with pre-prductin, planning and scheduling, which is especially valuable fr lw-budget prjects. Generative AI can create backgrunds, impressive wide-angle scenes with crwds and special effects, starting a new era f digital cntent creatin that crsses brders.
While challenges remain, they als present pprtunities fr investrs seeking high returns. By strengthening internatinal cllabratin (合作), prmting cultural exchange and using up AI technlgy t cme up with new kinds f stries, I believe Chinese shrt dramas can succeed in verseas markets.
51.What challenge d Chinese shrt dramas face in glbal markets?
A.High prductin expenses.B.Culture and language barriers.
C.Outdated marketing strategies.D.Limited interest in their cntent.
52.Why des the authr emphasize the invlvement f wmen creatrs in shrt dramas?
A.T attract new age grups.B.T ensure diverse strytelling.
C.T meet the target audience’s needs.D.T balance the gender rati f creatrs.
53.Hw d shrt dramas prfit differently frm traditinal films?
A.By selling branded merchandise.B.By charging a pay-t-view fee.
C.By partnering with fashin brands.D.By relying n mbile advertisements.
54.Accrding t the authr, what rle des AI play in shrt drama prductin?
A.Imprving script translatins.B.Adding mre entertainment elements.
C.Designing characters and cstumes.D.Enhancing stry creatin and special effects.
55.Which is the best title f the passage?
A.Strategies fr Shrt Drama t succeed in Western Markets
B.Rise f Chinese Shrt Dramas in the Western markets
C.AI: Key t Shrt Drama’s Success in Freign Markets
D.Shrt Dramas: Glbal Achievements & Obstacles

Nt lng ag, my 12-year-ld sn, Lucian, and I were standing n the knife’s edge. I mean this quite literally. We had just cmpleted a fur-day hike in Maine that cncluded by climbing Munt Katahdin. “What’s yur favrite vide game?” I asked my sn. He sht me a cnfused lk. I pressed him, asking him again. When we returned hme, Lucian and I bth recunted ur adventure—t my wife, his brther, and all the grandparents—until it quickly became a family tale. And it ccurred t me that n sme level, Lucian and I are bth fnd f explring curageusly. And this is hw we fund urselves at the tp f Munt Katahdin, crssing ver the Knife Edge.
