My intentin had been t park myself 300 meters frm the finish line t cheer my sn n in the final stretch f the crss-cuntry race. As he passed by me, I fund his little face bright red, and his breathing labred. He kept running with all his might, thugh. Seeing this, I suddenly fund myself running, t. Calmer, mre mtinless parents f his third-grade classmates fell by the wayside. Old wrds f supprt like “yu gt this, buddy!” and “push, push, push!” shuted ut f my muth as I chased him t the end f the race.
Grwing up, I wasn’t interested in sprts. Then I had children. And they were interested in all sprts. Initially, watching them play sprts was nly amusing briefly. As they began cmpeting, it became enjyable. It kept happening. Watching a Grade 6 girls’ tuch ftball game, I wndered why I felt s nervus and excited. I was genuinely disappinted by mistakes and cared deeply abut winning. It was as if I was unrecgnizable t myself. I realized that I shuld have their curage - nt just in sprts but in life. Dn’t hesitate t take up space. Charge frward with determinatin and pursue yur gals.
I tried ut my new identity as a cmpetitive athlete first against my eight-year-ld sn during a ball hckey game. I gave him a bit f shulder t the sternum (胸骨). I used my size advantage t stickhandle the ball ut f his reach. After I scred, I yelled, “Yes!” Immediately ashamed, I aplgized. He lked at me inquiringly and said, “That’s hw yu shuld always play, mama.” I realized that maybe it’s nt much fun t play against smene wh isn’t trying their hardest.
The paths my kids take in life will lead them t fields f endeavr (努力) where their successes and failures are less public than n a sprts field. I might nt be running beside them shuting wrds f encuragement. But, perhaps, they will still hear my vice, telling them they are strng and can d hard things, and they’ll knw that I will always be cheering them n.

Crals (珊瑚) vary in shape, size, and clr, building shelters t prtect cean bidiversity. Mst f the ver 6,000 knwn cral species are immbile as adults. Hwever, there are lnely mushrm crals, sme f which can walk.
Ocean eclgist Brett Lewis calls them “very little” and “adrable.” He experimented with inch-lng mushrm crals. One side f the fish tank had white light like in shallw castal areas, and the ther had blue light like in deeper cean parts. In three trials, the mushrm crals preferred the blue light, mving twards it.
As fr hw a mushrm cral actually mves, Dr. Lewis’s research shwed that the mechanics are surprisingly similar t the way ne f cral’s clsest cusins, the jellyfish, gets arund. “Jellyfish can mve thrugh water by turning and cntracting muscles in and arund the edges f that bell shape as it mves quickly,” he said. With bdies shaped similarly t the bell f a jellyfish, the mushrm crals spend a lng time filling gas int the tissues n the utermst edge f their bdies befre releasing it quickly. “And that allws the crals t kind f pp themselves frward, jumping acrss the rck,” he said.
The crals frequently begin their lives living in grups. But these habitats tend t be crwded and hit by waves. Later in life, the mushrm crals need t migrate (遷徙) t deeper but calmer waters, where they can establish themselves n a sandy bttm with thers f their kind. This als assists the animals in reprductin. Migratin “may help them t escape unfavrable situatins, such as being buried underneath a layer f sand, being pulled ver r being t clse t cmpetitrs fr space,” said Dr. Heksema, anther cean eclgist.
A mushrm cral’s mvement may seem unimprtant when cnsidered against the distances traveled by ther migrating creatures. But such slw mvement has served the species well fr hundreds f millins f years. “They’re s little that this is such a large mvement fr their size,” Dr. Lewis said. “They’re mving their bdy length in such a shrt time, with such a simple system. That’s a race fr them.”
8. Hw d mushrm crals mve in similar ways with jellyfish?
A. Using water currents fr energy.B. Mving with the help f edge tissues.
C. Expanding bdy tissues suddenly.D. Turning their bdy t mve frward.
9. Why d mushrm crals migrate?
A. T search fr seasnal fd surces.B. T keep away frm varius threats.
C. T fllw the cycle f reprductin.D. T seek warmer water temperatures.
10. Why des Dr. Lewis describe the mvement f mushrm crals as a “race”?
A. It is a shrt distance fr their size.B. It can be perfrmed at different speeds.
C. It is a fast mvement fr them.D. It is a rare and cmpetitive behavir.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. These Crals Have Unusual Features
B. The Crals Live in Grups Underwater
C. The Mushrm Crals Survive in Deep Waters
D. The Mushrm Crals Are Made fr Walking

The rapid spread f AI has peple wndering: Wh’s mst likely t embrace (接受) AI in their daily lives? Many assume it’s thse wh understand hw AI wrks are mst eager t adpt it. Surprisingly, ur new research finds the ppsite. Peple with less knwledge abut AI are actually mre pen t using the technlgy. We call this difference in adptin tendency the “l(fā)wer literacy-higher receptivity” link.
AI nw perfrms tasks we nce thught nly humans culd d. When AI creates a piece f art, writes a heartfelt respnse, r plays a musical instrument, it can feel almst magical — like it’s crssing int human territry. Of curse, AI desn’t actually pssess human qualities. A chatbt might generate an empathetic (同感的) respnse, but it desn’t feel empathy. Peple with mre technical knwledge abut AI understand this. They knw hw algrithms (算法), training data, and cmputatinal mdels perate. This makes the technlgy less magical. On the ther hand, thse with less understanding may see AI as magical and awe-inspiring. We suggest this sense f magic makes them mre pen t using AI tls.
Our studies shw this link is strngest fr using AI tls in areas where peple assciate with human characteristics, like prviding emtinal supprt r cunseling. When it cmes t tasks that dn’t cause the same sense f humanlike qualities — such as analyzing test results — the pattern flips. Peple with higher AI literacy are mre receptive t these uses because they fcus n AI’s efficiency, rather than any “magical” qualities.
Effrts t bst AI literacy might unintentinally dampen peple’s enthusiasm fr using AI by making it seem less magical. This creates a tricky balance between helping peple understand AI and keeping them pen t its adptin. T make the mst f AI’s ptential, businesses, educatrs and plicymakers need t strike this balance. By understanding hw perceptins f “magicalness” shape peple’s penness t AI, we can help develp new AI-based prducts and services that take the way peple view AI int accunt, and help them understand the benefits and risks f AI.
And ideally, this will happen withut causing a lss f the admiratin that inspires many peple t embrace this new technlgy.
12. Why are less-infrmed peple mre pen t AI?
A. They trust its mral standards.B. They admire the ability f AI.
C. They believe in its superir efficiency.D. They prefer its technical cmplexity.
13. What des the underlined wrd “flips” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Breaks dwn.B. Takes shape.C. Shws up.D. Turns ver.
14. What is the tricky situatin regarding AI literacy?
A. Balancing mrals and capability.B. Reducing fear while ensuring safety.
C. Familiarizing withut lsing wnder.D. Priritizing efficiency ver magic.
15. What is the authr’s attitude twards using AI?
A. Objective.B. Wrried.C. Skeptical.D. Dismissive.

I live in Samburu, in nrthern Kenya. Where I grew up, there were elephants living in the wild. I was attracted by these creatures. They’re s scial, cmplex and sympathetic; their size is breathtaking.

In May 2019, in the middle f the wet seasn, Rmmel appeared again. And it was his turn t be cllared. We sent three cars ut t search fr him.
There’s a river, the Ewas Nyir, running thrugh the park where many elephants meet in the mrnings. At 10:30 a. m., searching the grups arund the river, Jhn clcked Rmmel, with a big cut n his right ear.
Rmmel was darted (用飛鏢射) a drug fr him t sleep. Nrmally it takes seven minutes fr the drug t hit, but fr Rmmel’s size it can take lnger.
When the dart hit him, he turned away, heading in an unexpected directin. Rmmel started shaking. He was in the middle f crssing the river when the drug hit. He cllapsed int the water.
I jumped ut f my vehicle: Rmmel drwning wuld be a disaster. Only by lifting his trunk and stpping it frm being sunken in the river culd we ensure his survival. The prblem was the current f the river was fast flwing and unpredictable, and the river was filled with crcdiles (鱷魚)。
