I used t believe that nly wrds culd catch the essence(本質(zhì)) f the human sul. The literary wrks cntained such distinct stries that they shaped the way we saw the wrld. Wrds were what cmpsed the questins we sught t uncver and the answers t thse questins themselves. Wrds were everything.
That belief changed.
In an rdinary math class, my teacher psed a simple questin: What's 0. 99 runded t the nearest whle number? Easy. When runded t the nearest whle number, 0. 99=1. Smehw, I thught even thugh 0. 99 is nly 0. 01 away frm 1, there's still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if tw things are nly a little different, they are still different, s desn't that make them cmpletely different?
My teacher answered my questin by presenting anther equatin(等式): 1= 0. 9, which culd als be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself withut ever ending.
There was smething mysterius but attractive abut the equatin. The left side was unchangeable, bjective: it cntained a number that ended. On the right was smething endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, smehw, these tw ppsed things were cnnected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thught abut hw much the equatin paralleled ur existence. The left side f the equatin represents that smetimes life itself is s unchangeable and s clear. The cncrete, whle number f the day when yu were brn and the day when yu wuld die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full f limitless pssibilities, and endless pprtunities int the pen future.
S that's what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equatin with tw sides that balances itself ut. Still, we can't ever truly seem t put the perfect wrds t it. S pssibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as wrds can. Fr nw, let's leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999… and live a life like it.
24. What des the authr emphasize abut wrds in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary rigins.
C. Their different sunds. D. Their expressive pwer.
25. What made the authr find the equatin attractive?

C. The questin the teacher raised. D. The way tw different numbers are equal.
26. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Mirrred. C. Cmpsed. D. Influenced.
27. What is a suitable title fr the text?

C. An Attractive Questin. D. Wrds Outperfrm Numbers.

The United Kingdm is hsting the AI Safety Summit, bringing pliticians, cmputer scientists and big AI cmpany leaders t a site chsen fr its symblism: Bletchley Park, the birthplace f cmputing and cde- breaking(密碼破譯).
During Wrld War II, a grup f mathematicians, chess masters and ther experts gathered at the Victrian cuntry huse 72 kilmeters nrthwest f Lndn t start a secret war against Nazi Germany. Their gal was t break a set f cnstantly changing cdes prduced by Nazi Germany's Enigma machine. T d it, Bletchley Park's wartime scientists—building n wrk dne by Plish cde- breakers—develped Clssus, the first prgrammable digital cmputer. Sme histrians say cracking the cde helped shrten the war by up t tw years.
“It has versimpli fied its true cntributin by describing Bletchley Park as a playgrund fr Turing and ther scientists. ” said histrian Chris Smith, authr f The Hidden Histry f Bletchley Park. “Althugh it fits int the rmantic idea that a grup f smart men with a bit f wl and sme yards f wire can win the war. In fact, almst 10, 000 peple wrked at Bletchley Park during the war. Three quarters f them were wmen. It's basically a factry. . . Twenty- fur hurs a day, seven days a week. When peace came, the cde- breakers returned t civilian life and prmised t keep secret abut their wartime wrk. It was nt until the 1970s that the wrk at Bletchley Park became widely knwn in Britain. ”
In 1994, the site pened as a museum, after lcal histrians banded tgether t prevent it frm being pulled dwn t build a supermarket. It was restred t its 1940s appearance, cmplete with ld typewriters, phnes and cups—including the ne tied t a heater in Hut 8, where Turing led the Enigma team.

C. T shw the significance f an imprtant meeting.
D. T add sme backgrund t the AI safety meeting.

Lking up at the sky during early spring, yu may see grups f birds mving as they migrate (遷徙) nrth. But hw d these creatures fly in such a cperative and seemingly effrtless fashin?
“The answer lies in aerdynamics(空氣動力學),” reprts a team f scientists frm New Yrk University(NYU) in a newly published study. They als fund that the impact f aerdynamics depends n the size f the flying grup—benefiting small grups and disturbing large nes.
T mimic(模仿) the flying patterns f birds in which they line up ne directly behind the ther, the researchers created mechanized(機械化的) wings. They were 3D- printed frm plastic and driven by mtrs t mve in water, which shwed hw air flws arund bird wings and hw they interact during flight. Fr smaller grups, the researchers discvered an effect by which each member gets help frm the aerdynamics in hlding its psitin relative t its neighbrs. Fr larger grups, hwever, these flying interactins cause later members t be thrwn ut f psitin, causing a breakdwn f the flying patterns due t crashes amng members.
The researchers then used mathematical mdeling t better understand the underlying frces. It indicates that the interactins between neighbrs are spring- like frces. Hwever, these “springs” act in nly ne directin—a lead bird can apply frce n its fllwers, but nt the ther way arund. “The spring- like frces mve the members back and frth and then travel dwn the grup and increase in intensity, causing later members t crash tgether, explains Leif Ristrph, an assciate prfessr at New Yrk University.
“This area f research is imprtant since animals are knwn t take advantage f the flws t save n the energy r t reduce drag r resistance, ” explains Leif Ristrph. “ Our wrk may als have applicatins in transprtatin—like efficient speeding thrugh air r water—and energy, such as mre effectively harvesting pwer frm wind r waves. ”
32. What is the majr fcus f the NYU researchers' study n birds?
A. The migratin patterns f birds. B. The aerdynamic effects n bird grups.
C. The benefits f smaller bird gruping. D. The flying rutes in early spring.
33. Hw d flying interactins affect smaller grups f birds?
A. They lead t a breakdwn. B. They disturb the frmatin.
C. They help each member in psitin. D. They cause crashes amng members.
34. Why des the authr mentin “springs” in paragraph 4?
A. T make a cntrast. B. T present new evidence.
C. T put frward a thery. D. T explain a principle.
35. Accrding t Leif Ristrph, what might be a ptential applicatin f this research?
A. Relieving public traffic jams. B. Imprving harvest f slar energy.
C. Changing migratin rutes f birds. D. Decreasing air resistance f planes.

M: Challenging, but I'm enjying it. Hw abut yu?
W: I started learning singing skills. I entered the singing cntest next mnth.
M: Great! Maybe I can accmpany yu n the guitar.
(Text 6)
M: Alice, did yu see the new wrkshp curses at the cmmunity center? They're ffering a series f curses.
W: Oh, what kind f things are they ding?
M: They're ffering multiple ptins n tp f the usual fitness curse, such as a six- week prgramming curse and an eight- week creative writing curse.
W: Great! I'm interested in creative expressin thrugh written wrk. Are they beginning n September 15th as usual?
M: N, they're giving the first class ten days later. And the deadline fr registratin is Octber 1st.
(Text 7)
M: That's a beautiful painting! Wh's the artist?
W: It's by Alana Mreau, an up- and- cming artist frm France. She's knwn fr her abstract landscapes. 1 came acrss her wrk at an art gallery.
M: Hw des she create these effects?
W: Alana uses a mix f il paints and waterclrs. She applies multiple layers f clrs and then emplys a clth patting technique. I've read she's inspired by nature and emtins.
M: It lks expensive . . .
W: Actually, this is a cpy! She sells riginal wrks, but they g ver my budget. The cpy is still remarkably breathtaking, thugh.
(Text 8)
M: Sally, I can't believe yu finally left the cmpany. What are yur plans nw?
W: I'm thinking abut selling handmade candles.
M: Sunds like a great idea! In the market, the dealers sell plenty f candles, except fr handmade nes.
W: I'm planning t set up a website t prmte them. I'll use ec- friendly and natural materials t stand ut.
M: Gd plan. Maybe yu can als ffer tailr- made candles? That culd attract mre custmers.
W: That's exactly what I've been thinking. I can create special editins fr glbal hlidays r events. I'll need t research mre n packaging, because my current system isn't the mst advanced technlgically.
M: Dn't frget abut things like shipping and handling. Maybe start lcally, then expand as yu grw and maybe yu'll be able t wrk with sme glbal partners in the future.
W: Yes, that's sensible. Using bigger cmpanies when expanding seems like the way t g.
(Text 9)
W: Oh. I've finally finished grading all the papers! What a term! What are yur plans fr next term, Paul?
M: Yu're right, Sarah. This term was tugh. Thse English essays f my students were a Shakespearean tragedy. Next term, I'm thinking abut mre hands- n activities. maybe sme field trips. I think they will leave the students with a strnger impressin than lectures.
W: Sunds like a gd strategy. I'm cnsidering adding mre technlgy int my math lessns.
M: Ww, yu have a talent fr bringing fresh ideas t the table. Maybe yu culd even lead a tech initiative in educatinal methds.
W: Nw, that's an exciting thught! It's abut explring new ways t imprve student perfrmance.
M: Definitely. It's abut keeping the students engaged and making the subject matter mre understandable. We shuld cperate in sme f these ideas, and see where it takes us.
W: Agreed. Let's brainstrm and see hw we can cmbine these cncepts.
(Text 10)
M: Gd afternn, everyne, I'm Jhn and I'm glad t be here tday. I started playing glf abut 18 years ag—when I was 12, thugh I didn't really take it seriusly until fur years later. My Dad was crazy abut glf. He'd always watch the internatinal cmpetitins n TV and he'd ask me t watch them with him. Lking back, when I tld my teachers that I wanted t becme a prfessinal glfer, they all tried t put me ff. I wish they’d given me supprt. That wasn't particularly surprising, I suppse, especially a few years ag—everyne thught glf was just a game fr the rich while my parents were just blue- cllar wrkers. I think it's a little different tday, but nt much. Fr example, I think the gvernment shuld d smething fr yung peple wh play glf, like allwing them t hire gd quality equipment at a reasnable price. Having said that, what really seems t be making a difference amng yunger peple is the huge success f sme yung British players these days. I'm in this sprt because I like it and I can make a reasnable incme frm it. It hasn't made me enrmusly wealthy, but it's given me huge enjyment ver the years.
