Radkill is a cmmn sight t highways and smetimes in cities. It refers t animals being hit by vehicles (車輛). A study in 2023 measured, fr the first time, the damage China’s fast-develping rad netwrk is having n animals in urban (城市的) areas.
Previusly, research in China had fcused n radkill in nature reserves. Li Zhngqiu and his team frm Nanjing University’s Schl f Life Sciences lked at the prblem in cities, where radkill culd have an even larger impact.
They chse Nanjing, with ver 9,700 kilmeters f paved (鋪好) rads, as the study subject. Nine rads, including three natinal highways, ttaling ver 224 kilmeters, were watched every tw weeks fr a year.
The team recrded a ttal f 249 individual (單獨的) radkill cases. Birds accunted fr nearly half the ttal, making them the mst susceptible grup t radkill. Cats, dgs and blackbirds were the three mst cmmnly killed animals.
“This may be due t the large number f stray (流浪的) cats and dgs in urban area,” Li said. “Abandned (被拋棄的) pets are mre likely t wander int traffic.” Als, there are many blackbirds in East China that are attracted nt rads by insects like flies, leading t mre accidents.
