The fastest-mving wildfires are by far the mst destructive (破壞性的) because they frce firefighters t fcus n saving lives, instead f saving prperty. Nw, researchers have wrse news: Wildfires are grwing faster with climate change.
That’s accrding t a new analysis that used satellite data t examine tens f thusands f wildfires between 2001 and 2020. The researchers fund that the fastest-mving fires were respnsible fr nearly 90 percent f damaged and destryed hmes, despite making up just 3 percent f fires during the perid.
And the phenmenn is accelerating (加速). The paper, published last week in the jurnal Science, warns that fires are spreading mre quickly in the Western U. S. as climate change fuels warmer and drier cnditins, psing a grwing threat t already at-risk cmmunities near frests and grasslands.
“We’re the first t dcument this trend,” said reprt c-authr Jennifer Balch, a fire eclgy expert and assciate prfessr at the University f Clrad. “The reasn why this is s imprtant is because sme f ur mst deadly and destructive wildfires have been incredibly fast, but they’ve als been relatively tiny events in terms f gegraphy.”
Take Clrad’s 2021 Marshall Fire. The fire burned a relatively small area f suburban Bulder Cunty nrth f Denver, Balch said. But the disaster, fueled by 100-mile-per-hur winds, killed tw peple and destryed mre than 1,000 hmes, making it the mst destructive fire in Clrad’s histry.
The study cmes as natural disasters strike cmmunities acrss the cuntry, frcing prperty wners, emergency planners and plicymakers t rethink hw t prepare fr extreme weather. Balch said the new research highlights a majr gap in wildfire-related mdeling, risk assessment and emergency planning, which have histrically fcused mre n wildfire intensity and size than speed.
“With warming temperatures increasing the likelihd f wildfires acrss the U. S. , we wuld expect t see mre fast fire events in the future,” the paper says.
8. Hw did the researchers get their findings?
A. By making an experiment.B. By using previus studies.
C. By asking peple questins.D. By analyzing the satellite data.
9. What is the warning f the paper published last week?
A. Wildfires are grwing faster with climate change.
B. Climate change pses a grwing threat t peple.
C. The climate will becme warmer and drier.
D. Frests and grasslands put peple at risk.
10. Why des the authr give the example f Clrad’s 2021 Marshall Fire?
A. T stress the imprtance f wildfires in Clrad.
B. T present the result f the mst destructive wildfire.
C. T shw hw a tiny event became the mst destructive fire.
D. T warn that natural disasters strike many cmmunities.
11. What is the researchers’ attitude tward wildfires in the paper?

Maths phbia (恐懼癥) is lder than yu might think. A hundred years ag, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad abut the phenmenn and hping t find ways t slve it, wrte a bk called The Fear f Mathematics and Hw t Overcme It. Maths, he said, has s much t cntribute t sciety that slving this fear is a challenge f the highest imprtance.
Why d we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it cmes dwn t a fundamental misunderstanding f what maths is. The fear f messing up a calculatin may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians wh are terrible at calculatin prves that numeracy (計(jì)算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing. What, then, is mathematics?
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. Fr me, part f the issue is that we are stuck in the first bx. A fcus cmpletely n technical skills misses the jy and excitement that can cme frm finding patterns and understanding them, frm seeing the true beauty f mathematics. That beauty lies in wnderfully elegant thinking that allws us t understand the infinite (無(wú)窮大), explre the amazing symmetries (對(duì)稱(chēng)) f art and nature, and delight in the perfectin f an abstract wrld f ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普及性) f its truths — yu can becme fluent wherever yu are frm. If we can be shwn the beauty f mathematics, we will frget t be afraid f the technical details behind it.
Tday’s self-help experts like t pint ut that, physilgically, we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. S, if yur heart is racing and yur palms are sweating befre a big event, yu simply have t tell yurself that yu are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) r psitive (awe). Our gal shuld be t try t mve peple frm a view f mathematics as a cllectin f calculatins whse great difficulty brings dread t an appreciatin f a beautiful language whse cmplexity inspires awe.
A hundred years n, Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it is nw called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.
12. Why d we fear mathematics accrding t Auerbach?
A. Because maths cntributes a lt t sciety.
B. Because we always mess up a calculatin.
C. Because we misunderstand what maths is.
D. Because we lack strategies t learn maths.

B. T inspire peple t learn and enjy a cmplex freign language.
C. T help peple learn hw t d calculatins crrectly and accurately.
D. T change the view f maths frm calculating t appreciating its beauty.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

Frm then n, Michael devted weeks t writing abut his life and I began t ffer him guidance. I began telling him hw difficult it was t understand parts f his narrative, such as its lack f cherence and the incmplete ideas. He seemed eager t cnvey his message mre clearly, and fr several mnths we had mini-lessns n sentence and paragraph structure, fcus, descriptin and spelling — all dne within the cntext f his writing. As his writing changed, there was als a change in his persnality. His anger sftened and I even fund him helping classmates with wrd prcessing. Michael discvered himself in the prcess f writing.
I nw teach language arts t 77 seventh-graders with Michael’s stry always in my mind. It serves as a cnstant reminder t quit “teaching” s much and t give my students rm t learn. I nw give my students mre chices in reading selectins and writing tpics, s they can explre, take risks, and express themselves as Michael did. Because f Michael’s need t write abut his wn life, I allw my students mre pprtunities t write abut themselves. I may never have anther Michael in the classrm, but I nw knw what a learner can accmplish when he is given the freedm t learn and the pprtunity t take risks.
