ON HOLIDAY, MANY will find themselves in places where they d nt speak the language. Once upn a time, they might have carried a phrasebk. The rise f English has made that less necessary. But mst peple — at least seven f the wrld’s eight billin — still d nt speak English. That leaves ptins like gestures, a willingness t be surprised by what arrives at dinner — r, increasingly, technlgy.
Mre and mre peple are using simple, free tls. With translatin apps, yu talk int a phne and a spken translatin is heard mments later; the apps can als listen fr anther language and prduce a translatin in yurs.
Yu may still get a surprise r tw. Ggle Translate may be the best-knwn name in machine translatin, but it ften makes mistakes. Take “my wife is gluten (麩質(zhì)) -free”, the kind f thing yu might say at a restaurant abrad. In French r Italian, Ggle Translate translates this int “my wife is withut gluten” — true t the wrds rather than the meaning.
The best tl may nt be a translatin app at all. Thugh nt marketed fr the purpse, ChatGPT, which prduces texts accrding t users’ prmpts (提示詞), is multilingual.
Sme are cncerned that apps are turning language acquisitin int a declining pursuit. Duglas Hfstadter, a writer, has argued that smething prfund will vanish when peple talk thrugh machines. Others are less wrried. Mst peple d nt have the kind f sustained cntact with a freign culture that requires them t put in the wrk t becme fluent. On their hliday, they just want a beer and the spaghetti withut incident.
But a fcus n the learner alne may miss the fundamentally scial nature f language. When yu try t ask directins in brken Japanese, yu are making direct cntact with smene. And when yu speak a language well enugh t tell a stry fluently, it is mre prfund still. The best relatinships prbably d nt require a medium.
12. What may happen fr a persn withut any knwledge f English travelling in UK?
