Landscape paintings f the 19th century displayed in Lndn’s Tate Britain museum lked rather familiar t Anna Lea Albright, a climate researcher. Artist William Turner’s unique way f painting bjects in fggy weather let Albright recall her early research n air pllutin.
“I started wndering if there was a cnnectin,” says Albright, wh visited the museum n a day ff frm wrk. Turner — an English Rmantic painter — was painting as increasing industrial plants earned Lndn the name “The Big Smke”. Turner’s early wrks were dne with sharp details while later wrks had a dreamier aesthetic (美感).
T figure ut t what extent Impressinists were reflecting the envirnmental cnditins f that time, Albright partnered with climatlgist Peter Huybers. They analyzed the cntrast f 60 wrks created by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet between 1864 and 1901. It turned ut that as the release f sulfur dixide (二氧化硫) increased ver time, the amunt f cntrast in bth Turner’s and Mnet’s paintings decreased. Hwever, wrks set in Paris by Mnet between 1864 and 1872 shwed relatively higher cntrast cmpared with Turner’s Lndn-based wrks created 20 years earlier. This, Albright and Huybers say, can be due t the much slwer start f the Industrial Revlutin in France.
The researchers als analyzed the paintings’ visibility, r the distance at which an bject can be clearly seen. Befre 1830, the visibility in Turner’s paintings averaged abut 25 kilmeters while paintings after 1830 had the average visibility f abut 10 kilmeters. T strengthen their argument, the researchers als analyzed 18 paintings frm fur ther Lndn-and Paris-based Impressinists. Again, as utdr air pllutin increased, the cntrast and visibility in the paintings decreased.
The researchers calculate that air pllutin can explain abut 61 percent f cntrast differences between the paintings. In that respect, “different painters will paint in a similar way when the envirnment is similar,” Albright says. “But I dn’t want t verstep the line and say: Oh, we can explain all f Impressinism.”
8. Why is Albright’s visit t a museum mentined?
A. T cnnect art with research.B. T intrduce previus fggy weather.
C. T shw impacts f Turner’s painting.D. T explain inspiratin fr her new study.
9. What might lead t lwer cntrast in Turner’s paintings accrding t the research?
A. His persnal habits.B. His drawing techniques.
C. The higher level f industrializatin.D. The influence f Impressinists.
10. What des the paintings’ visibility mainly indicate?
A. Painting styles vary with time and regins.B. Air pllutin needs t be cntrlled.
C. Lwer visibility is mre ppular in wrks.D. Changes in it may relate t air quality.
11. Which wrd can best describe Albright’s attitude twards the findings?
A. Objective.B. Optimistic.C. Enthusiastic.D. Dubtful.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. A

T strengthen their argument, the researchers als analyzed 18 paintings frm fur ther Lndn-and Paris-based Impressinists. Again, as utdr air pllutin increased, the cntrast and visibility in the paintings decreased.(研究人員還分析了畫作的可見性,即物體清晰可見的距離。
根據(jù)最后一段的“The researchers calculate that air pllutin can explain abut 61 percent f cntrast differences between the paintings.(研究人員計算出,空氣污染可以解釋大約61%的畫作之間的對比差異)”及“But I dn’t want t verstep the line and say: Oh, we can explain all f Impressinism.(但我不想越界說:哦,我們可以解釋所有印象派)”可知,研究人員推測,空氣污染可以解釋大約61%的畫作之間的對比度差異。但是,Albright認為這并不能解釋所有的印象派。由此可推知,Albright對該研究結(jié)果持客觀的態(tài)度。故選A。
