One estimate predicted that the ttal lss f Thwaites culd cause average glbal sea levels t surge by mre than tw feet.
In the study, the team f glacilgists used radar data by Finland’s ICEYE cmmercial satellite prgram t get a better idea f what’s happening belw the surface f the glacier. They fund that seawater flws in and away frm, the glacier with the tides, mixing with freshwater, but sme f that warm cean water als travels deep beneath the ice frmatin, ging “thrugh natural passages” r cllecting “in hles” and becming trapped.
“There are places where the water is almst at the pressure f the verlying ice, s just a little mre pressure is needed t push up the ice,” said Eric Rignt, the study’s lead authr. “The water is then squeezed enugh t jack up a clumn f mre than half a mile f ice.”
Dw suggested that additinal ice sheet mdeling culd help scientists better understand what’s happening under these majr glaciers and develp a mre precise timeline f expected sea-level rise acrss the wrld. “This wrk will help peple adapt t changing cean levels, alng with fcusing n reducing carbn emissins t prevent the wrst-case assumptin,” Dw said.

B. It mixes with freshwater, mving the glacier arund.
C. It increases pressure, lifting the glacier.
D. It creates a barrier, preventing further melting.
14. Why is additinal ice sheet mdeling suggested?
A. T stp the melting prcess.B. T accurately predict sea-level rise.
C. T help peple change sea levels.D. T persuade peple ut f carbn emissin.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
