We were seven hurs past sun-up, but yu never wuld have knwn that n Thursday afternn as the rsters - adult male chickens - began t crw. The nise started just after 2 p. m. and by the time it stpped, the dzen r s rsters wuld stretch pen their muths, extend their necks and cry ut mre than 100 times cllectively in this event, which is ne f the ldest cntests at the Kentucky State Fair. That's where I met Jhn Ball, the fair's crwing rganizer, wh talked excitedly abut the whle affair t cme. “The nly real rules are yu have t bring a rster and that yu can't egg it n during its 15 minutes in the sptlight, ” he said.
I wndered hw a rster was trained t crw in the afternn, and frtunately, nine-year-ld Ben Miller had sme insight t share. When I intrduced myself t him, he was already cvering his rster's eyes gently with his hand. “Nw, it thinks it's dark, ” Ben tld me. Part f the trick was t make his rster believe the sun hadn't risen yet. That way, it wuld be ready t cry ut as sn as it saw the light.

Over the past few years, a new street art frm in Sweden has been pening ur eyes t a wrld we had nt given much thught t befre. A cllectin f artists installed tiny buildings, stres and cafes acrss the streets f Sweden and Eurpe designed t be inhabited by mice.

Researchers have bserved Flrida carpenter ants biting ff the injured legs f their cmpanins.
These surgeries are the first knwn example f nn-human animals perfrming amputatins(截肢)t imprve a fellw animal's chances f recvering, the researchers say. “Nt nly can they d this, but they are even able t check the wunds and, depending n the lcatin, adapt the treatment accrdingly, ”says Erik Frank, an ant researcher.
