If asked t identify the mment when my belief in ghsts(鬼) started t weaken, I'd chse the time I was mistaken fr ne in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Until then, I'd enjyed several years f ghst-hunting and was cnvinced I'd encuntered many supernatural things.
Grwing up in the 80s, my interest in mysterius things was excited by watching TV shws dcumenting cases f unexplained phenmena. I jined a lcal ghst-hunting grup, ging n trips t places said t be full f ghstly activities. T us, strange things in ur phts, such as mist, signaled spirits, as did any unexpected nise caught n tape.
A cnference in Gettysburg led t that fateful encunter. At the cnference we learned f an area believed t have many ghsts, and we later set ff t explre it. We were setting up cameras when three cars appeared. A grup came ut waving laser(激光) pinters. Annyed, I ran tward them, shuting and waving my arms. The newcmers backed ff and quickly drve away. Next mrning, there were rumrs that a grup had sighted a ghst. I heard their“ghst” had emerged frm the wdland, screaming in a strange vice. “Are yu kidding? That was me!” I said.
I described the event frm my perspective, but they wuldn't listen. That's when it clicked: Hw many times had I avided the bvius explanatins just because I was enjying the excitement? It was hrrible t realize I'd spread misinfrmatin.
I read up n phtgraphy and learned that the“mist” was my wn breath rising in frnt f the lens, and that the“ghsts” were the result f lng expsures. D yu experience wrse car sickness in electric cars than in petrl cars? Yu' re nt alne— and when it cmes t self-driving cars, it may be even wrse.
Althugh scientists aren't exactly sure what causes mtin sickness, it has t d with passengers being deprived f the ability t predict future mvements. When yu read a magazine in a car, yur eyes will signal t yur brain that the car is still. Hwever, yur brain will recgnize the vibratins(振動(dòng)) and turns that the car makes. This can cnfuse the mind and make yu start t feel sick.
As fr electric cars, ne-pedal driving is ften blamed fr feelings f car sickness, accrding t the U. S. Department f Energy. The ne pedal des bth the accelerating and braking— the driver steps n the pedal t increase speed and takes their ft ff the pedal t slw dwn. If yu stp accelerating, the ne-pedal will autmatically slw and stp the car. The deceleratin caused by this system is thus mre rapid than that f petrl cars, which may lead t mtin sickness.
Anther technlgical advance that can als be related t car sickness is the larger and increasing number f screens inside electric vehicles. These screens verburden users with visual infrmatin, which discurages them frm lking utside, accrding t The Cnversatin. Passengers thereby fail t take in the“crrect” visual signals, such as the mving surrundings, which can trigger sickness.
Unfrtunately, even when peple adjust t the mvements f electric cars and experience less car sickness, self-driving vehicles might be anther challenge fr them. Accrding t a study, as much as 12 percent f the U. S. ppulatin may feel car sick while riding in autnmus vehicles.
T ensure the widespread usage f new types f vehicles, car prducers are wrking t slve such prblems with better technlgy. Fr example, Japanese cmpany Hnda is wrking n reducing the car’ s“vilent” acceleratin by making changes t the engine, said Car Magazine.
8. What des the phase“being deprived f” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Lsing.B. Restricted t.C. Fueled with.D. Develping.
9. What may cause wrse car sickness in electric cars?
A. The ne-pedal system culdn't stp the car fast enugh.
B. The screens inside d nt prvide appealing images.
C. Passengers are distracted frm lking at utside views.
D. It takes time fr peple t get adapted t creative designs.
10. What can readers predict frm the passage?
A. New types f vehicles have n bright future.
B. Car sickness can pssibly be avided in time.
C. Peple will get ver car sickness pretty sn.
D. Electrnic devices inside cars will be remved.
11. What is the authr's purpse in writing the text?
A. T recmmend ways t avid car sickness.
B. T prmte the sales f self-driving cars.
C. T clear misunderstandings f electric cars.

Warming seas acrss the glbe are endangering cral reefs, a key ecsystem that supprts marine life t live and thrive. As a nvel apprach t saving them frm extinctin, scientists have recently frzen grups f adult crals fr the first time and then revived them, accrding t a recent study.
Freezing bilgical materials, r“crypreserving” them, refers t keeping them in a deep freeze fr lng perids withut affecting the cell's viability(活性), accrding t the Science Times website. This methd usually cls them t very lw temperatures, cmmnly t 一196 ℃. Since cells wuld nrmally die at such a lw temperature due t the frmatin f ice inside, scientists need t mnitr the freezing rate and chse the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the U. S. experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces f a cmmn cral in Hawaii. After remving the micrbes n the crals, they sealed the crals in metal cntainers filled with a chemical slutin that partially dehydrated (脫水) them and helped cntrl ice grwth. When the crals reached a temperature f arund — 200℃, the remaining water in the crals slidified int a glassy frm. The crals were still alive, with their life-driving functins becming extremely slw. After being crypreserved fr a few minutes, the researchers pulled the crals ut and placed them in warm water. In tw minutes, they started cnsuming xygen—a sign f them staying alive.
Previusly, researchers had already successfully crypreserved cral larvae(幼蟲(chóng)), accrding t a study in 2018. Hwever, the larvae can nly be cllected when crals prduce eggs in large quantities, which happens just a few nights each year. “That's putting a lt f eggs in ne basket,”U. S. marine scientist Liza Rger tld Science News.
This breakthrugh ffers mre hpe t the wrld's crals, said Rger. Hwever, there's mre wrk t be dne. A few days after warming up, the crals became“stressed ut” frm the prcess and were killed by the bacteria they nrmally live in harmny with. The researchers are wrking n using antibitics(抗生素) t help them survive fr a lnger perid f time.
12. What is the key factr in the new methd f saving crals?
A. Metal cntainers.B. Lw temperature.
C. Dry ice.D. Prper cells.
13. Hw did researchers cnfirm the crypreserved crals were alive?
A. They shrank abruptly.B. They started t mve.
C. They began t breathe.D. They stretched ut.
14. What may future research fcus n?
A. Helping larvae lay mre eggs.B. Stabilizing the temperature.
C. Warming up the crals carefully.D. Extending the life f the crals.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Freezing crals fr future use.B. Cnserving crals in a new way.
C. Discvering a cling methd.D. Killing bacteria t rescue crals.
