What is a GPA?
A GPA, r Grade Pint Average, typically ranging frm ne t fur, is a number reflecting yur curse perfrmance n average. It’s used by universities t determine whether students meet academic standards and by students t enhance jb prspects r secure admissin int pst-graduate prgrams.
Hw t calculate a GPA?
● Determine the letter grade and the number f credit hurs fr each curse yu take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade t grade pints using yur schl’s grading system;
● Multiply the grade pints by the credit hurs fr that curse;
● Add up all the credit hurs fr the curses;
● Divide the ttal number f grade pints by the ttal credit hurs and yu get the GPA.
What are the cnsequences f failing cllege curses?
● Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts yur GPA fr that academic year, limiting clubs, rganizatins and prgram chices, as cmpetitive prgrams require tp GPAs.
● Mst financial aid prgrams require a specific GPA. A sharp drp in GPA due t several curse failures may lead t withdrawal frm financial aid prgrams, unless yu retake the curses and pass.
● Fr cllege athletes n sprts schlarships, failing curses repeatedly can lead t lsing schlarships and team sprts.
● Failing multiple curses can result in schl remval and affect future applicatins.
1. Where is this text prbably taken frm?
A. An academic curse guide.B. A campus jb fair pster.
C. A graduate applicatin frm.D. An athletic team schedule.
2. What is Jane Smith’s GPA this term?

I ften wake up t my alarm after a shrt night and step ut f bed t a day I’ve fught thrugh cuntless times. I rush my mrning rutine and run t my car. My radi switches t my favrite sng, but I have t listen t an audible (可聽的) bk fr an assignment due tmrrw.
When I get t schl, I start with Spanish, my hardest class. Despite being arund all year, I have n clue what’s ging n. I then walk t my English class, in which I was stuck in the language rules. The assignments take much energy that my perfectinist nature is unable t take n in schl, s I save them fr later, mst prbably late at night.
This is my reality as a student with dyslexia, a learning disrder in reading and spelling: assignments that take three times as lng as they’re meant t, late nights and early mrnings t even slightly keep up with my classes.
I was tld that Advanced Placement U. S. Histry wuld be my hardest class. But here, I am in my element. Despite being three assignments behind, I’m actively engaged. Yes, my passin fr histry heightens my fcus, but my teacher’s willingness t wrk with me is what allws me t fly high.
Teachers need t ffer alternative structures that make learning mre accessible. I’ve had teachers wh teach lecture-based classes where students are expected t take ntes and listen. As a student with dyslexia, this desn’t wrk. A fix fr that is as simple as prviding alternative resurces: a slide shw students can g back t after class, r perhaps even an activity that further plays with the cncepts.
Nw, many schls are shifting t appraches that meet the needs f all kids. Hwever, advcacy wrk can still be dne t supprt students with dyslexia. If schl systems are willing t prvide supprt and educatin by creating an accessible class structure frm the start, students wn’t be stuck int academic tracks that dn’t push them t their full ptential.
4. Why des the authr have t d his hmewrk late at night?
A. He is assigned extra hmewrk.B. He fails t manage his spare time.
C. He needs time t d it well enugh.D. He dislikes tasks related t languages.

6. What des the authr think f lecture-based classes?
A. Satisfying.B. Inspiring.C. Rewarding.D. Demanding.
7. What des the authr advise schls t d fr students?
A. Offer classes with alternatives.B. Ask educatinal experts t give lectures.
C. Advcate ut-f-class activities.D. Get teachers trained in special educatin.

During a judging perid fr a recent shrt stry cntest, I started thinking a lt abut dialgue tags. Because in many submissins characters didn’t “say” a thing. They shuted, they inquired, they assumed. Sme characters screamed while thers murmured. But n ne “said” anything. And I started wndering why.
The mre I thught abut it, the mre I understd the temptatin. We’re always encuraged t use strng, actinable verbs in ur prse. Why walk when yu can skip r wander? Why cry when yu can sb r weep? Why wuldn’t we reach fr exciting verbs instead f dull “said”? Why culdn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its wn right? The prblem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting t becme smething mre than the sum f its parts. Withut smething t prvide structure, a cllectin f the wrld’s mst glrius diamnds wuld still nly amunt t a heap f rcks.
Dialgue is yur diamnd, friends. When we read yur wrk, yur dialgue shuld be s lifelike that ur brains “hear” each line instead f merely reading it. We dn’t need t be tld a character is shuting — we can sense it in the way they spit ut wrds, clench fists, r strm frm the rm. What’s mre, readers may nt initially imagine a particular line being “sbbed.” When we reach the end f a sentence and find ut ur leading lady has actually sbbed instead f whispered, it pulls us right ut f the stry. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust ur understanding and begin again. But that wnderful mmentum when we’re fully immersed in the scene, hlding ur breath t find ut what ur herine says next, is lst.
Creating a successful wrk f fictin is abut giving the reader all the materials they need t build yur fictinal wrld in their mind. Readers need believable dialgue. And if yu’ve created dynamic characters wh speak wrds we can really hear, yu will never need t tell us hw smething was said.
8. What d we knw frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. The wrd “said” is verused in ur stries.
B. The use f exciting verbs makes characters alive.
C. Varieties f verbs are preferred by judges at cntests.
D. Strng verbs are cnsidered t be an eye-catcher.
9. Accrding t the authr, ______ cntributes mst t a gd stry.
A. a talkative characterB. a vivid cnversatin
C a cllectin f dialgue tagsD. a wild imaginatin
10. Which f the fllwing des the authr prbably agree with?
A. Creative dialgue tags help keep readers immersed in reading.
B. What was said shuld be priritised ver hw it was said.
C. Readers may better understand a scene after rereading the line.
D. The mre materials a wrk f fictin cntains, the mre successful it is.
11. What argumentative methds are used in this article?
① Using examples ② Justifying an assumptin
③ Cmparing and cntrasting ④ Appealing t readers’ emtins
A. ①②B. ②④C. ③④D. ①③

A theme at this year’s Wrld Ecnmic Frum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the perceived need t “speed up breakthrughs in research and technlgy.” Sme f this framing was mtivated by the climate emergency, sme by the pprtunities and challenges presented by generative artificial intelligence. Yet in varius cnversatins, it seemed t be taken fr granted that t address the wrld’s prblems, scientific research needs t mve faster. The WEF mindset is similar t the Silicn Valley dictate—t mve fast and break things. But what if the thing being brken is science? Or public trust?
The WEF meeting tk place just tw weeks after Harvard University President Claudine Gay stepped dwn after cmplaints were made abut her plitical science schlarship. In respnse, Gay requested crrectins t several f her papers. Althugh it may be impssible t determine just hw widespread such prblems really are, it’s hard t imagine that the scene f high-prfile schlars crrecting and retracting papers has nt had a negative impact n public trust in science and perhaps in experts bradly.
In recent years we’ve seen imprtant papers, written by utstanding scientists and published in celebrated jurnals, retracted because f questinable data r methds, hence a questin: Are schlars at supercmpetitive places such as Harvard and Stanfrd rushing t publish rather than taking the time t d their wrk right?
It’s impssible t answer this questin scientifically because there’s n scientific definitin f what cnstitutes “rushing. ”But there’s little dubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendus pressure t prduce results—and a lt f them—quickly.
The prblem is nt unique t the U. S. In Eurpe, frmal research assessments—which are used t allcate (分配) future funding—have fr years judged academic departments largely n the quantity f their utput. A recent refrm urging an emphasis n quality ver quantity allwed that the existing system had created “cunterincentives. ”
Gd science takes time. Mre than 50 years elapsed between the 1543 publicatin f Cpernicus’s On the Revlutins f the Heavenly Spheres. And it tk just abut half a century fr gelgists and gephysicists t accept gephysicist Alfred Wegener’s idea f cntinental drift.
There’s plenty f circumstantial evidence that scientists and ther schlars are pushing results ut far faster than they used t. Cnsider the sheer vlume f academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at mre than seven millin a year, cmpared with fewer than a millin as recently as 1980. Sme f this grwth is driven by mre scientists and mre c-authrship f papers, but the numbers als suggest that the research wrld has priritized quantity ver quality. Researchers may need t slw dwn if we are t prduce knwledge wrthy f trust.
12. WEF meeting in Switzerland advcated that ________.
A. researchers need t achieve breakthrughs mre rapidly
B. public trust in science is nt suppsed t be easily brken
C. WEF and Silicn Valley reach an agreement t mve fast
D. climate emergency and AI push scientific research hard
13. Which f the fllwing examples fails t prve that gd science takes time?
A. Gay’s crrectin and retractin f papers.B. Publicatin f Cpernicus’s thery.
C. High-prfile schlars’ tremendus utput.D. Acceptance f the idea f cntinental drift.
14. The underlined wrd “cunterincentives” in para. 5 prbably means ________.
A. measures t increase quantities f utputB. discuragements f high quality papers
C. rewards fr leading universities’ researchD. cntradictry mtives fr future funding
15. Which f the fllwing is best title f the passage?
A. WEF Cincides with Silicn ValleyB. Cllapse f Public Trust

Stephanie, a freshman at East Peria High Schl, had just finished her secnd day f classes, filled with excitement. Eager t enjy the warm afternn, she decided t take her bicycle ut fr a ride. The wind rushed past her, refreshing her spirit as she sped dwn a hill. Hwever, in a cruel twist f fate, disaster struck. She suddenly lst cntrl f her bike. The wrld arund her seemed t slw dwn as she felt the bike slam int the grund. In a hrrifying mment, she realized that ne f the bike’s handle grips (車把) was missing, which left a sharp, expsed metal pipe that pierced her right leg, severed her artery (動脈) and flded her bdy with intense pain.
Panic set in as she lay n the grund, her mind racing. A severed artery can cause rapid bld lss, leading t uncnsciusness and death within minutes. Stephanie felt herself slipping away, believing she wuldn’t survive.
But in the midst f her anguish, help was n the way.
