Charlie frm Sydney, felt driven and mtivated when he first launched his small business. Hwever, it wasn’t lng befre he became bgged dwn, having a decline in mtivatin. That’s the truble with mtivatin. Fina Kumfr, a senir research fellw at the University f Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre, explains that mtivatin is influenced by the brain’s reward netwrk, particularly the prefrntal crtex(前額葉皮層) and striatum(紋狀體).
“The prefrntal crtex is respnsible fr higher-level thinking, like making decisins, reasning and planning fr the future,” says Dr. Kumfr. “The striatum is imprtant in habitual prcesses r what we d withut thinking.” A chemical called dpamine(多巴胺) is anther imprtant cmpnent f this reward netwrk. It’s released when we d smething that makes us feel gd, frm eating a tasty meal t ging fr a jg, and the prefrntal crtex and striatum are very sensitive t it. “Dpamine is really imprtant fr reward and mtivatin,” says Dr. Kumfr. “It’s the release f dpamine in the striatum and prefrntal crtex that ultimately determines ur level f mtivatin and helps us decide what we’re ging t d.”
The truble is that shrt-term decisins are mre likely t yield a dpamine rush than things that take lnger t achieve, like lsing weight r, in Charlie’s case, perating a successful business. “When we’re deciding whether t d smething, we’re weighing up the csts versus the benefits,” says Dr. Kumfr. “If yu take smething like eating healthily, fr example, the benefit might be that yu lse sme weight r yu’re less likely t have certain medical cnditins, but the cst is yu’re ptentially nt ging t be able t eat chips, ice cream r ther unhealthy fd.”
T enhance mtivatin, Kumfr suggests making rewards mre immediate and breaking dwn larger gals int smaller. Charlie fund that rewarding himself fr small accmplishments and turning these actins int habits were key t bsting his mtivatin. By ding s, he reduced the reliance n his prefrntal crtex fr cnstant cst-benefit analyses and allwed the habit-frming striatum t take ver, making psitive behaviral changes mre autmatic.

9.What chemical makes us happy?
A.The dpamine.B.The striatum.
C.The mtivatin.D.The prefrntal crtex.
10.Why d peple fail t achieve lng-term gals?
A.Because they demand mre dpamine.
B.Because we prefer shrt-term decisins.
C.Because they ften have higher csts.
D.Because we like t eat unhealthy fd.
11.Hw did Charlie slve his mtivatin prblem?
A.Aviding any frm f reward.
B.Fcusing nly n lng-term gals.
C.Ignring the rle f the prefrntal crtex.
D.Rewarding himself cnstantly and making smaller gals.
There’s a whitebard n the refrigeratr in du Plessises’ kitchen the cuple uses t plan dinners. But with tw yung children, full-time jbs and the nearest supermarket20 minutes away, figuring ut what t eat can smetimes be challenging. T lighten the lad, Mr. du Plessis regularly uses a grcery delivery service.
America’s appetite fr nline grcery sales sared mre than 50%, frm $62 billin in 2019 t $96 billin in 2020, accrding t the Fd and Drug Administratin. In 2022, researchers frm the University f Michigan mdeled a single 36-item grcery cart t cmpare greenhuse emissins frm an e-cmmerce grcery delivery and a traditinal trip t the stre t get the same items. They fund that using an electric vehicle t pick up grceries culd cut emissins by as much as half, cmpared t a gas-pwered vehicle. They als fund that hme delivery culd be an even better ptin. That’s because with a delivery vehicle, rders are ften clustered, with a driver drpping ff nt just yur grceries, but als hitting neighbrs during the same run.
When it cmes t delivery services, Mr. du Plessis therizes that because this guy’s literally delivering tw burgers and like tw sdas, such ptins wuld have a big ftprint. “Fr the vlume f fd cmpared t the amunt f carbn emitted, yeah, the equatin desn’t quite add up.”
