Yu are nt cmmunicating with a human being, but a chatbt. It is using artificial intelligence (AI) t cmmunicate with yu. This might sund strange, but in recent years, chatbts have becme an usual tl fr banks and large cmpanies arund the wrld.
Having wrkers answer peple's questins and cmplaints can be expensive. And wrkers cannly wrk several hurs a day making custmers wait lnger fr a respnse (答復(fù)). S nt nly cmpanies, but mre schls have als begun using chatbt technlgy, says Keith Rajecki. He is with Oracle Higher Educatin, a cmputer sftware cmpany that serves these institutins.
Rajecki ntes that reducing csts and respnse time is ne f the main reasns why schls and cmpanies are turning t this technlgy. Hwever, the purpse f many schls is t find ways t better serve students, since students are used t cmmunicating nline thrugh Facebk r WeChat, says Rajecki.
Nw Oracle is ffering many schls a chatbt which can d everything frm helping students register (注冊) fr classes t helping them ask fr a few days ff. Oracle is nt the nly cmpany wrking n chatbt technlgy. Businesses like AdmitHub and Ivy.ai are invlved in similar effrts.
Western Gvernrs University, r WGU, als received a $750,000 award t experiment with a new kind f chatbt. "We're nt trying t create a bt that answers simple questins," said Jasn Leven, the directr f WGU Labs. "We're trying t create a chatbt that can help decisin making fr students."
Ian Jacbs is with the market research cmpany Frrester. He suggests that technlgy like chatbts can wrk well if it is able t d what users ask f it. Jacbs says the prblem will appear when cst cutting becmes an imprtant reasn fr using the technlgy. This means schls and cmpanies are mre likely t try using chatbts fr things they are nt yet able t d, such as cmmunicating in the way humans d. Fr ne thing, there are hundreds f ways t wrd even simple requests. Fr anther, chatbts aren't able t deal with emtins (感情). They can't understand hw humans feel, nt t speak f cmfrting (安慰) them.
