Frm the mment I picked up a camera in cllege, I fell in lve with it. I lst interest in ther studies, and all I wanted t d was take pictures fr the university newspaper, the Minnesta Daily. In six mnths, I was able t get a lt f great experience.
The week I finished cllege, I was cntacted by the Wrthingtn Daily Glbe, a reginal daily newspaper in suthern Minnesta with a histry f excellence in phtgraphy. By sme miracle I was hired, and the tw-year experience that fllwed was like a master class in phtjurnalism. I wrked with a wnderful writer named Paul Gruchw. Tgether we wuld search the farming cmmunities fr stries. Frm Paul I learned hw t be a patient listener, as well as the imprtance f giving each subject time and sincere attentin.
A year later, I wrked fr Bb ——Natinal Gegraphic’s legendary directr f phtgraphy. Wherever I traveled in the wrld, taking beautiful pictures was always my gal. Hwever, later in my career, I wanted my pictures t make a real difference in peple’s lives. That is why each spring I tur tw r three develping cuntries, shting prtraits f peple whse lives are better because f the dedicated wrkers wh care abut them. The phts are used in a variety f fund-raising prducts. The ther issue that stle my heart was the envirnment. With supprt frm the Natinal Gegraphic Expeditins Cuncil, I have traveled all ver the United States t phtgraph the last ne percent f wilderness left here.
I am deeply grateful fr my life in phtgraphy and the amazing lessns it has taught me. I have learned that wmen really d hld up half the sky; that language isn’t always necessary, but tuch usually is; that all peple are nt alike, but they d mstly have the same hpes and fears; that judging thers des great harm, but listening t them enriches; and that it is impssible t hate a grup f peple nce yu get t knw ne f them as an individual.
24. What happened after the authr graduated frm cllege?
A. She started teaching phtgraphy.
B. She began wrking at the Minnesta Daily.
C. She gt a jb at the Wrthingtn Daily Glbe.
D. She picked up a camera fr the first time.

When wmen sit tgether t watch a mvie n TV, they usually talk simultaneusly (同時(shí)的) abut a variety f subjects, including children, men, careers and what’s happening in their lives. When grups f men and wmen watch a mvie tgether, the men usually end up telling the wmen t shut up. Men can either talk r watch the screen -- they can’t d bth -- and they dn’t understand that wmen can. Besides, wmen cnsider that the pint f all getting tgether is t have a gd time and develp relatinships -- nt just t sit there like cuch ptates staring at the screen.
During the ad breaks, a man ften asks a wman t explain the plt and tell him where the relatinship between the characters is ging. He is unable, unlike wmen, t read the subtle bdy language signals that reveal hw the characters are feeling emtinally. Since wmen riginally spent their days with the ther wmen and children in the grup, they develped the ability t cmmunicate successfully t maintain ( 維 持) relatinships. Fr a wman, speech cntinues t have such a clear purpse: t build relatinships and make friends. Fr men, t talk is t relate the facts.
Men see the telephne as a cmmunicatin tl fr sending facts and infrmatin t ther peple, but a wman sees it as a means f bnding. A wman can spend tw weeks n vacatin with her girlfriend and, when she returns hme, telephne the same girlfriend and talk fr anther tw hurs.
There is n persuasive evidence that scial cnditining, the fact that girls’ mthers talked them mre, is the reasn why girls talk mre than bys. Psychiatrist Dr. Michael Lewis, authr f Scial Behaviur and Language Acquisitin, cnducted experiments that fund mthers talked t and lked at, baby girls mre ften than baby bys. Scientific evidence shws parents respnd t the brain bias (偏好) f their children. Since a girl’s brain is better rganized t send and receive speech, we therefre talk t them mre. Hwever, mthers wh try t talk t their sns are usually pinted t receive nly shrt and unclear replies.
28. Why wuld wmen usually talk a lt with thers while watching TV?
A. Because they can bth talk and watch the screen at the same time.
B. Because they think they can enjy themselves and build relatinships.
C. Because they are afraid f awkward silence with their families and friends.
D. Because they have t explain the plt and bdy language t their husbands.
29. Why wuld a wman talk t her girlfriend again n the phne fr hurs after a vacatin?
A. T keep a clse tie with her.B. T experience the happy time again.
C. T recmmend her a new scenic spt.D. T remind her f smething frgtten.
30. What des the authr want t tell us mst?
A. Men d nt like talking because they rely mre n facts.
B. Wmen lve t talk because they are mre sciable than men.
C. Scial cnditining is nt the reasn why wmen lve talking.
D. Wmen’ s brains are better rganized fr language and cmmunicatin.
31. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Wmen Are Scially Trained t TalkB. Wmen Lve t Talk
C. Talking Maintains RelatinshipsD. Men Talk Differently frm Wmen

That, itself, is psychlgically healing. It draws yu away frm cncentratin n yurself, and pssibly twards helping thers in need f cmfrt.
Anther experiment, frm the University f Kent, fund that when peple were experiencing sadness, listening t music that was “beautiful but sad” imprved their md. In fact, it did s when the persn first cnsciusly accept the situatin causing their sadness, and then began listening t the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they fund that it did.
These findings link with ther studies that shw accepting yur sad situatin emtinally leads t healing and grwth beynd it. It seems unbelievable but it des make sense. Fr example, research frm Crnell University fund that accepting discmfrt abut a life experience r new situatin, and viewing it as a step twards grwth and change, encurages peple t find a pathway thrugh it, beynd it. As Churchill famusly said, “If yu’re ging thrugh hell, keep ging.” That discmfrt pints yu twards creating a plan, a new actin. It brings hpe.
