Whle crn is gd fr yu, but many f its prcessed varieties are nt. The lng-term health cnsequences f ver-cnsumptin may be significant.
While mst f us are encuraged t “eat mre fruits and vegetables”, we prbably dn’t realize just hw much ne vegetable has becme part f ur daily diet. Peple in the United States eat mre than 672 billin punds f crn per year, which breaks dwn t mre than 2,000 punds per persn annually.
Eating the whle frm f crn — which is als cnsidered a grain — at a summer dinner, as ppcrn, r as crn flur has undubted health benefits such as lwering ne’s risk f cancer, strke, and heart disease. But mst f us are cnsuming less whle crn and far mre prcessed crn in the frm f crn il, crn starch, crnmeal, and high fructse crn syrup(果葡糖漿) — which can cntribute t negative health effects including high bld pressure and high bld sugar.
As a main ingredient in varius prcessed fds and animal feed crn has had a huge impact n diets glbally. It has significantly influenced American and glbal fd systems, prmting diets high in prcessed fds and animal fat, and lw in fiber (纖維) and nutritinal diversity.
Indeed, mst f us are unaware that we are cnsuming crn derivatives (派生物) in cuntless fd surces including biscuits and bread, baby fds, chewing gum, dughnuts, ice cream, candies, prcessed meat, canned fruit, and mst sft drinks.
Is prcessed crn bad fr yu? Abslutely. This is mst bvius in the byprducts f crn that have been shwn t have negative health utcmes.
High fructse crn syrup has been linked t increased risks f verweight, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Sme studies suggest that high fructse crn syrup increases markers f inflammatin (炎癥) even mre than table sugar. High fructse crn syrup makes up abut 40 percent f ur added sugars, s aviding fds with it is ne way t naturally lwer added sugar intake.

Scientists are using new technlgy t help endangered animals by listening t their sunds. The research, cnducted by The University f Warwick and The University f New Suth Wales in Australia, studies animal sunds frm endangered species including that f elephants, whales and birds.
It uses a new methd adapted frm tech used t study brain waves in neurscience. Analysis f animal sunds can be used t estimate their ppulatin size, t check what animals live in a particular area, t understand their migratin patterns, and t understand any negative impacts they may experience due t the increasing levels f nise created by human activity that is ccurring in mst f their habitats. Such knwledge is necessary in develping envirnmental management and prtectin strategies.
The new methd was shwn t be mre precise than the traditinal nes. While testing this new methd, called the Superlet transfrm, the study als revealed sme previusly unreprted details in animal sunds. Fr example, the Asian elephant call isn’t just made up f cntinuus sunds, but als cntains sunds that are “pulsed”, r regularly timed waves f sund energy.
“The new methd achieves greater precisin while making it easier t use fr thse with less specialized training, s it shuld prve t be a hugely valuable tl fr animal sund researchers that dn’t have an engineering backgrund,” said Lead Researcher Ben Jancvich, a PhD candidate frm The University f New Suth Wales.
Current methds have difficulty in precisely revealing bth the rhythms and pitch (音高) f sunds at the same time. These limitatins are mre prnunced at lwer frequencies, influencing the analysis f sunds like thse made by blue whales — gentle giants f the sea, sadly listed as an endangered species.
The new technlgy will be free fr peple t use, thrugh a simple-t-use app, making it easy fr researchers frm different fields t use, withut needing wide knwledge f audi signal analysis.
12. What is mainly talked abut in paragraph 2?
A. The significance f prper animal prtectin laws.B. The applicatins f animal sund analysis.
C. The challenge faced by animal ppulatins.D. The techniques used t study brain waves.

A. T shw the perfrmance f the Superlet transfrm.
B. T stress the uniqueness f Asian elephants’ calls.
C. T emphasize the imprtance f studying animal sunds.
D. T cmpare the difference in sunds between Asian elephants and ther species.
14. What des the underlined wrd “prnunced” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Varied.B. Cmplicated.C. Rare.D. Nticeable.
15. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
