Adptive mther Jennifer Schebinger and her husband, Chris Schebinger, said they had n interest in excluding the birth mther. “Yu knw, yu can’t have t many peple lving yu, right? Why culdn’t he be bth f urs?” Chris Schebinger said.
S, year after year, they sent Austin piles f pictures and bund bks detailing Steven’s every majr and minr milestnes. The Schebingers said they did this s that when Austin and their sn were ready, they culd pick up right where they left ff. The tw reunited when Steven was 7 years ld. Austin taught him hw t fish, and they have kept in cntact ever since. Austin felt blessed beynd wrds, and Steven felt he gt the best f bth wrlds.
Steven is nw 26, married, and with a baby by f his wn. Much t the delight f Austin, he named the child Riley. “I think the lessn we learned is that smetimes we create barriers where barriers dn’t need t be. And when we pull dwn thse barriers, we really find lve n the ther side,” Chris Schrbinger said.
That lve n the ther side has cntinued t grw. The families spend Thanksgiving as ne, and will f curse be getting tgether again in the days ahead.

The wrld is full f advice n hw t get a gd night’s sleep, but smetimes ding s just isn’t pssible. If yu are struggling with a sleep disrder, are a shift wrker r have a baby wh wakes every few hurs, being tld hw t sleep well can be annying. Fr thers, despite feeling exhausted all day, a furth episde f yur favrite TV series can seem mre appealing than ging t bed.
Hw d yu knw if yu are sleep-deprived? Fr sme peple, the answer will be bvius; fr thers, it may be less s. Russell Fster, a prfessr at the University f Oxfrd, specifies three signs that yu are prbably nt getting enugh sleep: “Feeling that yu dn’t perfrm at yur peak during the day; versleeping n free days; r craving (渴望得到) a nap during the day.”
“Lack f gd sleep can cause an imbalance in yur appetite hrmnes(荷爾蒙),” says Martin Meadws, a registered dietitian: “The hrmne ghrelin, which causes yu t feel hungry, increases and the hrmne leptin, which signals that yu are full, decreases.”
As Meadws says: “It’s a perfect strm where we want t eat mre and we dn’t knw when t stp, cmbined with the fact that when we are sleep-deprived ur willpwer is lwer, and it all becmes pretty tricky. Pr sleep, r sleep deprivatin (匱乏), leads t an increased likelihd f pr lifestyle chices. Many f us get stuck in the habit f eating junk fd, and the knck-n effect is that the junk fd disturbs ur sleep, because it’s higher in sugar; it’s mre stimulating.”
“Shrt term, yu can get away with the negative influence f sleep deprivatin f yu,” says Fster. “It’s in the lng term that things start t fall apart.” He catalgues the ill effects: “Yur cgnitive perfrmance drps with accumulated sleep deprivatin — yur cmmunicatin skills, yur decisin-making skills, yur memry.” There is als an increased risk f cardivascular (心血管的) disease, depressin and psychsis.
Frtunately, accrding t Meadws, mst f us culd d with an extra hur t an hur and a half f sleep each night t cpe with sleep deprivatin. And if yu had a bad night’s sleep, Meadws recmmends “making a cnscius effrt t chse fds such as whlegrains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Because they are packed with fiber and water, they will help yu feel full while limiting yur verall energy intake.”
28. The examples given in the first paragraph are intended t ______.

“Ging wireless is the future fr just abut everything!” That is a qute frm scientist Sreekanth Chalasani, and we can’t help but agree. Realizing this, a team f scientists has made a breakthrugh tward wirelessly cntrlling human cells using sund, in a technique called “sngenetics (聲遺傳學(xué)).” This cncept may seem strange but let us explain.
Basically, the term “sngenetics” means using ultrasund (超聲波) t change the behavir f cells in a nn-invasive manner. “We already knw that ultrasund is safe, and that it can g thrugh bne, muscle and ther tissues, making it the ultimate tl fr cntrlling cells deep in the bdy,” says Chalasani.
Lw-frequency ultrasund waves can target a particular prtein that is sensitive t the signal. This research, published in Nature Cmmunicatins, fcused n TRPA1. When this prtein is stimulated thrugh the ultrasund waves, it als stimulates the cells which carry it. What type f cell is being stimulated depends n the utcme. Fr example, a muscle cell may cntract with stimulatin, r a neurn (神經(jīng)元) in the brain will fire. In this experiment, scientists genetically marked cells with an increased cncentratin f TRPA1, making them the key targets f the ultrasund waves.
Currently, treating cnditins like Parkinsn’s disease requires scientists t implant electrdes (電極) in the brain which stimulate certain disrdered cells. Researchers hpe that sngenetics can ne day replace these invasive treatments.
In the future, the team wants t adjust the placement and amunt f TRPAI arund the bdy using the gene treatment. Gene delivery techniques have already been shwn t be successful in humans, such as in treating blindness. Therefre, it’s just a case f adjusting this thery t a different sund-based setting.
“Gene delivery techniques already exist fr getting a new gene—such as TRPA1—int the human heart,” Chalasani says. “If we can then use an external ultrasund device t activate thse cells, that culd really change pacemakers.” There is still a while t g befre this treatment can becme a reality. The future fr sngenetics, thugh, lks bright.
32. What’s wrking principle fr sngenetics?
A. Using medicine interventinal therapies.
B. Changing cells’ shape with new equipment.
C. Cntrlling cells in a nn-invasive manner.
D. Using a kind f unique medical cmpsitin.
33. What did the scientists intend t d in the experiment?
A. Change the cncentratin f the prtein.
B. Find target cells fr treatment precisely.
C. Analyze the prtein sensitive t the signal.
D. Chse the type f cell t be stimulated.
34. What can we learn abut sngenetics frm Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. It can be applied t ther fields besides medicine.
B. It may replace sme traditinal medical treatments.
C. It will ttally transfrm gene delivery techniques.
D. It has succeeded in curing diseases like blindness.
35. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Can cells be cntrlled by sund? B. Hw is sngenetics clinically used?
C. Are gene delivery techniques available? D. What are applicatins f sngenetics?

Autnmy-supprtive parenting is an apprach that fcuses n building a child’s sense f agency in the wrld as well as a strng sense f self. 36 We shuld recgnize that children have a different perspective r experience than adults. It even adjusts the temperature, depending n whether yu want t eat it straight away r take it hme with yu! T pay, yu place yur fd n a smart cash desk, which immediately calculates (計(jì)算) the cst. There’s even a 24-hur ndle machine just utside, which ffers ht and fresh fd arund the clck. The canteen ffers a huge amunt f chices and the dishes taste great. It is really fun t get “a taste f the future”. Hwever, I’m nt sure I wuld like all restaurants t be run by rbts. I can see the benefits fr busy families r ffice wrkers needing a quick lunch, but what abut lnely lder peple wh wuld miss the human tuch?
