Nine is an imprtant number in Chinese culture because its prnunciatin means “l(fā)ng” in Chinese. Accrding t the Bk f Changes (《易經(jīng)》), the number six is cnsidered yin while nine is yang. The ninth day f the ninth lunar mnth in the Chinese calendar has smething interesting—tw nines, s the day is given the Chinese name “Chngyang”.
When it cmes t the Duble Ninth Festival, tw imprtant plants, the crnel (茱萸) and chrysanthemum, have t be talked abut. Crnel, famus in traditinal Chinese medicine, is widely planted in the nrth and suth f China. Ancient peple believed that wearing the crnel n this day culd help stp illness and keep away frm the bad things. They als believed that the chrysanthemum culd drive away bad luck and stp ne frm getting a cld in late autumn. S, drinking chrysanthemum wine has always been a traditinal custm at this festival.
As times change, the festival has been given mre meaning. In 1989, the Chinese gvernment set it as a day fr the elders, t call n all t care abut and lve them, s as t build a beautiful, age-friendly sciety.
