My first dependant was a duck called Mr. Kite. As a cream-faced fur-year-ld, it was my jb at the nursery t turn the eggs in the incubatr (恒溫箱) every day: ne side “O”, the ther side “X”.
We lived in a small, inner-city huse with a lng, thin garden in east Oxfrd at the time. As a gentle-hearted vets (獸醫(yī)的) daughter, my mum culdn't resist adpting these ducks. I named them Buttercup, Mr. Kite and Drakey. We made them a pnd.The bttm was a msaic (馬賽克) made frm all the bits f plate and cup that had been brken during family rws. Within 30 secnds, the pnd was s full f duck drppings that we never saw the msaic again.
One f the mst magical mments during my caring fr ducks was the night it snwed. Mum, ver whelmed by pity and grandmtherly cncern, insisted that Mr. Kite and her friends —— yes, Mr. Kite was female —— be spared anther freezing night in the wden huse my dad had built fr them at the end f the garden; we caught them, flapping and shuting, and brught them in t sleep in the kitchen.Have yu ever seen three ducks g wild in a tiny kitchen? It was ne f the best mments f my childhd. It smelled like the underside f hell's scks by the time they had left.
I used t spend my summers lazing in a swimming pl with Mr. Kite and the thers. Eventually, thugh, ur neighbur cmplained that they were being wken at 4:45 a.m.. S, the feathered three went t live with an ld cuple in the cuntry. Fair enugh —— yu dn't mve t the city t have the dawn trn apart by quacking---althugh it must have made a change frm student parties and the sund f 19-year-lds being sick by the bins.
I wnder nw if this early experience f duck adptin is the reasn that, at least three times a week, what ever the weather, yu will find me swimming in the Thames r a nearby lake with the ducks. Althugh they never say hell.

根據(jù)第一段“As a cream-faced fur-year-ld, it was my jb at the nursery t turn the eggs in the incubatr(恒溫箱)every day: ne side “O”, the ther side “X”.(作為一個面如奶油色的四歲孩子,我在繁育房的工作是每天在孵化器里翻轉(zhuǎn)雞蛋:一邊是“O”,另一邊是“X”。)”
根據(jù)第二段“As a gentle-hearted vets(獸醫(yī)的)daughter,my mum culdn't resist adpting these ducks.(作為一個心地善良的獸醫(yī)的女兒,我媽媽忍不住收養(yǎng)了這些鴨子。)” 故選A項。
根據(jù)第三段“One f the mst magical mments during my caring fr ducks was the night it snwed. …Have yu ever seen three ducks g wild in a tiny kitchen? It was ne f the best mments f my childhd. Nt all birds sing, but several thusand species d. They sing t defend their territry and crn (柔聲唱) t impress ptential mates. “Why birds sing is relatively well-answered,” says Iris Adam, a behaviral neurscientist. Hwever, the big questin fr her was why birds sing s much.
“As sn as yu sing, yu reveal yurself,” Adam says. “Like, where yu are and where yur territry is.” In a new study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins, Adam and her c-wrkers ffer a new explanatin fr why birds take that risk. They may have t sing a lt every day t give their vcal (發(fā)聲的) muscles the regular exercise they need t prduce tp-quality sngs. T figure ut whether the muscles that prduce birdsngs require daily exercise, Adam designed an experiment n zebra finches-the little Australian sngbirds.
She prevented them frm singing fr a week by keeping them in the dark cage almst arund the clck. Light is what galvanizes the birds t sing, s she had t wrk t keep them frm warbling (鳴叫). “The first tw r three days, it’s quite easy,” she says. “But the lnger the experiment ges, the mre they are like, ‘I need t sing.’” At that pint, she’d tap the cage and tell them t stp singing.
After a week, the birds’ singing muscles lst half their strength. But Adam wndered whether that impacted the quality f sngs. When she played a male’s sng befre and after the seven days f darkness, she culdn’t hear a difference. But when Adam played it t a grup f female birds, six ut f nine preferred the sng that came frm a male wh’d been using his singing muscles daily.
Adam’s cnclusin shws that “sngbirds need t exercise their vcal muscles t prduce tp-perfrmance sngs. If they dn’t sing, they lse perfrmance, and their sngs get less attractive t females.” This may help explain sngbirds’ cntinuus singing.
It’s a gd rule t live by, whether yu’re a bird r a human-practice makes perfect, at least when it cmes t singing ne’s heart ut.
28.Accrding t Iris Adam, birds sing s much t ______.
A.warn ther birds f risksB.prduce mre sngs
C.perfrm perfectly in singingD.defend their territry
29.What des the underlined wrd “galvanizes” in Paragraph 3 mean?

C.Daily exercise keeps birds healthy.D.Practice makes birds perfect singers.
由文章第二段中“They may have t sing a lt every day t give their vcal (發(fā)聲的) muscles the regular exercise they need t prduce tp-quality sngs.
由劃線詞上文“She prevented them frm singing fr a week by keeping them in the dark cage almst arund the clck. A. Prepares準(zhǔn)備;B. Stimulates刺激;C. Frbids禁止;D. Frightens使驚嚇。故選B。
由文章第四段“After a week, the birds’ singing muscles lst half their strength. If they dn’t sing, they lse perfrmance, and their sngs get less attractive t females.” This may help explain sngbirds’ cntinuus singing.
由文章第五段“Adam’s cnclusin shws that “sngbirds need t exercise their vcal muscles t prduce tp-perfrmance sngs. If they dn’t sing, they lse perfrmance, and their sngs get less attractive t females.” This may help explain sngbirds’ cntinuus singing.

Ramirez Casta?eda, a Clmbian bilgist, spends her time in the Amazn studying hw snakes eat pisnus frgs withut getting ill. Althugh her findings cme in many shapes and sizes, she and her clleagues have struggled t get their bilgical discveries ut t the wider scientific cmmunity. With Spanish as her mther tngue, her research had t be translated int English t be published. That wasn’t always pssible because f budget r time-and it means that sme f her findings were never published.
“It’s nt that I’m a bad scientist,” she says. “It’s just because f the language.”
Casta?eda is nt alne. There is plenty f research in nn-English-language papers that gets lst in translatin, r is never translated. A research lked thrugh mre than 400, 000 peer-reviewed papers in 16 different languages and fund 1, 234 studies prviding evidence n bidiversity cnservatin which, because they weren’t in English, may have been verlked. These included Japanese-language findings n the effectiveness f relcating the endangered Blakistn’s fish wl, the largest wl species.
Sme experts argue that fr the sake f the bigger picture, scientific knwledge shuld cnverge (轉(zhuǎn)換) int ne cmmn language. Science is very glbalised and becming mre s, s the use f a glbal language is enrmus fr that.
Of curse, scientists can wrk with an English partner, r use a translatr-but this ultimately strengthens the cycle f dependency n the glbal nrth, leading t inequality in internatinal influence. The specific meanings f wrds can als pse a prblem in translatin. Fr example, it is difficult t find in English ne single wrd t describe frest snakes and frgs in the wrk Castafieda des with indigenus (土著的) cmmunities in the Amazn.

根據(jù)第一段“Ramirez Casta?eda, a Clmbian bilgist, spends her time in the Amazn studying hw snakes eat pisnus frgs withut getting ill. Althugh her findings cme in many shapes and sizes, she and her clleagues have struggled t get their bilgical discveries ut t the wider scientific cmmunity. With Spanish as her mther tngue, her research had t be translated int English t be published. 14. 根據(jù)第五段“Fr example, it is difficult t find in English ne single wrd t describe frest snakes and frgs in the wrk Castafieda des with indigenus (土著的) cmmunities in the Amazn.(例如,在Castafieda對亞馬遜土著社區(qū)所做的工作中,很難用英語找到一個詞來描述森林中的蛇和青蛙)”可知,作者以該詞為例,旨在說明翻譯一些科學(xué)研究中的文本存在挑戰(zhàn)。故選C項。
根據(jù)最后一段““S we’re lsing bservatins fr science, t, ” says Casta?eda. “Fr me, it’s nt pssible t just have everything translated int English. We need multilingual (多語種的) science, and we need peple that feel cmfrtable ding science in their wn languages. It culd be pssible t switch t a wrld where, say, Chinese, English and Spanish are the three languages f science, just as English, French and German were the languages f science in the 19th century.”(“所以我們也在失去科學(xué)觀測,”Casta?eda說。 故選A項。
