Grwing up in Ethipia, Bekele fund in pity that peple wrking utside were likely t end up getting skin cancer.Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in mst cases.Hwever, the average price f skin cancer treatment glbally was almst $40,000.Thse shcking statistics really inspired him t create a mre accessible slutin. He started ding experiments and wrking n different things, and that turned int his bar f sap as a prject.
A lt f his research and develpment started in his family's kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final f the cmpetitin, he realized that he did need t d a little bit mre utside f just his huse.S he reached ut t peple at University f Virginia and peple at Gergetwn, and he gt a lt f assistance. The number ne persn wuld be Debrah Isabelle, wh helped him rganize and structure his ideas during the finalist cmpetitin.Bekele said that he definitely culdn't have dne that all by himself.
Bekele's award-winning sap is a cmpund based bar f sap and it's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The clr f the sap is a bit f a dark type f white and it has a rugh surface, which culd be a gd exfliant(去角質(zhì)劑).It des have a strng medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whle pint f it is that even nce yu wash ff the saps, the medicinal parts will stay n yur skin.It can activate the bdy's immune cells t defend cancer.

If yu've ever waded int the cean fr a swim and suddenly realized that the shre is getting farther away, nt clser, yu may have encuntered a rip current (離岸流). Cmmn at beaches wrldwide, these pwerful currents flw frm the shre tward the sea at speeds up t several feet per secnd.
It's imprtant t knw what rip currents are and hw t lk fr them, because they are a leading cause f drwnings in the surf zne near shre. Rip currents can frm in several ways. One type f rip current, knwn as a channel rip current, frms when there are gaps between breaking waves. As waves break, they push water tward the beach and raise the level f the water slightly. If waves break n a sandbar (沙洲), but nt in a deeper channel that cuts thrugh the sandbar, the extra water that the waves have pushed tward the beacn escapes back t the cean thrugh the channel. The darker crridr f the escaping water acts like a cnveyr belt, mving water, unsuspecting swimmers and small marine rganisms ffshre.
Anther type, knwn as a transient r flash rip current, frms when surf is chppy (波濤洶涌的). The edges f breaking waves push n the water and make it spin, like a fast ice skater crashing int smene.
Think f a rip current as a swift river cutting thrugh the surf away frm the shre. Swimming against the current is ging t tire yu ut and put yu at risk f drwning. Instead, swim parallel t the beach—think f heading fr the "river banks"—until yu are ut f the rip current's pull. Once yu're n lnger fighting it, yu can swim back t shre.
Rip currents aren't just a safety issue. Scientists are beginning t better understand the crucial eclgical rle they play in the cean. Many marine rganisms, including ysters, barnacles, fish and cral, rely n cean currents t find suitable habitats. These rganisms swim up r dwn r attach t flating r sinking material and are transprted by multiple cean prcesses. Rip currents are a key mechanism fr carrying larvae (幼體) t deeper waters r recalculating them in shallw waters. The type and behavir f the rip current may affect the mvement f marine rganisms.
8. What can we learn abut channel rip currents accrding t the text? A . They cause a bit huger waves than cmmn currents. B . They frm arund deeper channels in the cean's bttm. C . They present visually as darker areas between breaking waves. D . They are generated when tw waves meet clse t the shre.
9. What des the underlined wrd "transient" in paragraph 3 prbably mean? A . Dangerus. B . Pwerful. C . Slw-flwing. D . Shrt-lived.
10. What suggestin des the authr give n escaping frm a rip current? A . Swimming with the current. B . Aviding swimming against the current. C . Swimming under the current. D . Aviding flating with the current.
11. Why are rip currents imprtant t the cean eclgy? A . They redistribute small marine rganisms. B . They prvide habitats fr marine rganisms. C . They change the structure f marine ecsystems. D . They bring nutrients frm the cean's bttm t the surface.

A new internatinal rganizatin, ReShark, including partners frm 15 cuntries and 44 aquariums, is challenging the shark statistics. Accrding t Natinal Gegraphic, ReShark's gal is t release 500 endangered zebra sharks in Indnesian waters t increase a wild ppulatin that is n the edge f extinctin. This is the first-ever attempt t reintrduce captive sharks int the wild.
Marine reintrductins present significant challenges due t the cmplexity and shrtage f cean life, as well as the difficulty in managing threats, accrding t Natinal Gegraphic. Team ReShark understands that the reintrductin may g up in smke. Unlike land animals that have been successfully reintrduced in the past, such as giant pandas in China, yung sharks are mre likely t suffer frm diseases and be killed by ther animals, and they struggle t find fd n their wn.
Sharks have a remarkable histry as ne f the ldest vertebrate species, surviving five mass extinctins ver a perid f 420 millin years. They play an imprtant rle in marine ecsystems by influencing the cean's fd chains. Hwever, they are nw facing the secnd-highest rate f disappearance. Research shws that mre than 37 percent f the shark species are at risk f extinctin due t verfishing, bth legal and illegal. Sharks are hunted fr their meat. Nearly 100 millin sharks are killed by human hands each year, accrding t the rganizatin Sentient Media.
Despite the alarming decline in shark ppulatins glbally, tp shark scientists are hpeful that ReShark's effrts will succeed. Given these challenges, Simn Fraser University eclgist Dulvy initially had sme dubts abut ReShark's plans. Hwever, after asking sme questins, he was surprised by what the initiative culd prduce. "This initiative is different," Dulvy explained. Similarly, Rima Jabad, Dulvy's successr, recgnized ReShark as a unique prject that culd prvide a lifeline fr endangered shark species. "It may prvide an pprtunity fr species nt t g extinct," she said.
12. What's the ReShark's intentin f releasing sharks? A . T cnduct shark data cllectin. B . T study the living habits f sharks. C . T save the endangered shark species. D . T test new ways f keeping sharks.
13. What des the underlined part "g up in smke" in Paragraph 2 prbably mean? A . Disappear. B . Fail. C . Wrk. D . Influence.
14. Hw des the Paragraph 3 develp? A . By giving examples. B . By giving descriptins. C . By making cmparisn. D . By making classificatins.
15. What des Rima Jabad think f ReShark's prject? A . Special and prmising. B . Hpeful and effrtless. C . Risky and cstly. D . Dubtful and immature.
