“Hallucinate” — the Wrd f 2023
Cambridge Dictinary has named “hallucinate” as the wrd f the year fr 2023 — while giving it an added new meaning relating t AI (artificial intelligence) technlgy.
The added Cambridge Dictinary definitin (定義) reads: “ When an AI hallucinates, it prduces false infrmatin, which can vary (變化) frm suggestins that seem perfectly believable t nes that are clearly nn-sense. ”
Wendalyn Nichls, Cambridge Dictinary’s publishing manager, said: “ The fact that AIs can ‘hallucinate’ reminds us that humans still need t bring their critical (批判的) thinking skills t the use f these tls. AIs can draw ut specific infrmatin we need frm huge amunts and piece it tgether. That’s amazing. But they just stp there. The mre riginal (原創(chuàng)的) yu ask them t be, the likelier they are t g wrng. ”
Actually, at their best, AIs can nly be as dependable as their training infrmatin. Humans’ prfessinal knwledge is mre imprtant than ever, t create the truthful and up-t-date infrmatin that AIs can be trained n.
AIs can hallucinate in a cnfident and thus mre misleading manner. Their influences have been shwn in real-wrld examples. In Ggle’s advertisement fr its chatbt Bard, the AI tl made an errr abut the James Webb Space Telescpe. A US law cmpany used cases made up by AIs in curt after using ChatGPT fr legal research.
“The widespread use f the wrd ‘hallucinate’ t refer t mistakes by AIs ffers us a quick lk at hw we’re treating them as ur equals,” said Dr Henry, an AI ethicist at Cambridge University. “‘Hallucinate’ is riginally a verb suggesting smene experiencing a discnnect frm reality,” he cntinued. “It mirrrs an unnticeable change in perceptin (認(rèn)知): the AI, nt the user, is the ne ‘ hallucinating ’”. It seems that as time prgresses, psychlgical vcabulary will be further enlarged t describe the strange abilities f the new intelligences we’re creating.
28. What can be learned abut the false infrmatin AIs prduce?
A. It desn’t make any sense t us.B. We didn’t knw abut it until 2023.
C. It happens because f AIs’ limitatin.D. We invented a new wrd t describe it.
29. What may be the key t training AIs?
A. The infrmatin they’re ffered. B. The way they’re trained in.
C. The human experts they wrk with. D. The thinking skills they use.
30. Why des the authr mentin Ggle’s advertisement in paragraph 5?
A. T intrduce a new tpic. B. T prve an established fact.
C. T cmpare the effects AIs prduce. D. T list AIs’ different applicatins.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The prper way t treat AIs.
