Like many new graduates, I left university full f hpe fr the future but with n real idea f what I wanted t d. My degree, with hnrs, in English literature had nt really prepared me fr anything practical. I knew I wanted t make a difference in the wrld smehw, but I had n idea hw t d that. That’s when I learned abut the Lighthuse Prject.
I started my jurney as a Lighthuse Prject vlunteer by reading as much as I culd abut the experiences f previus vlunteers. I knew it wuld be a lt f hard wrk, and that I wuld be away frm my family and friends fr a very lng time. In shrt, I did nt take my decisin t apply fr the Lighthuse Prject lightly. Neither did my family.
Eventually, hwever, I wn the supprt f my family, and I sent in all the paperwrk needed fr the applicatin. After cuntless interviews and presentatins, I managed t stand ut amng the candidates and survive the test alne. Several mnths later, I finally received a call asking me t reprt fr duty. I wuld be ging t a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had n idea. But I was abut t find ut.
After cmpleting my training, I was sent t the village that was small and desperately in need f prper accmmdatin. Thugh the lcal villagers were pr, they ffered their hmes, fd, and hearts as if I were their wn family. I was asked t lead a small team f lcal peple in building a new schlhuse. Fr the next year r s, I taught in that same schlhuse. But I smetimes think I learned mre frm my students than they did frm me.
Smetime during that perid, I realized that all thse things that had seemed s strange r unusual t me n lnger did, thugh I did nt get anywhere with the lcal language, and returned t the United States a different man. The Lighthuse Prject had changed my life frever.

Drught is an increasing prblem in ur warming wrld. All cntinents have been experiencing mre extended perids withut rain, leading t frest fires and pr crp grwth. Cnsequently, peple are lking at clud seeding t slve the prblem—a methd f encuraging precipitatin(降水) by sending small particles f certain chemicals int cluds.
Clud-seeding expert Arlen Huggins has been studying its effectiveness. "My earliest experience was t use clud seeding t reduce the amunt f hail (冰雹) in nrtheast Clrad. We didn't have any luck with that, but we had success later n in increasing snwfall in Utah. Nw, the fcus is shifting twards increasing rainfall frm summer cluds, which is far mre unpredictable." said he.
The prblem is that it's pretty hard t knw whether precipitatin resulted directly frm clud seeding. It might have rained r snwed anyway. Even if yu practice clud seeding in ne place and dn't in anther, it's impssible t knw fr sure what caused the precipitatin. "As clud seeding is expensive and its effectiveness uncertain, its usefulness is still a matter f pinin," says Katja Friedrich, a researcher f University f Clrad.
Additinally, it's nt during fggy and snwy cnditins that peple think f increasing the chance f rainfall. When a cuntry is hit by drught, then clud seeding isn't an ptin due t the lack f cluds. During drught, skies tend t be clear with few cluds. The best ptin t prevent drught is t seed at times f the year when rainfall levels are nrmal r higher.
There are als envirnmental issues regarding the impact f clud seeding. At high levels, the chemicals sent int the cluds can harm humans and ther animals, and sme studies have fund them slightly pisnus. Apart frm that, sme envirnmentalists are cncerned abut the lng-term impacts, as there isn't data n hw much thse chemicals accumulate in the envirnment ver 10 years.
28.What is the purpse f clud seeding?
A. T increase grain utput.B. T slw dwn glbal warming.
C. T reduce chemicals in the air.D. T deal with dry and rain-free weather.
29.Hw is Arlen Huggins' earliest experience in Paragraph 2?

30.What is Katja Friedrich's attitude twards clud seeding?
A. Favurable. B. Oppsed.C. Unclear. D. Dubtful.
31.What can be inferred frm the text?
A. Drught currently pses the nly t hreat t frests and crps.
B. Rainmaking in any weather will cme true in the near future.
C. Researchers nw can nt tell if rainfall is brught by clud seeding.
D. Chemicals sent int the cluds will becme less pisnus ver time.
What des it mean t be intelligent? If it’s defined by having the biggest brain, then sperm whales (抹香鯨) — whse brain is 20 punds — wuld be the brightest creatures n Earth. But, mre likely, it’s hw a brain is wired. Viewed in this way, intelligence is what gives an rganism the best chance t survive in an envirnment. Language may be ne f the best ways t demnstrate that kind f smarts.
“Language allwing humans t be a mre advanced species is a hypthesis that smebdy came up with ne day withut really trying t prve it,” says Erich Jarvis, a prfessr wh studies the neur-bilgy f vcal learning. “The idea stuck arund, but s have ther cmmn beliefs that are nt really supprted with evidence,” he pints ut.
T get a better grasp f vcal learning and cgnitin, the study authrs turned t sngbirds. The team perfrmed seven cgnitive experiments n 214 sngbirds frm 23 different species. Of these, 21 species were caught frm the wild. The rest tw studied are dmesticated (家養(yǎng)的). The behaviral tests examined the birds’ prblem slving, fr instance, figuring ut hw t remve an bject t access the fd reward. The researchers als tested tw ther skills ften assciated with intelligence: learning by assciatin, plus what’s called reversal (倒轉的) learning, in which an animal adjusts its behavir t get a reward. They then lked at whether being vcal learners helped develp the three skills, cmparing 21 bird species t tw thers which were nn-vcal learners.
Jarvis’ new study prvides sme f the first evidence that vcal learning — ne f the crucial cmpnents fr a spken language — is assciated with prblem slving. Vcal learning bird species culd cme up with innvative ideas, such as getting seeds, r catching a wrm trapped under a cup by remving the bstacle r pulling it apart. All three abilities — prblem slving, assciative learning, and reversal learning — are typically cnsidered “cmpnents f intelligence,” he says.
“One questin left unanswered is why there’s such a strng relatinship between prblem-slving abilities and vcal learning. The brain areas in charge f vcal learning are nt the same nes that get activated when we need t trublesht (分析解決) an issue,” says Michael Gldstein, a prfessr f psychlgy at Crnell University wh studies vcal learning in sngbirds and humans but was nt invlved in the study.
32.Which can prbably define intelligence accrding t Paragraph 1?

34.What are Paragraphs 3&4 mainly abut?
A. Habits f sngbirds.B. Methds f dmesticating sngbirds.
C. Outline f the study.D. Three phases f displaying intelligence.
35.What may the text talk abut next?
A. The mechanism that bridges all the brain regins.
B. The functins f the brain areas that can trublesht issues.
C. The reasns why sngbirds’ intelligence can nt develp further.
D. The reasns why vcal learning influence prblem-slving abilities.
