Lima, the capital f Peru, is the wrld’s secnd largest desert city. The regin is water-stressed. The annual rainfall is less than 4 cm. Access t water is an nging prblem fr the residents in and arund the Suth American capital.
When industrial engineer Abel Cruz was a by, his weekly wrk was t climb dwn a valley in the fthills f the Peruvian Andes t fetch the family’s water frm a spring. “It was dwnhill frm the huse, far away and steep,” he says. Cruz began dreaming up better ways t cllect water. Then he nticed that subtrpical plants capture rain and mist with their wide leaves. Actually Lima desn’t lack in humidity (濕度), averaging 83% year-rund. Lcated in the fthills f the Andean muntains, it is clse t the Pacific Ocean, which ensures that blankets f thick fg rll in fr three-quarters f a year. Eventually, Abel Cruz struck upn the idea f a fg net.
Each upraised net is 20 square meters, where micr drps f water flating in the fggy atmsphere cndense (凝結(jié)) and drp int cllectin tanks. Apprximately 200 t 400 litres f water is cllected daily frm each net. Lcals can fetch it in buckets fr small-scale farming. Wrking in Lima with supprt frm the Creating Water Fundatin, Cruz has installed ver 3, 600 nets n hillsides arund the city t capture fg flating in frm the Pacific Ocean. Cruz raised funds fr hundreds f nets in Peru with his revlutinary initiative Peruvians Withut Water. He aims t set up even mre fg harvesters, and t treat the water t make it drinkable.
“The planet has less and less fresh water,” Cruz pints ut, “because the glaciers that are natural reservirs are disappearing. S we must find a way t accumulate and save water fr times f drught.” The technlgy is life-changing fr the pr husehlds wh nrmally have t rely n water tanks being delivered t them. His apprach ends extreme pverty and brings rural develpment. Mrever, he is trying t bring healthy and clean water als t urban areas lacking water.

Search “txic parents”, and yu’ll find mre than 38, 000 psts, largely urging yung adults t cut ties with their families. The idea is t safeguard ne’s mental health frm ffensive parents. Hwever, as a psychanalyst (精神分析學(xué)家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years becme a way t manage cnflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement (疏遠(yuǎn)) has n bth sides f the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.
“Canceling” yur parent can be seen as an extensin f a cultural trend aimed at crrecting imbalances in pwer and systemic inequality. Tday’s scial justice values respnd t this reality, calling n us t criticize ppressive and harmful figures and t gain pwer fr thse wh have been pwerless. But when adult children use the mst effective tl they have—themselves—t gain a sense f security and ban their parents frm their lives, the rles are simply switched, and the pain nly deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases f family cnflict mismanaged, pwer dynamics turned upside dwn rather than negtiated. I see the terrible effect f that trend: situatins with n winners, nly islated humans wh lng t be knwn and feel safe in the presence f the ther.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are nt suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel abandned and betrayed, because in the uncnscius, it desn’t matter wh is ding the leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghsts f their childhd, tackling the emtinal reality that thse wh raised us can never truly be left behind, n matter hw hard we try.
What I have fund is that mst f these families need repair, nt permanent break-up. Hw can ne learn hw t negtiate needs, t create bundaries and t trust? Hw can we lve thers, and urselves, if nt thrugh accepting the limitatins that cme with being human? Gd relatinships are nt the result f a perfect level f harmny but rather f successful adjustments.
T pursue dialgue instead f estrangement will be hard and painful wrk. It can’t be a single prject f “self-help”, because at the end f the day, real intimacy (親密關(guān)系) is achieved by wrking thrugh the injuries f the past tgether. In mst cases f family cnflict, repair is pssible and preferable t estrangement—and it’s wrth the wrk.
28. Why d yung peple cut ties with the family?
A.T gain an independent life. B.T fllw a tendency twards scial justice.
C.T restre harmny in the family.D.T prtect their psychlgical well-being.
29. What des the underlined wrd “catch” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Respnse.B.Prblem.C.Bnd.D.Divisin.
30. T manage family cnflict, what shuld yung adults d in the authr’s view?
A.Break dwn bundaries.B.Accept imperfectin f family members.
C.Live up t their parents’ expectatins.D.Repair a family item that has brken up.
31. What’s the authr’s purpse f writing the text?
A.T advcate a self-help trend.B.T justify a cmmn scial value.
C.T argue against a current practice.D.T discuss a means f cmmunicatin.

Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer the questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is the essential nature f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw clearly different views f humanity. The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving. Thse wh frgive are against their basic nature, much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hatred and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are distant accept yur lve and frgiveness and are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a classical philsphical perspective, that f Aristtle, we see the distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving—its actual apprpriateness in cnflict situatins—develps with practice.
32. What is Drll’s idea abut frgiveness?
A.Peple shuld ffer mercy t thers.
B.Aggressive peple shuld learn t frgive.
C.Frgiveness depends n the nature f humanity.
D.Peple wh frgive can have their wn welfare affected.
33. What des the example in paragraph 2 illustrate?
A.T frgive is t lve.B.T give is t receive.
C.T dminate is t harm.D.T cperate is t cnnect.
34. What is the writer’s attitude tward frgiveness?
A.Favrable. B.Ambiguus. C.Objective. D.Skeptical.
35. What message is cnveyed in the last paragraph?
A.Frgiveness is in ur nature.B.It takes practice t frgive.
C.Frgiveness grws with time. D.Actuality is based n ptentiality.
