In their search fr “suth”, sme ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thught, was a guide.
Fritz decided he wuld teach the birds a new, safer migratin rute by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was cnfident he culd succeed in this daring, uncnventinal plan- because he had dne it befre. “Arund that time, the mvie 'Fly Away Hme' was a huge hit with us bilgists,” Fritz says. When he annunced that he'd d the same with the ibises, he was initially laughed at. But Fritz didn't give up. He mdified an ultralight aircraft s it wuld travel at speeds slw enugh fr his winged students t keep up. He had been his yung pupils' nly prvider f fd, lve and hugs since they were just a few days ld, and the ibises eagerly fllwed their teacher, wh just happened t pilt a fairly nisy machine.

In recent years American sciety has becme increasingly dependent n its universities t find slutins t its majr prblems. It is the universities that have been t blame fr develping the expertise t place men n the mn; fr dealing with ur urban prblems and with ur wrsening envirnment; fr develping the means t feed the wrld's rapidly increasing ppulatin. The effrt invlved in meeting these demands presents its wn prblems. In additin, this cncentratin n the creatin f new knwledge significantly impacts the universities' effrts t perfrm their ther principal functins, the transmissin and interpretatin f knwledge-the teaching f the heritage f the past and the preparing f the next generatin t carry it frward.
With regard t this, perhaps their mst traditinally acknwledged task, clleges and universities tday find themselves in a serius bind generally. On the ne hand, there is the American cmmitment, made especially since Wrld War II, t prvide higher educatin fr all yung peple wh can prfit frm it. The result f the cmmitment has been a dramatic rise in enrllments (登記入學(xué)) in ur universities, cupled with a striking shift frm the private t the public sectr f higher educatin.
On the ther hand, there are serius and cntinuing limitatins n the resurces available fr higher educatin. While higher educatin has becme a great “grwth industry”, it is als a tremendus drain (耗竭) n the resurces f natin. With the vast increase in enrllment and the shift in pririties away frm educatin in state and federal (聯(lián)邦的) budgets, there is in mst f ur public institutins a significant decrease in expense fr each student. One crucial aspect f this drain n resurces lies in the persistent shrtage f trained teachers, which has led, in turn, t a declining standard f cmpetence in instructin.
Intensifying these difficulties is, as indicated abve, the cncern with research, with its increasing claims n resurces and the attentin f the teachers. In additin, there is a strng tendency fr the institutins' rganizatin and functin t fulfill the demands f research rather than thse f teaching.
32. Accrding t Paragraph 1, what shuld be the mst imprtant functin f American universities?
A. Sparing n effrt t create new knwledge fr students.
B. Enhancing students' cmpetence f tackling scial prblems.
C. Making experts n advanced industries ut f their students.
D. Preparing their students t transmit the knwledge f the past.
33. In American universities, there is a cntradictin between
A. mre students and less investment B. educatin quality and ecnmic prfit
C. lw enrllment rate and high educatin demand D. private wnership and American cmmitment
34. A serius utcme brught abut by the shrtage f resurces is that
A. many public institutins have t cut dwn enrllments f students
B. teachers are nt cmpetent enugh t perfrm satisfactrily in class
C. sme institutins are frced t reduce the ttal expenses n research
D. there is keen cmpetitin fr resurces between public and private institutins
35. What wrsened the severity f the prblems faced by American universities?
A. The imprper distributin f American universities' resurces.
B. The increasing argument ver American universities' primary task.
C. The inability f American universities' rganizatin and fulfillment.
D. The grwing fcus n American universities' functin f research.

My bdy was as frzen as a snwman. “Cme n!” My sister’s face was as white as the paint n the wall. I shved the headphnes back in the bx but my hands were shaking s much that I tre the paper trying t wrap it back up. My sister was yelling at me, which nly made my hands shake mre. Our secret was seemingly safe, but smehw that Christmas mrning didn’t feel the same. What we had dne spiled my mther’s riginal plan f giving us a surprise, and even ruined ur festive atmsphere f Christmas. Frm then n, my sister and I never pened ur Christmas presents early again, because each wrapped gift is a carrier f family lve, which shuld be unwrapped at a prper time.
