The class clapped.But I didn’t want t have a secnd lk at the newcmer,fr he had n utstanding qualities cnsidering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh,I frgt t mentin ne thing,”Ms.Sullivan spke up.“Rafael actually has hearing prblems.Nrmally he wuld have hearing aids n,but his ld nes have just been brken.His dctr suggested that he stay at hme until he gt his new nes.Hwever,Rafael insisted n attending his first day f schl.S if yu want t cmmunicate with him,yu have t write it n a piece f paper.”
This single speech sent the whle class up int an uprar (嘈雜).Sme students lked at each ther with expressins f surprise.Others viced cries f cncern ut f pity.
Ms.Sullivan calmed everyne dwn.“I’d like smene t persnally help him ut thrughut the day.D I have any vlunteers?”
“Hw can a disabled persn be intelligent?” I thught t myself.I refused t raise my hand,expecting smene else wuld.But nbdy did r said anything.Dead silence spread acrss the classrm.
It was by ttal bad luck that my eyes happened t meet Ms.Sullivan’s.
“Hw abut yu,James?” She asked me.“Is it kay fr yu t take care f Rafael just fr tday?”
It is difficult t refuse a request by smene,especially if that persn is a teacher.I sighed and ndded gestured fr Rafael t sit beside me and then asked us t share ur hliday stries with the class.
