Frm the mment I picked up a camera in cllege, I fell in lve with it. I lst interest in ther studies, and all I wanted t d was take pictures fr the university newspaper, the Minnesta Daily. In six mnths, I was able t get a lt f great experience.

By sme miracle I was hired, and the tw-year experience that fllwed was like a master class in phtjurnalism. I wrked with a wnderful writer named Paul Gruchw. Tgether we wuld search the farming cmmunities fr stries. Frm Paul I learned hw t be a patient listener, as well as the imprtance f giving each subject time and sincere attentin.
A year later, I wrk ed fr Bb ——Natinal Gegraphic’s legendary directr f phtgraphy. Wherever Itraveled in the wrld, taking beautiful pictures was always my gal. Hwever, later in my career, I wanted my pictures t make a real difference in peple's lives. That is why each spring I tur tw r three develping cuntries, shting prtraits f peple whse lives are better because f the dedicated wrkers wh care abut them. The phts are used in a variety f fund-raising prducts. The ther issue that stle my heart was the envirnment. With supprt frm the Natinal Gegraphic Expeditin s Cuncil, I have traveled all ver the United States t phtgraph the last ne percent f wilderness left here.
I am deeply grateful fr my life in phtgraphy and the amazing lessns it has taught me. I have learned that wmen really d hld up half the sky; that language isn't always necessary, but tuch usually is; that all peple are nt alike , but they d mstly have the same hpes and fears; that judging thers des great harm, but listening t them enriches; and that it is impssible t hate a grup f peple nce yu get t knw ne f them as an individual.

Abatandaballcst$$ yu answered 10 cents, yu're nt alne mst peple give the same answer (the crrect answer is 5 cents.)
It's an example f hw we ften rely n intuitive answers answers we feel are true. Peple give answers that pp int their mind, says cgnitive (認(rèn)知的) scientist Steven Slman. We dn't spend much time reflecting and checking whether the answer is right r wrng.
The bat and ball questin helps explain why we ften believe in fake news. It is part f human nature t believe, says Slman. But “the trick with fake news is t knw t verify”——in ther wrds, t stp and questin what yu knw.
In ne experiment, Slman and a clleague invented a discvery called helium rain. They tld a grup f vlunteers abut it, but admitted they culd nt fully explain what it was. They then asked the vlunteers t rate their wn understanding f helium rain. Mst vlunteers rated themselves 1 ut f 7, meaning they did nt understand the cncept. The researchers then tld anther grup f vlunteers abut the discvery. This time, they said that scientists culd fully explain hw it wrks. When asked t rate their understanding, the vlunteers gave an average answer f 2. The scientists’ cnfidence gave the vlunteers an increased sense f their wn understanding. Accrding t Slman, studies shw that knwledge spreads like a cntagin.
Anther explanatin fr the spread f fake news is “mtivated reasning”, writes Adam Waytz, a management prfessr at the Kellgg Schl. We are naturally mre likely t believe things that cnfirm ur existing pinins.
S, in a wrld where misleading infrmatin is cmmn, is there a way t prtect urselves? “Thugh it's impssible t verify everything that peple encunter, training peple t care abut fact -checking is imprtant, especially in nline cmmunities.” says Slman, “Develp an atmsphere where we shuld check things and nt just take them at face value. Verify it befre yu believe.”

“Half f the city has been destryed. My mm's relatives, my friends, my cwrkers ——they are all gne. Nw we, the survivrs, are just ghst s in shells,” says Bujeldain, whse sadness can be easily tld frm her blank expressin.
Five days have passed since the terrible flding in Derna, Libya's Red Crescent rganizatin estimated that11,300 peple have died, while the city's mayr believes the number f deaths culd be as high as 20,000.
Derna is a castal city with a seasnal river called the Wadi Derna. Despite the abnrmally heavy rain, peple living near the river had little warning befre the fldwaters came rushing in n that terrible mrning. United Natins aid chief Martin Griffiths described the scale f the fld as “appalling”(令人驚駭?shù)? and blamed the fld partly n sudden climate change.
Nw internatinal aid teams are arriving in Derna, but they face challenges due t damaged rads, lack f access t pwer, water, and fuel. Tarhni, dctr f the rescue team, warns that the mst difficult weeks li e ahead. “One disaster is dne and there is anther t cme,” he says. “The thusands and thusands f peple wh lst everything these peple nw need cmfrt, they need cmpany, they need psychlgical supprt.”

In English, grwn-ups ften say that babies make “g g ga ga” sunds. In French, it's “areau areau”, and in Chinese, it's “yi yi ya ya”. S, d babies really make different sunds in different parts f the wrld?
Prfessr Sundara at UCLA, wh cnducts research n hw babies listen befre they start speaking and hw they learn languages, finds that when babies first begin t babble (咿呀學(xué)語) at arund 6 mnths ld, they all make similar sunds, even deaf babies. Afterward, they begin t cpy the sunds f the language they are expsed t. Babies, it seems, are skilled at cpying the language they hear.
Sundara als studies hw babies react t hearing different languages. In bilingual(雙語的) families, babies adjust their babble depending n the language they are respnding t. She cnducted an experiment where, at the start, participating babies, wh were 9 r 10 mnths ld, culd nly babble in a way that sunded like English. After spending a little time with a Spanish-speaking research assistant, the babies were able t make changes t their babbling t match Spanish sunds.
Babies pssess this remarkable ability t learn languages due t smething called enhanced neurplasticity, meaning their brains are exceptinally adaptable: if a baby regularly hears different languages, they can react t all f them. That heightened ability t learn language lasts until children are arund 5 years ld with sme lingering language superpwers lasting until age 12. Therefre, speaking mre than ne languages has cgnitive and scial benefits, and the idea that trying t learn tw languages at nce wuld cnfuse babies has been prved prved false.
S, while my baby is nt yet walking and insists n scting (快速移動(dòng)) backward n his bttm while making strange sunds, I knw that his brain is accmplishing incredible things.

B. T settle a majr, disagreement.
C. T lead int the further research.
D. T cmpare different languages.

B. Babble patterns can change in different situatins.
C. All babies prduce similar babbles shrtly after birth.
D. Yung babies' language abilities develp as they grw.
38. Which f the fllwing ideas wuld the authr agree with?
A. Parents shuld stick t ne language at hme t avid cnfusin.
B. Speaking as many languages t babies as pssible is highly recmmended.
C. Parents shuld encurage babies t sct backward t help their brains develp.
D. Enhanced neurplasticity can help a middle schl student master a freign language.
39. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Baby Babble: Nt Just G G Ga Ga
B. Baby Babble: A Cgnitive and Scial Superpwer
C. Enhanced Neurplasticity: An Advanced Brain Functin
D. Enhanced Neurplasticity: The Secret t Language Learning
