I jined the cast guard because I wanted t help peple. Hvercraft(氣墊船)are rare and special. They’ve been discntinued in mst cmmercial peratin, because they are s expensive t make, but when it cmes t search and rescue, they’re priceless.
Frm far away, a hvercraft lks like a nrmal bat. But if yu lk under its skirt, the craft is nt tuching the water — it flats n a cushin f air. That cushin allws us t travel ver everything frm water t muddy land — and even break thrugh ice. We d all f that as a 70-tnne machine, ging a maximum f nearly 120 kilmeters per hur. These features allw us t rescue a large number f peple quickly get nt land, and get smene int an ambulance far easier than with any ther device I can think f.
The advantages f hvercraft can als make them difficult t handle. We’ve gt a massive vehicle mving fast, smetimes in a thick fg bank up a narrw river. During assignments n ther cast guard ships, I had 20 minutes t make alteratins t avid a crash. In a hvercraft, I have 10 secnds. Yu have t have enugh situatinal awareness t make the right decisin every time.
Peple call us fr all srts f prblems: missing divers, n-bard fires, r even when they’ve run ut f fuel r had a mechanical breakdwn. A cntainer ship culd burst int flames. We have a strng netwrk here at the base t help everyne thrugh difficult situatins like that. Thankfully, we have captains wh train us in a safe envirnment, but yu dn’t ever get fully cmfrtable. Anything can thrw the hvercraft ff — maybe yur lift settings are ff a little, r the wind blws with a bit f extra weight. After several years perating a hvercraft, I’m still learning. Every ne f the captains here agrees: yu can drive this thing fr 20 years and still be surprised.
24. What makes hvercraft unsuitable fr cmmercial use?
A. Their safety risks.B. Their pr durability.C. Their lw efficiency.D. Their prductin csts.
25. What is paragraph2 mainly abut?

26. What challenge d hvercraft pse t the pilt?

B. They ften face mechanical breakdwns.
C. They need mre peple fr decisin making.
D. They must cnsider the envirnmental cncerns.
27. What des the authr think f perating a hvercraft?

If sales generally feel hard t t resist, the sale in frnt f Aarrn Schurevich was the ultimate test: new Kia Sul just like the ne he’d had and lved, at a dealership he trusted, at a mment when he really needed a car. And it was priced $4,000 ff mre than a 20% discunt. Hwever, after he sped thrugh paperwrk and drve the car ff the lt, the deal turned sul. Schurevich nw jkes that he paid a tax fr being a fl.
This big-ticket example shws vividly all the dynamics that play ut in a sale. The discunt itself ften registers as a win, delivering the jy f bth getting the prduct and the reward that we discvered smething, and we’ve earned this extra thing. Thus, sptting smething we’d like t buy n sale activates ur brain’s reward system. Then there’s the fight in the brain between what can be described as its emtinal and ratinal(理性的)parts. A sale lands like the thumb that tips ur mental scale tward buying.
Stres, f curse, knw all this and try t push ur buttns.
Experts say we ften subcnsciusly believe ppular things t be mre valuable r mre rewarding. Plus, there’s ur urge t avid lses — the fear f missing ut (FOMO). S stres appeal t ur crwd mentality: It’s Black Friday, ana everyne’s shpping, buying that thing yu’d like. They create urgency: Yur favrite car is n sale tday nly! And they create scarcity: Shp nw while supplies last!
Stres als try varius pricing tricks. “Hw d we make mre custmers g t the mre expensive ptin? We add a decy,” says Savannah Wei Shi, wh researches pricing and decisin-making. Fr example, picture s stre shelf where a medium bag f candy sits next t a larger bag f the same candy. The medium-sized bag is much smaller than the ther bag, but nly slightly cheaper. It makes the big bag lk like the best deal, s shppers buy that ne-the mst expensive ptin n the shelf.
28. Why is Aarrn Schurevich’s stry mentined?
A. T illustrate why we fall fr a sale.B. T present hw ur brains are activated.
C. T stress the imprtance f ratinal decisin.D. T prve the flexibility f marketing strategies.
29. What can be inferred frm paragraph 4?
A. FOMO pstpnes decisins.B. Sales play n peple’s fears.
C. Subcnsciusness determines everything.D. Scarcity prmtin leads t wise purchases.
30. What marketing technique is used by warning abut the limited number f available seats left?
A. Using Pricing tricks.B. Dealing with emergencies.
C. Creating scarcity.D. Appealing t crwd mentality.
31. What des “a decy” refer t in paragraph 5?
A. A candy.B. A shelf.C. A larger bag.D. A medium bag.

Every year, as the surface water temperature ff the United States mid-Atlantic cast rises steadily frm late spring thrugh the summer, a pcket f uncharacteristically cl and crisp water gets trapped at the bttm f the cean. Packed with nutrients this thick band f cld water, knwn as the mid-Atlantic cld pl, is a vital hme fr shellfish species. Nw, hwever, tw pressures have scientists wrrying abut whether the cld pl will last. The first is n surprise: climate change. Over the past five decades, climates change has destabilized the cld pl, causing it t warm and shrink. Cmpared with 1968, the cld pl is nw 13℃ warmer and has lst mre than ne-third f its area.
The secnd cncern is 1ess certain. In 2023, the US federal gvernment apprved plans t install(安裝)98 wind turbines(渦輪機)ff the New Jersey cast, cvering an area f mre than 300 square kilmeters. Yet putting s many turbines t the seaflr culd have unexpected cnsequences fr the cld pl. That’s why Travis Miles, a researcher at New Jersey’s Rutgers University, and his clleagues are investigating. S far, Miles and his clleagues can’t definitively say what will happen t the cld pl, saying mre research is needed t assess hw climate change and ffshre wind, tgether, culd affect the cld pl. Hwever, their initial analyses suggest the cld pl shuld be fine — at least in nrmal cnditins.
New Jersey’s ffshre wind plans are strngly ppsed mainly by fssil fuel-industry funded effrts. Miles wrries that an verabundance f cautin r fear f ptential impacts, including n the cld pl, might slw dwn the develpment f renewable energy. “’s quite clear that climate change is far mre damaging than installing wind farms,” he says. “I dn’t think any scientist wuld argue with that.”
32. What d we knw abut the mid-Atlantic cld pl?
A. It frms in early spring.B. It’s a band f cld near-bttm water.
C. It serves as a habitat f mst sea species.D. It extends frm Nantucket t New Jersey.

A. Break dwn.B. Get plluted.C. Dry up.D. Becme smaller.
34. Miles’ attitude tward installing wind farms can be described as ______.
A. supprtiveB. dismissiveC. vercautiusD. skeptical
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. The Cld Pl Plays a Rle n species
B. Opinins Divide n Offshre Wind Farms
C. Scientists Eye Ptential Risks t the Cld Pl
D. Renewable Energy Helps t Race Against Climate Change
