In February 2022, I began learning Chinese. Almst a year later, I fund myself in Beijing, the capital f China. Befre cming here, I had attended Chinese classes, and I culd sense my prgress in the language, albeit mdest. As yu might expect, studying fr just ne year wasn't sufficient t claim fluency, and t be hnest, I'm nt there yet. The ne thing that truly makes me feel cmfrtable and alleviates lneliness is making friends and engaging in cnversatin. At Tsinghua University, where I pursued my studies in China, I made friends with many Chinese yung peple and relished spending time with them, be it fr meals r leisure activities. I've been delighted t sing Chinese sngs, fr example, thse by the famus Chinese singer Jay Chu, with my friends. I wuld als sing well-knwn Japanese sngs, such as Lemn, which, as it turns ut, is very ppular in China. I felt that cnnecting with my Chinese peers thrugh a shared passin, such as singing, was incredibly enjyable and beautiful. It transcended language barriers and fstered a sense f unity and jy that was truly special.
During breaks frm study, I frequently embarked n sl jurneys acrss China. Althugh I have experienced traveling n vernight trains fr ver 12 hurs several times and explred unfamiliar cities, I never felt fearful r
unwelcme as a freigner. Chinese peple are cnsistently warm and welcme t freigners, and eager t engage in cnversatin.
I nce participated in cmmunity activities in Nrthwest China's Gansu prvince t gain a deeper understanding f China's rural areas and cntribute t the develpment f lcal cmmunities and educatin. As a vlunteer teacher at a lcal schl, I shared cntemprary and traditinal Japanese culture such as anime, architecture, pp music and languages with the students. Since Japanese kanji riginated in China, there are many similarities between the Japanese and Chinese languages.

In 2018, Jeff Highsmith f Texas started a Facebk page n behalf f his family. The page had ne bjective: t find Melissa Highsmith, Jeff's sister. At just 21 mnths, she had been abducted 51 years earlier and the family was desperate fr answers.

They knew that mre tls were nw available t help lcate missing persns— such as genealgy kits with DNA tests. And s, the family bught kit s frm 23 and Me, and then upladed the results t a public database called GED match.
It seemed like a sht in the dark, but it wrked. In Nvember 2022, the Highsmith family fund Melissa thrugh a key DNA match: Melissa's daughter. By pulling the threads f DNA matches, they zered in n the baby snatched s lng ag. The family re unin was a jyful ne. Melissa described being fund as “the mst wnderful feeling in the wrld”.
The stry f Melissa Highsmith and her family gt glbal news cverage. But it's nly ne f many cases f peple being cnnected by DNA analysis. In Canada, siblings separately adpted frm Rmania when they were babies were reunited in their fifties when bth tk a DNA test t learn mre abut their bilgical health, and it turned ut they had spent much f their lives within a 30-minute drive f each ther. Anther tw sisters— ne in the UK, the ther in the Netherlands— met fr the first time in 75 years after learning that they had the same father. There are cuntless stries abut hw DNA was being used t reunite children with their parents.
Fr the Highsmith family, happily reunited in Texas after decades apart, DNA was the link. “Our finding Melissa was purely because f DNA, nt because f any plice invlvement, pdcast invlvement, cmmunities, r even ur family's wn private investigatins r speculatins,” ntes ne Facebk update.

Ancient builders acrss the wrld created structures that are still standing tday, thusands f years later.
Rman engineers built thick cncrete sea barriers, fr example. And Chinese builders raised walls against invaders.
But there are many recent structures that are already starting t fail. The cncrete that makes up much f ur mdern wrld lasts arund 50 t 100 years.
A grwing number f scientists have been studying materials frm lng ag. They are breaking apart pieces f buildings and reading histrical texts hping t learn hw they have std fr thusands f years. The research has turned up a surprising list f materials that were mixed int ld buildings. They include tree bark, vlcanic ash, rice, beer and even urine (尿液). These unexpected materials culd have the ability t get strnger ver time and "heal"
cracks when they frm.
Figuring ut hw t cpy these features culd have real impacts tday. While ur mdern cncrete has the strength t hld up very tall buildings and heavy infrastructure (基礎結構), it cannt cmpete with the endurance f these ancient materials. With the rising threats f climate change, there is a grwing call t make cnstructin mre sustainable. A recent UN reprt estimates that the built envirnment is respnsible fr mre than a third f carbn dixide emissins wrldwide. Cement (水泥) prductin alne makes up mre than 7 percent f thse emissins.
Is ancient Rman cncrete better? In places where seawater has been hitting structures fr ages, yu will find cncrete “basically the way it was when it was pured 2, 000 years ag,” said Jhn Olesn, an archaelgist at the University f Victria in Canada.
Mst mdern cncrete starts with Prtland cement, a pwder made by heating limestne (石灰?guī)r) and clay t super-high temperatures and breaking them up. That cement is mixed with water t create a paste. Then, materials like rck and gravel are added. Recrds frm ancient builders shw the Rman prcess was similar. The ancient builders mixed materials like burnt limestne and vlcanic sand with water and rcks, creating chemical reactins t tie everything tgether.
Nw, scientists think they have fund an imprtant reasn why sme Rman cncrete has held up structures fr thusands f years. The ancient material has an unusual pwer t repair itself. Exactly hw is nt yet clear, s scientists are starting t find reasns why.
