Emtins, thughts and ideas. We use language t transfrm abstract ideas int cncrete ( 具體的) cmmunicatin tls. Hw culd we g ahead as a culture unless we shared a cmmn understanding fr ppular wrds in the English language, such as bk, friend r laugh, r uncmmn wrds like bibliklept r hirquiticke?
But that desn’t mean wrds dn’t fall ut f fashin. In 2021, nine wrds were decided as “histrical” and remved frm dictinaries. Aerdrme, fr example, was determined t be deleted frm the Merriam-Webster dictinary because nwadays we usually call airplane landing fields “airprts.”
S wh, exactly, makes the decisin t remve a wrd frm a dictinary?
The remval f dictinary wrds is left t lexicgraphers (詞典編撰者), wh nt nly decide which wrds t remve but als add new wrds and update changing definitins. Lexicgraphers als are respnsible fr adding new wrds. In 2022, fr example, “demisexual” and “vaxxed” were added t the Oxfrd English Dictinary.
Truth is, it’s actually quite difficult fr a wrd t lse its place in a dictinary. Lexicgraphers dn’t take wrd-remval lightly. When a wrd cmes int questin, dictinary editrs will first d series f nline surveys amng dictinary users. Editrs then will examine its meaning, usage and ppularity acrss many large language databases that cver a variety f frequently-used examples. Based n the survey results and cllected infrmatin, lexicgraphers will hld runds f frmal discussins and vte fr the final decisin. Often, wrds that are remved frm printed dictinaries are allwed t remain part f nline dictinaries.
Despite the careful wrd additin and remval prcess, dictinaries aren’t immune t mistakes. Fr a time, “redripening” appeared in mst dictinaries as ne wrd, when it actually shuld have been “red-ripening.”
28. Why was “aerdrme” remved frm the Merriam-Webster dictinary?
A. Its definitin was wrng.B. It was invented lng time ag.
C. It was decided by the editrs.D. It wasn’t applicable t mdern life.
29. Which f the fllwing best describes the wrd-remval prcess?
A. Strict.B. Creative.C. Painful.D. Natural.
30. Why is “redrippening” mentined in the last paragraph?
A. T intrduce a newly-remved wrd.
B. T stress the huge ppularity f this wrd.
C. T shw dictinaries smetimes make mistakes.
D. T reveal the disadvantage f the remval prcess.
31. What’s the suitable title fr the text?
A. Wh Are Lexicgraphers?B. Why Des a Dictinary Becme Outdated?
C. What Caused Wrds t Change?D. Hw Are Wrds Remved frm a Dictinary?
D 29. A 30. C 31. D

根據(jù)第二段“But that desn’t mean wrds dn’t fall ut f fashin. In 2021, nine wrds were decided as ‘histrical’ and remved frm dictinaries. Aerdrme, fr example, was determined t be deleted frm the Merriam-Webster dictinary because nwadays we usually call airplane landing fields ‘a(chǎn)irprts.’(但這并不意味著詞匯不會過時。2021年,有9個單詞被認定為‘歷史詞匯’,并被從詞典中刪除。例如,Aerdrme這個詞被決定從韋氏詞典中刪除,因為現(xiàn)在我們通常把飛機降落場稱為‘a(chǎn)irprts’)”可知,Aerdrme這個詞被刪除是因為它過時了,被認定是“歷史詞匯”,不適用于現(xiàn)代生活。故選D。
【29題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第五段內(nèi)容,尤其是前兩句“Truth is, it’s actually quite difficult fr a wrd t lse its place in a dictinary. Lexicgraphers dn’t take wrd-remval lightly.(事實上,一個單詞很難在字典中失去它的位置。詞典編纂者不會輕易刪除單詞)”和最后一段中“Despite the careful wrd additin and remval prces(盡管詞典在添加和刪除單詞的過程中小心翼翼)”可知,從字典中刪除單詞的過程非常嚴格。故選A。
最后一段中“Despite the careful wrd additin and remval prcess, dictinaries aren’t immune t mistakes.(盡管詞典在添加和刪除單詞的過程中小心翼翼,但也難免會出現(xiàn)錯誤)”提到字典中難免會出現(xiàn)錯誤,接著下句“Fr a time, ‘redripening’ appeared in mst dictinaries as ne wrd, when it actually shuld have been ‘red-ripening.’(有一段時間,‘redripening’作為一個單詞出現(xiàn)在大多數(shù)詞典中,而實際上它應該是‘red-ripening’)”以“redrippening”為例,表明字典有時也會犯錯。
根據(jù)全文內(nèi)容,結(jié)合第三段“S wh, exactly, makes the decisin t remve a wrd frm a dictinary?(那么,究竟是誰決定從字典中刪除一個單詞呢)”可知,文章主要講述字典刪除單詞的過程,D項“單詞是如何從字典中被刪除的?”
