Scientists at the University f Central Flrida(UCF) have created a new kind f paint that' s very light and very strng. The clrs in the new paint aren't at all like thse in mst paints. Instead, they 're mre like the clrs n a butterfly s wings.
The clrs in mst paints cme frm pigments( 色素) - -small amunts f clred things mixed int the paint.Fr hundreds f years, humans have been blending different minerals, metals r chemicals tgether t prduce different clrs f paint. But nature has anther way t create clr, called “ structural clr”. Structural clr cmes frm small shapes n the surfaces f things like wings r feathers. Nrmally ,we never see the shapes that create these clrs.
Researchers at Dr. Debashis Chanda's lab at UCF weren’t really planning n making paint. They were trying t create a special mirrred surface. But they fund super-tiny clumps(簇) f aluminum atms(鋁原子) n the surface. They realized that these clumps made clrs when light hit them. S they turned their discvery int paint.
The new paint is s light that it culd reduce the amunt f fuel used by planes and cars. Nrmally, it takes abut 500 kilgrams f paint t cver a Being 747 airplane. It'd nly take 1. 3 kilgrams f Dr. Chanda's structural paint t d the same jb. American Airlines nce figured that cutting 30. 4 kilgrams frm its flights culd save 1,514,000 liters f fuel every year. Structural paint culd save ver 16 times as much.
In regular paints, pigments break dwn and becme less bright ver time. That's nt true fr the new paint.“Once we paint smething with structural clr, it shuld stay fr centuries," says Dr. Chanda. Besides, the new paint desn't heat up like regular paint. The new paint can keep surfaces up t 16. 6° Celsius cler than nrmal paint.
The scientists knw hw t make small amunts f the new paint in the lab. Nw they're trying t figure ut hw t make large amunts f the paint cheaply, and hpefully, it will sn cme nt the market.
28. What des the underlined wrd “blending”in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Mixing. B. Buying. C. Creating. D. Discvering.
29. Hw was the new paint discvered?
A. Smartly. B. Carefully. C. Purpsefully. D. Accidentally.
30. Hw des the new paint help t reduce planes' cnsumptin f fuel?
A. By imprving their quality. B. By making them fly faster.
C. By reducing their weight. D. By using mre pigments.
31. What is the authr 's attitude twards the new paint?
A. Disapprving. B. Psitive. C. Uncncerned. D. Dubtful.

Imagine if yur huseplant was thirsty and it culd tell yu s. Chances are, it can- -yu just can't hear it.Accrding t the findings frm researchers in Israel, tmat and tbacc plants stressed frm lack f water r having their stems(莖) cut make sunds cmparable in vlume t nrmal human cnversatin.
The sund is kind f a snap(咔嚓聲) and pp. While the frequency f the plant utcry is t high fr ur ears, they can likely be heard by insects, ther animals and ther plants.
The team started with healthy and stressed tmat and tbacc plants- -the stressed nes were either unwatered fr several days r had their stems cut. They recrded the grup in an acustic chamber(隔音箱) and then in a nisier greenhuse. They als used a machine-learning algrithm(算法) t distinguish between happy plants, thirsty plants, and cut plants.
The team fund that stressed plants make mre sunds than unstressed plants, with a stressed plant making 30 t 50 clicks per hur at seemingly randm intervals. Unstressed plants were much less active.
“Water-stressed plants began making nises, and the frequency f sunds peaked after five days with n water befre decreasing again as the plants dried up cmpletely. The types f sund differed with the cause f stress,”accrding t a press release fr the research. “ The machine-learning algrithm culd accurately distinguish between lack f water and stress frm cutting and culd als tell whether the sunds came frm tmat r tbacc plants.
The researchers explain that it's unclear whether the sunds result frm an effrt t cmmunicate- -yet they nte that the sunds have eclgical and evlutinary meaning.“It's pssible that ther rganisms culd have evlved t hear and respnd t these sunds,”says Hadany.“Fr example, an insect that intends t lay eggs n a plant r an animal that intends t eat a plant culd use the sunds t help guide their decisin.”
32. What did the Israel researchers find?
A. Plants cry ludly when they are cut. B. Certain plants like t help each ther.
C. Plants cmmunicate as humans d. D. Certain stressed plants make sunds.

A. Why a nisier greenhuse was used. B. Hw the researchers did the research.
C. The imprtance f recrding the plants. D. The varieties f plants fr the study.
34. When did water-stressed plants make the mst nises?
A. The mment they were lack f water. B. When the experiment began.
C. After five days f water shrtage. D. After drying up cmpletely.
35. What d the researchers think f the sunds made by the stressed plants?
