In the late 1990s, a family visited the public elementary schl where I taught deaf students. They said they wuld be mving t the district and planned t enrll (報(bào)名) their deaf daughter as a first grader. They were upset that their child’s kindergarten teacher Jane cautined them nt t have high hpes fr her academically. Based upn assessment results, the teacher painted a discuraging picture fr their little girl’s future. Standing behind them was Fina, a beautiful five-year -ld with lng shiny brwn hair and dark flashing eyes. The whle time her parents were there she didn’t make a sund r use sign language, even when her parents encuraged her.
After a few weeks with Fina, I discvered I was dealing with a very bright, very strng-willed child. Althugh I was able t engage her in a variety f learning activities, writing was a cntinual struggle. I tried all kinds f ways t interest her in writing. Every time the pencils came ut, she wuld shut dwn and refuse t participate.
One day Fina gt ff her bus and std in frnt f the schl, weeping. The staff members present did nt knw enugh sign language t ask her why she was crying. Finally they tk her int the ffice where they handed her a pen and ntepad. Fina wrte: “PACBAK”. Immediately the ffice staff realized she left her backpack n the bus. They asked the bus t cme back t schl and sn Fina was reunited with her backpack.
That day Fina discvered the pwer f the pen. Frm then n, she had a new appreciatin fr writing. She is a yung wman nw and has becme an excellent writer, public speaker and student leader. During her senir year in high schl, Fina became the Duglas Cunty Rde Queen and the fllwing year she enrlled at the University f Nrthern Clrad, determined t becme a teacher. In the summer f 2008, I traveled t the Natinal Assciatin f the Deaf Cnference in New Orleans and watched her perfrm cmpetitively as Miss Deaf Clrad. What is the purpse f lightning? The new study published at the end f April in Science fund that lightning may play a bigger rle in glbal climate change than was previusly knwn by the scientific cmmunity.
Many are familiar with the ptentially deadly dangers psed by lightning, which is blamed fr an average f 43 deaths in the United States each year, based n data frm 1989 t 2018. Althugh the dds f being struck are quite lw-1 in 1, 222, 000 in a given year and 1 in 15, 300 in a lifetime many in the weather cmmunity have lng urged peple t take prper precautins t stay safe in strms. Hwever, the researchers recently uncvered a surprising and beneficial impact f lightning.
The study, which included cntributins frm nine atmspheric researchers acrss a dzen universities, was based n an airbrne research flight cnducted by a NASA DC-8 strm-chasing plane in 2012. Researchers initially thught there was a prblem with the equipment n the plane, which was being used t measure the hydrxyl radicals (羥基自由基) in the atmsphere until they realized increases they bserved clsely cnnected with lightning flashes. ABC News reprted.
Hydrxyl radicals, described as a “chemical scavenger ( 清洗劑) “by Science Direct, are imprtant chemical cmpunds fund in the atmsphere due t the reactive nature with ther rganic mlecules ( 分子). Researchers previusly understd that lightning culd help t clean the atmsphere, but there was n evidence that it culd generate cmpunds like these radicals. “N ne has seen that much in the atmsphere frm natural prcesses, ever,” Brune said. As a result, the study estimates that smewhere between 2% and 16% f the xidizing ( 氧 化 ),r cleaning that happens naturally in the Earth’s atmsphere, is dne by lightning.
Why is this significant? The xidatin prcess helps t reduce chemicals like carbn mnxide and methane in the atmsphere. These chemicals, knwn fr being greenhuse gases, have been prven t cntribute t rising temperatures assciated with climate change. Researchers say that mre studies will need t be cnducted t verify the degree t which lightning cntributes t the fight against glbal climate change.
What d the statistics in Para 2 tell us abut lightning?
A. It threatens human lives.B. It can nly harm peple.
C. It is a strange phenmenn.D. It happens quite frequently.
What led t the new discvery in the text?
The equipment failure n the strm-chasing plane.
The lightning flashes bserved by the research team.
The airbrne research cnducted by NASA scientists.
The increase f Hydrxyl radicals during lightning.
Hw des Brune feel abut the finding?
A. Dubtful.B. Frustrated.C. Amazed.D. Ambiguus.
What is the main idea f the text?
Hydrxyl radicals clean the atmsphere.
Oxidizing is a natural result f lightning.
Lightning may help address climate change.
Greenhuse gases cntribute t rising temperature.

Cmputer games have seriusly caught the attentin f Mass Media. The increasing amunt f games with vilent scenes scks the sciety and makes it very aware f them. The fact that vilent games cause vilence in peple is nt even dubted by mst peple. Sme say that the reasn lies in games being t clse t reality. But is it justified nly accrding t the external similarity f these tw wrlds?
Games riginally are entertainment. Cntemprary games are very realistic and fr this reasn they are a surce f great experience fr the player and develp the imaginatin. Games are mre than entertainment. The research f the New Yrk University led by Green and Bavelier claims that the player preferring active games get an imprvement f sme types f brain activity, related t prcessing f visual infrmatin. In particular, game players cpe with prblems f simultaneusly (同時(shí)地) tracking several mving bjects at the average level f 30% better than peple wh d nt play active cmputer vide games. A game is an abstractin. A player gets abstract tasks and acts accrding t abstract rules. Games are als the pssibility t be whever a persn wants t be and t rest frm the utside wrld fr sme time.
But what if a persn gets s much excited with the game scenes that he becmes vilent in reality? Then, it prves that the games cause peple t becme vilent. A psychlgically healthy persn will never cnfuse r cnnect these tw different wrlds. A game is a virtual wrld with visual images very similar t human. These images represent by themselves nthing but simple playing bstacles. A game may ptentially give the pprtunity t “destry the bstacles” that may nt be destryed accrding t the rules, but it is mre abut persnal chice whether t d it r nt. This leads us t the cnclusin that vilence is nt a cnsequence but the cause. Peple wh riginally tend t vilence may get annyed by games and perfrm vilence in the “real wrld”. In this case vilence in games is a simple justificatin f the vilent nature f the player.
Which f the fllwing best explains “sck” underlined in Para. 1?
A. Transfrm. B. Strike.C. Interest.D. Cnfuse.
What can we learn frm the research carried ut by Green and Bavelier?
Games can prmte sme kinds f brain activity.
Games can give peple space t be themselves.
Games can be a surce f great experience.
Games can help players slve prblems.
Which f the fllwing accunts fr vilence in real life?
A. Abstract vilent tasks.B. Vilent visual images.
C. Realistic cmputer games.D. Individuals’ vilent nature. 35.What is the best title fr the text?
Vilence: Nt a Cnsequence f Games
Vilence: Nt a Justificatin f Players
Games: The Vilent Virtual Reality
Games: The Cause f Vilence
